Greg Inglis calls on Sam Burgess to improve discipline after 'nasty' Sam Thaiday hit



THEY might be teammates at the Rabbitohs but right now Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess are World Cup rivals - and the Kangaroos superstar says the English enforcer needs to work on improving his discipline in the wake of his "nasty" hit on Sam Thaiday.

While Burgess will use his one game suspension to "rest" after he left Thaiday lying flat on his back suffering concussion, Inglis told reporters at Australia's training run ahead of their match against Fiji that his NRL teammate needs to learn.

"Sammy Burgess is a person that goes out and gives it his all," Inglis said."From the look of it, it was a pretty nasty hit.

"A swinging arm is a swinging arm and there is no doubt about that.

"He is just a person who wants to do everything right by the team."But it is unfortunate that the last few weeks, it has come into his game a little bit.

"I'm pretty sure he will look back on it and put it out.

"You can put it down to emotions, you can put it down to a lot of things."I've played with Sammy for the last three years and he is a player that you want to play with.

"But, in the end, he is representing his country and I'm representing mine."

Burgess has been branded a thug after copping his fourth ban of 2013 for foul play.

He was rubbed out for a high shot on Mitchell Pearce, a crusher tackle on Andrew Fifita and a "squirrel grip" on Will Chambers prior to this latest incident.

Thaiday has not been named to play against Fiji.Burgess said while it would be disappointing to miss the game against Ireland which is a sellout, at least it gives him a break ahead of the tournament finals

"I'll be sat in the stands watching and that is obviously disappointing," Burgess said.

"I would be rather be out there playing but I will try to look at it positively and give my body a rest and get ready for Fiji the week after, leading into the finals."

England's Graham back for Ireland clash

Former St Helens prop James Graham has been recalled to the England team for Saturday's Rugby league World Cup group A match against Ireland at Huddersfield.

The 28-year-old Canterbury Bulldogs forward was left out of the opening game against Australia in Cardiff last Saturday but is set to win his 19th cap after being among three changes to the side that lost 28-20 to the Kangaroos.

Graham, who is thought to have served an internal suspension for breaching the team's alcohol ban, takes the place of Wigan prop Lee Mossop while Wigan loose forward Sean O'Loughlin returns from injury in place of the suspended Sam Burgess and Leeds-bound winger Tom Briscoe takes over from Wigan's Josh Charnley, who has a slight shoulder injury.

Huddersfield second rower Brett Ferres and South Sydney props Tom and George Burgess keep their places after making their debuts at the Millennium Stadium while Mossop pays the price for being unable to make an impact from the bench.

"We have made a slight adjustment to the squad this week," said coach Steve McNamara.

"We have one forced with the suspension of Sam Burgess. It gives us a chance to look at a couple of other members of the squad this week.

"It suits us to have a consistent selection from last week with a couple of tweaks.

"We have 24 very good players and the additions to the squad this week, Tom Briscoe, James Graham and Sean O'Loughlin, will give us some impetus and freshness in the team."

The return of O'Loughlin is a timely boost as England seek their first win of the tournament.

He had injury-disrupted end to the season with Wigan but still managed to play key roles in their victories in the Challenge Cup final and Super League Grand Final.

"He is valued by the group and we understand the qualities he brings to the squad," McNamara said.

"Having him available gives us a new dimension to the forward pack with great depth across all positions."

Briscoe will win his 14th cap, but Charnley, who scored his 44th try of the year against Australia, is still regarded as a first-choice winger for his country.

Minnows Ireland will draw on their own ‘Book of Feuds’ to lift for this battle with tournament heavyweights England – but it could be all one-way traffic in West Yorkshire if these teams’ World Cup opening clashes are any gauge.

England surged out of the blocks against the Kangaroos in Cardiff last Saturday, compiling a tidy 10-nil lead after 20 minutes and keeping the tourists off the scoreboard for near enough half an hour.

But then the green and gold clicked into gear to score three snappy tries and take a surprise 18-10 halftime lead, with the
teams matching point for point in the second stanza, leaving Australia ahead 28-20 at fulltime.

