English Recruits Watch

I would argue NSW Cup is a level beyond SL.
The quality of players is pretty similar, but half the players in NSW cup are going through the motions and trying to avoid injury and the other half are young guys trying to make a name for themselves, while the ESL guys are having a crack.

The Super League is definitely better than NSW Cup lol. NSW Cup is a practice league where the roster is almost never the same two weeks in a row. The best Super League sides would be mid table in the NRL most likely, whereas the best NSW Cup team in any given season would absolutely win the spoon in the NRL. Except maybe in 2016…

Have we actually confirmed any of these ESL recruits?

Cause if we haven't I wouldn't be confident if their any good that someone else won't swoop in.

Not officially confirmed but we have signed them for 2024 and are trying to get them a year early. So the club is probably just waiting until they know what year they’re going to arrive here before announcing a contract.

Very true

James Hooper isn’t the best source but if this is true surely we can stump up the cash to at least tempt the Huddersfield and Wigan to let Pryce and KPP come early.

I’m very, very sure Hooper is wrong on two counts there. The first is I’m almost certain the transfer fee does go on the cap, the second is that the transfer fee would have gone to Wigan, because that’s the club Bateman was playing for when Canberra signed him.

This is actually bad news to me. It'd be better if it was in the cap as thats the NRL's money. Gardiner doesnt strike me as one to pay out of Wests pocket when he doesnt have to

I’m sure they’d much prefer to keep him but generally money talks with the English clubs, especially a smaller one like Huddersfield. Most are flat out just staying afloat.

Closest we've got to an actual confirmation so far

“They are both coming in 2024,” said Parr, who joined Newcastle after two decades at the Cowboys.

“Our recruitment chief Clint Zammit has an enormous wrap on Pearce-Paul and Pryce.

“One (Pryce) is a playmaker and the other one (Pearce-Paul) is a gun in the back row so we’re looking forward to their arrival.

“From what Clint tells me, they are committed to coming here in 2024 and that will be exciting for our roster.

I don’t really get the whole signing players a year and a half in advance type thing. I’m sure they both have massive wraps on them but a lot can happen between now and then. If we’re that desperate for them just pay the transfer fee. There isn’t a lot of flash players on the market anyway so I don’t see it making a great deal of difference on the cap.

Will Pryce is only 19 and will be 20 turning 21 when he joins us for pre-season in 2023-24.
So he’s super young still.

KPP is 2 years older than Pryce; so It’s probably the perfect time to get him next season but it won’t hurt to wait another year.
He turns 22 next year so he’ll be 23 in 2024.

So if players suddenly become available in these two players positions now/soon and are proven performers then do we not attempt to sign them or do we sign them and tell these two, sorry positions filled.
Are we looking at a 12 month wait and hoping they are as good as we are led to belief, I am betwickst and between

I guess it depends if we have a first grade spot ready and waiting for them next year ... if so pay the transfer fee, if not it's probably more beneficial they have another season in Superleague.

They are younger players and by no means the answer to our problems.

You need to find talent early these days, Young almost signed with the storm before us!

They’re trying to get them over for next year, the other club still has to agree to let them go whether or not there’s a transfer fee & it’s not just a set amount which automatically enables a release.
