NSW-Qld RL, NRL or Australasian RL
The AFL has had long term expansion plans for many years. They make decisions and then stick by them and support them to ensure success.
When the VFL first started to air Saturday matches in NSW the ratings were low. But did they give up.? No, they relocated the Swans from South Melbourne to Sydney. At first the crowds were modest, but the AFL persisted. The Swans now have a strong supporter base in NSW and the junior development and number of kids playing AFL is increasing in NSW.
Similarly the AFL has expanded into traditional areas such as WA and SA and into less traditional areas such as Brisbane and, soon, the Gold Coast.
Meanwhile the NRL dumped the Western Reds and the Adelaide Rams and concentrated its efforts in Qld and NSW.
If Rugby League wants to expand it MUST do so sooner rather than later.
And it must stipulate that free to air contracts ensure live coverage in Melbourne and Adelaide and Perth and Darwin
This would increase the appeal to advertisers.
It could also be the vehicle to drive reform to the competition game scheduling to ensure a fairer competition than the present NRL scheduling provides.

My suggested proposal is to plan for a 2010 expansion of the competition to 20 teams. Forget the howls of there not being enough quality players around. of course there are ~ they just need to be given the opportunity. When players such as Brad Fittler, Gordon Tallis and Andrew Johns retire, others are given the opportunity and new stars emerge. The expansion will just allow more players the opportunity.

Retain the current 16 teams.
Add a second team from NZ, located in Wellington. That would lift the game's profile in NZ and allow one match to be played in NZ each weekend. Far from being a threat to the warrior's survival, a second team would strengthen the standard of player in NZ. NZ Players may return from Superleague or may elect to play for one of their 2 home teams instead of heading abroad. But as always, some Australian imports would be required to balance the teams.
Add (or reinstate) a team from each of the cities of Perth and Adelaide. Then support them so they can grow and be successful and develop supporter bases and junior player competitions.
Finally add a team based in Gosford to make use of that stadium facility and to be supported by or owned by John Singleton and his promotional expertise.

Having set up 20 teams, re-schedule the competition.
19 rounds. Each team plays each other team once. 9 home games/10 away games one year; 10 home games / 9 away games the next year. That is fair.
Suspend the competition for 4 weeks and play the rep games on a Friday night. The fans won't dessert the game! They will appreciate that their club team is being treated fairly and not being disadvantaged by SOO selections.
So play 5 rounds
Then have a free weekend. Play SOO1 on Friday night. Possibly play NSW City vs. NSW Country Origin 1 on the Saturday night or Sunday (at a country venue). Players selected from NRL players not in the origin teams.
Then play a further 3 rounds.
Then have another free weekend and play SOO2 on Friday night. Possibly play a Qld City vs. Qld Country Origin 1 on the Saturday night or Sunday (at a country venue). Players selected from NRL players not in the origin teams.
Then play a further 3 rounds.
Then have another free weekend and play SOO3 on Friday night.
Then play a further 3 rounds.
Then play the Trans Tasman Test on a free weekend.
Then play a further 5 rounds.
Then play the final series ~ consisting of an 8 team series.

That schedule has a few less rounds. It would be easier on the players.
It would be fairer to all teams.
It would embrace an Australasian (Australia & New Zealand) presence.
There would be no byes, but there would be free weekends when non-rep players would get a spell.

With 10 games available each weekend for TV, there could be:
  • A Thursday night game ~ Fox
  • 2 Friday night games ~ 9
  • A Saturday afternoon game at 3.00 pm ~ Fox
  • A Saturday late afternoon game at 5.30 pm
  • 2 Saturday evening games ~ Fox
  • A game telecast from NZ each Sunday (2 NZ Teams) played at 2pm NZ time and shown live at 12.00 noon is Eastern Australia ~ Fox
  • 2 Sunday afternoon games one beginning live at 2pm (Fox) and one beginning live at 4pm (9)

I thought the last contract the NRL signed with Nine was meant to ensure much better national coverage of the game, but this certainly doesn't seem to have happened. Maybe we need to involve another network in the next round of negotiations, because if the sport is on nationally, I am sure it will succeed.

I sort of wonder if the NRL has missed the boat in Wellington. We used to get big 20,000+ crowds for club matches when Canberra and the Bulldogs took games over here, but we only got 16,500 to the test against Australia last year. We have the Phoenix A-League team now which is very popular ... but still, if there was a permanent NRL team I am also sure they would attract a big crowd. I spose the Phoenix also proves that the city will adapt any team which comes to the capital!

Well, all different factors could involve this James.

- We dont see many teams moving games over to NZ now, why? Because the Warriors have built a strong record over there. I remember when teams used to head to Jade and almost be guarenteed to win.

- The weather, believe it or not families just cant put up with the freezing cold

- TV... Is the game live? Save money, turn your TV on and watch the Warriors in warmth.