England coach Steve McNamara may have lamented a few lapses in concentration but he would have been impressed by his team’s skill and aggression – with the exception of Sam Burgess’s high shot that sees the Rabbitohs star suspended for this match.

Among the players to catch the eye was prop Chris Hill, who managed to grind out 110 metres in just 41 minutes on the park, along with a game-high three offloads and 22 tackles.

His gain was superior to acknowledged star George Burgess, whose 106 metres from 15 hit-ups, plus a try, were loudly applauded.

Meanwhile the Irish are licking their wounds after being walloped 32-14 by Fiji last Tuesday, in a game where Akuila Uate’s three tries for the Bati exposed their vulnerability to speed and power out wide.

Fiji led 10-4 at halftime and ran away with proceedings in the second half, racking up a quartet of tries between the 52nd and 73rd minutes before they put their cues in the rack and allowed their opposition to save face with two late tries in the final three minutes.

Watch Out England

Manly forward James Hasson showed a willingness to roll up his sleeves and do the hard work with a spirited game for Ireland against Fiji. The fringe first-grader was a handful carting the ball up, making six tackle busts from his 13 runs off the bench. England would be advised to keep a lid on him.

While this game represents a massive opportunity for England fullback Sam Tomkins to further display why he’s rated one of the most exciting players in the game, the No.1 is sure to be targeted by Irish bombs after Greg Inglis stole a relatively simple take to set up a try for Australia last week.

Tomkins’ positional play in defence will also be targeted – Billy Slater scored a runaway try on the stroke of halftime last week after Tomkins inexplicably joined the England defensive line for an Australian scrum feed near halfway. With no-one at home it proved a fatal error.

Watch Out Ireland

Go-forward will prove tough for Ireland, as it did when they locked horns with Fiji – they were pretty much stopped in their tracks all game, managing a meagre 742 metres from all runs throughout the 80 minutes.

That was almost 400 metres less than Fiji made from roughly the same number of runs. With the England defence a much tougher machine, the portents are not good.

Key Match-Up

James Graham v Brett White. You can bet Graham will be out to make up for lost time after his omission last week, reportedly for disciplinary reasons. Graham has been the mainstay of the England and Great Britain packs since 2006 and has proven himself one of the toughest bookends in the NRL.

Former NSW Blues and Kangaroos rep White was an extraordinary contributor for Ireland against Fiji, making a game-high 19 hit-ups for 119 metres with a colossal 36 tackles.

Where It Will Be Won

Class. England have a thick coating of it across the park, while Ireland have it in Spakfilla dollops in Pat Richards on the wing and Brett White in the pack.

England ticking time poms as Sam Burgess and James Graham face-off



SET your clocks for when South Sydney meet Canterbury next season.

That's when Sam Burgess and James Graham can forget the pretence of being teammates and go at each other like they really want to go at each other while playing for England in the current World Cup.

As opponents.

While currently masquerading as teammates, the pair are very much off with each other after the now infamous night out that saw Gareth Hock sent home in disgrace (for drink-driving half the team home) and several others disciplined behind closed doors.

The Poms are in turmoil at the moment.

Mostly because Graham and Burgess came together in what in rugby league circles is variously described as a fracas, a set-to, a brouhaha or any other synonym care to be named, depending on what radio station you listen to.

No word on who got the victory, but the smart money is if they were allowed to keep fighting until one man got the victory then they would still be going.

Burgess has the athletic advantage but nobody has a better cold, dead stare, which hides all that silent intent, than Graham. In either case, there are few tougher players in the game.

Graham makes his World Cup debut tonight when the Poms take on Ireland which, by a strange coincidence, will feature no Burgess given his one match ban.

Irish say RLWC pressure is on England

Ireland coach Mark Aston believes England are a team under pressure and he's hoping to turn up the heat in Saturday's Rugby League World Cup group match at Huddersfield.

Both teams go into the game - their first meeting since the quarter-finals in 2000, when the Irish squandered a 10-4 lead to go down 26-16 - on the back of an opening defeat and Aston is warning that Fiji will be no pushovers for England in their final group match.

Aston, whose side lost 32-14 to the Fijians in a bruising clash in Rochdale on Monday, seized on England's humiliating pre-tournament defeat by Italy and the attempted cover-up of a subsequent major disciplinary breach in their camp to claim all the pressure is on Steve McNamara's men.

