You guessed it, Danny Buderus Medalist - Phoenix Crossland.
Desperation. Heart. Hard work.
Ponga may have the C next to his name, but this guy has “Leader” etched into his DNA. His all-heart performances set the tone and serve as an example for his teammates to pull off their own game saving tackles in the dying stages of the Warriors game.
All great teams need a great captain, a leader, they need a Chief.
“Chief stood up on the bus, and said, we aren’t coming back ******** losers”.
“Chief said to us - Nobody gets sent off in a Grand Final. Follow me”.

The Captain of this team, Kalyn Ponga. One of the best to pull on the Red and Blue of Newcastle. One of the best in the game. Whether he’s barking orders organising his troops, organising the tee times for golf, fist pumping his way to celebrate a teammates try or working his own magic - he unites this group, this town…and they’ll put their bodies on the line, they’ll put their faith in him, to deliver them a premiership.
You need to defy the odds.
Andrew Johns is in doubt after suffering 3 broken ribs and a punctured lung.
Nobody gives them a chance against this Manly team.
The first hurdle came in Round 1 with Sharpe sustaining a PCL strain. And they didn’t stop coming. Brown missed 4 weeks, while Ponga sat out 6 games with a hamstring injury. Best, Saulo, Saifiti, McEwen all spent time on the sidelines before season ending injuries to Brown, Lucas, Mooney and Manuleleua seemingly ended the Knights finals campaign before it had begun.
…But somebody forgot to tell them that.
They dug deep from round 1 and haven’t stopped digging - relying on Hopwood, Crouch, Hunt, Graham and Sandon Smith to guide this team to within a game of their first Grand Final in 25 years.
I’d say there were some miraculous recoveries - but that discredits the hard work, dedication and bravery required from Lucas, Manuleleua and Saulo to get back on deck for this final push towards Glory. Talk about folklore.
You need an inspirational coach.
He taught us to be men.
Malcolm Reilly was addressing the team. Paused a moment. He looked around and said “My biggest regret in life is not playing with you blokes”
Look no further than Coach of the Year*, Justin Holbrook.
He donned the Red and Blue and played with some of the best, some of the legends of this club and the game - and he - he just gets it.
Gets what’s it means to play for Newcastle, for the Hunter. To represent this region.
His coaching ability is clear and in the coming years he may well become a legend himself. This team would do anything for him, and they may well be turning the club’s wooden spoons into a trophy cabinet big enough to hold the trophies they will feel are inevitable if they continue working hard and fulfil the potential that is there.
You need great players, doing great things, in the biggest moments.
Albert, he will play it, 25m away. Down the blind Andrew Johns. Inside for Albert. Albert will score. Albert will score. Newcastle have won the Grand Final.
All year, this group have stepped up. They have risen to the occasion.
They have displayed courage, resilience and skill.
I could list the players that could make a difference on Sunday, or on Grand Final Day - but it’s easier for you to just read the teamlist.
This team has the players, they have the skills - all they need now is their moment.

I reckon it was really tough for the opening stanza but the Dolphins are very reliant on execution and you could see it really rattled them when they made mistakes. They let go of the rope for a few pretty decent periods of the game, particularly after that Toia try. They didn’t deserve to be down 36-10 probably but the Roosters didn’t need to go hard for the full 80 by any means and should be quite fresh next week for a side that has played 3 straight finals.
