Most wingers who had the chance to play beside Mat Gidley averaged close to a try a game - Albert, Tahu even that Beckett guy who was a genuine reserve grader when not being spoon fed tries by Gidley.
I often wonder how many tries Uate would have scored if we'd have kept Matt Gidley for a few more years instead of him having 3 great years for St Helens in the same years Uate was scoring for fun for us.
Robbie Beckett... Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time!

For me, Uate and McManus were the best combo we’ve had until now … Uate the attacking powerhouse, McManus an absolute defensive machine … could probably count on one hand the amount of times he made the wrong call on coming in and wrapping up the man, or staying out.

Both great for yardage, although Uate had times under Bennett where he went more sideways on kick returns than forwards.

But I think this current pair have overtaken them. I really hope Dom re-signs and they stay together for years to come … they just have a game-breaking ability, on the weekend I really thought they did turn the match. As great as the other pairs are, I don’t think they could influence a result to the same level that these two can.

Love watching them play, anyway! Appreciate you D+G!!! ❤️

Except it was his little brother Lenny that played for us. Robbie was a pretty handy winger for Penrith.
I did always like what Lenny brought to the team, I have to say. He went on to play Super Rugby and won a competition with the Brumbies, I think.

So best centre - wing partnerships

Mat Gidley - Timana Tahu
Mat Gidley - Darren Albert
Bradman Best - Greg Marzhew
Dane Gagai - Dom Young
Adam McDougall - Aku Uate

Mad Dog and Akuila is the ATG for me, great days. 🥹

I remember everyone on here always going on about how MacDougall needed to retire, too. Don‘t remember who his replacement ended up being, Keith Lulia?

You could add 2006 Brian Carney to that list also, a bundle of tries and winger of the year that season I believe from memory playing outside Gidley in what was his last season for the Knights.

I did a calculation on try scoring rates based only on their games played for us. Dom scores a try every 1.18 games for us on average. Coincidentally, Tahu had the exact same rate in his first stint with us at 1.18 games per try. Albert averaged a try every 1.37 games, while Uate scored one every 1.46 games. Marz is currently averaging a try every 1.47 games and Beckett averaged a try every 2.08 games.