England have since opened their tournament campaign with a 28-20 defeat to Australia and Aston said: "They need to win and, if they were to lose three games on the bounce, they're under the pump because that Avidin team are pretty handy.

"There is no expectation on us, except from ourselves. We want to be a lot better than we were last week. We are expecting to raise the bar and we are expecting to come away with the result."

Aston, who has masterminded back-to-back Championship Grand Finals for equally unfancied Sheffield Eagles, says his side can draw encouragement from the deeds of Scotland, Italy and the United States in a World Cup so far full of surprises.

"We got a lot of belief out of the Fiji game," he said. "We looked at the review with a lot of confidence. We weren't far off.

"We've looked at England and we know there are areas in there where, if we are clinical and we play to the structure we've talked about, we can break them down.

"Look what Scotland, Italy and the United States have done and England slipped up against Italy."

The introduction of Brett White, who played for Australia in the 2009 Four Nations Series, Rory Kostjasyn, Api Pewhairangi and James Hasson from the NRL has made the Irish dark horses and they have a potential match-winner in 2009 Super League Man of Steel Pat Richards.

The goal-kicking winger, who is one of seven survivors from Ireland's memorable 2008 World Cup campaign, will, barring a major upset, be making his final appearance on English soil as he prepares to return to Australia after next week's clash with the Kangaroos in Limerick.

"I think this will probably be my last game in England and I'm looking forward to the opportunity of playing in front of a full house against England on home turf," Richards said.

"We know it doesn't get any easier after Fiji but we'll be better for the run and hopefully put a good performance in."

Sinfield not feeling the pressure

Kevin Sinfield insists the England team will not be burdened by the weight of expectation when they take on Ireland in their second group match of the Rugby League World Cup in front of a capacity 25,000 crowd at Huddersfield on Saturday.

England managed to put the humiliation of their pre-tournament defeat by Italy behind them in pushing favourites Australia all the way in Cardiff last Saturday, but that opening 28-20 defeat has increased the pressure on them to open their account ahead of their final pool game against the dangerous Fijians.

Sinfield's men are once more cast in the role of favourites and the skipper is confident they can deliver this time.

"The group is fully concentrated on what's going on between our four walls," said Sinfield, who has spoken frequently about a siege mentality in the England camp.

"Our expectation is greater than anything that anybody externally can put on us. We just want to get out there tomorrow and perform and hopefully get the competition moving for us."

Saturday's game is the first meeting between the teams since England came from 10-4 down to beat Ireland 26-16 in the quarter-finals of the 2000 World Cup at Headingley, and Sinfield is expecting a similar test from Mark Aston's men.

"Ireland are going to turn up tomorrow and throw everything at us," he said. "We're aware of that. We're preparing for the best of Ireland but hopefully they're preparing for the best of us because it's important we go out and play like we can.

"That game back in 2000 was very physical and, if I remember rightly, the pitch was pretty waterlogged which meant it was a real forward battle.

"The pitch out there is in great condition and hopefully we get a decent track tomorrow and both teams can throw the ball about and play some good stuff."

England coach Steve McNamara, who has recalled Graham and has Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin back to help offset the loss of Sam Burgess to suspension, is expecting Ireland to improve from their opening 32-14 defeat by Fiji.

"We expected Ireland to be very good," he said. "They have got some real experienced NRL players and players who are regulars in Super League.

"They know a lot about us and fortunately we know a lot about them."

This is going to be a fascinating game. I think England need to make a bit of a statement and put a big score on.
 
I'm surprised Tom Burgess has made the English side. Bit of a gamble on a fringe NRL player who hasn't shown a lot. I thought he looked ordinary against Australia, too.
 
I reckon it will be a close game but England need to win this one IMO the result I reckon England will win by 10
 
Don't think It'll be that close. I reckon the match will start slow, but by the end England put a few more tries on.
 
England pulled off some really good attack. Be nice to see some of that against Australia.
 
England's first half was brilliant!

How good to see it played in front of a sold out 25,000 seat stadium too ... never thought I'd see the day England vs Ireland pulled such an audience.