On the expansion, Sydney teams need to go. I can see the Dragons & Sharks merging.

Parramatta & Penrith merging and Manly re-locating to the Central coast.

It's too full here in NSW. Two more teams should be in QLD.

And IF the NRL becomes that popular, a Perth team & SA team could be a possibillity.

This is true, no NRL side has taken a game to Wellington since 2004. It's shocking the way the city has been abandoned, when they drew well over 20,000 for 3/5 matches played there.

The two matches that drew under that were both played in terrible weather, I might add! Particularly that Canberra match.

That did affect those last two NRL games held at the stadium. It can't be used as an excuse for the text last year though, that was played in brilliant weather, and I got the most sunburnt I have been in my entire life at it. :(

Probably the biggest reason it wasn't a bigger crowd were the ticket prices, which were $50 at the lowest!

I reckon if Wellington joined they would play most their games during the day - as John says, Sunday at 2:00pm local time, 12:00pm Sydney would be the best time. It would also probably be a necessity, because there is a limit to the number of night games at Wellington Stadium, due to the area being classed as residential for some reason, and most of those night slots are already taken by union, cricket and soccer.

They are also making a new club from Papua New Guinea and hope to be in the NRL by 2012 if I recall corectley. But the Sydney clubs defianetly need to merge. And hopefully the Rams and Reds both come back into the compotition.

No way, they wouldn't even have a home ground to play out of, that would come up to NRL standard. It would be brilliant if possible, but it's pie in the sky stuff.

Putting a team back in the Queensland Cup would be a better option for PNG, at the moment.

It's time

Ok, some of this should of happend back at the end of 1999 season!!!
First thing Perth & adelaide has to have a team back NOW, they both shouldn't have been kick out to start off with (gold coast as well, but there back anyway)
Adelaide Rams had an Average of 14,000 in there two seasons and Perth had an Average of 13,000 & junior development in Perth is at a very high standard (Adelaide would need a bit more help now).
Port Moresby should have a team as well because Rugby league has alot of support, they would always get a sell-out at Lloyd Robson Oval, but before that can happend the PNG goverment has to upgrade it from 15,000 to 20,000 before 2012 when media rights come up again!!!!
The Southern Orcas (Wellington) they should also be in the comp as well.
With the Central Coast Souths or the Bulldogs has to move!!!
With the sydney clubs St George Illawarra, Sydney Roosters, Manly, Wests Tigers would stay in the NRL with Brisbane, North Qld, Gold Coast, Auckland Warriors, Newcastle, canberra & Melbourne to make it a new looking 16 team comp.

Did you catch David Gallop last week on the Footy Show?

Answered the facts about expansion, he says we wont see it for a long time.

But could see re-locations.

And what about the parra eels and the penny panthers?

Ok, what I should've said was a team from the west of sydney or a 17 team comp with penrith/parramatta to merge (with Fitzgerald there it will not happend, so kill the eels off is much easy than waiting for him to quit). Or maybe 18 teams with a second team in Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast.
why I left Parra & Penrith out was because they both need the money from league's club, when you have the wests Tigers have two league's clubs and a bigger development area!!!
And Liechhardt & Campbelltown gets more people to games than Penrith FS & Parra stadium

20 teams is too many because:
- there's not enough money, the NRL is struggling to keep players as it is.

- there's unlikely be enough quality players for every game to be up standard. There wouldn't be enough depth once injuries come around.

What I reckon they should do is the same sort of thing they've just done in the Super League and invite all teams to apply for a franchise. All 16 current clubs, plus Perth, Adelaide, Wellington, Central Coast etc. Then choose the best according to finances, facilities, development. Then we'd have a comp which is at least as strong, probably stronger than what we have now.

There needs to be teams in Adelaide, Perth, Christchurch and the Central Coast!

Agree - but Wellington instead of Christchurch. Wellington would have better crowds, support and facilities. There's better quality players as well with the NZ League Academy based there (although with no national comp anymore everyone has left.

Could also put in another Qld team.

I thought Gallop was terrible on the Footy Show. He seems happy to stick with status quo so he doesn't have to make any hard decisions. Dismissed the idea of Perth because of low interest over there; look at some of the crowds in the NRL. Said the salary cap could not be increased because some of the clubs are struggling but then thought the NRL was in good health.

There's a bigger population in Christchurch, but it is 100% union country. Putting a league team there would be akin to relocating all the Sydney teams to Melbourne haha.

you i reckon theres a strong chance of relocation

Not with Gallop at the helm. I'm sure if a team came up to him and said "we want to relocate" that he'd approve it, but he's certainly not going to go out of his way to promote it.

Same as he isn't going out of his way to do anything half decent for the game. Worst rugby league CEO ever. Bring back Arko and Quale.

one more new zealand team is needed in my opinion. they could play against the warriors for some sort of shield. they would get big crowds and a great rivalry.
