Dane Gagai

I think like a lot of outside backs, Dane plays better in a better side. Souths fans love him pretty unanimously, he’s been great there. Were there a lot of complaints about his play in the year we made the prelim, or did that start to really kick off in the bad years following that?

People talk about the Morris twins like they’re having this huge comeback in form but they were always great at their other clubs, it just gets a lot easier to look good all the time when you play for Easts.

Now that our team is better, we’ll see a better version of Dane if he comes back. Very happy to eat humble pie if I’m wrong on this.

The Souths fans who taunted me when he signed there couldn't understand my glee at getting rid of.him. They soon could and wanted him gone. In the last season or so, the move to the left has worked well for him, kudos to Wayne for doing it because his left hand palm and right foot step would seem to be perfect for a right sided player. But he has been more consistent. If he came back here on a much reduced salary and wasn't demanding to play a position he wasn't up to, maybe I could be more forgiving. But few Knights players have left me more traumatised.

If you want an example of what I'm talking about, it is the game against saints where we put 30 on them in the first half. Id joked all week that McGregors game plan was run out Gagai, because no team exposed him quite like the saints. It worked early with saints strolling past him for a couple to lead by 12, then we had all the ball and raced in 30 unanswered by half time. Ross was at fullback and having a stormer, saints couldn't get the ball. Then, with and even share of the ball in the second, they picked Gagai apart and came back to win. What Dugan did to him honestly made me laugh it was that telegraphed and easy. What, does he think hes doing us a favour offering us back his "services"? The opposition club should hace paid him week to week.

As I see it, Gagai has very few injuries because he doesn't put his body on the line - especially for us.
The reason he is so much better at SOO level is because he puts his body on the line.
He has the talent to be worth anything we could pay him, but he won't risk injury unless there is something big on the line.
He plays firstgrade like most firstgraders play reserve grade - going hard on the easy stuff, but avoiding injury at all costs.

He's been putting in for Souths over the last 6-9 months big time. The cynic in me says that's because he knows 2021 is a contract year.

Fantasy points not the be-all and end-all etc etc, but this paints a picture.

2016 - average 33
2017 - average 42 (contract year)
2018 - average 36
2019 - average 33
2020 - average 40
2021 - average 49 (contract year)

In 2017 he signed with Souths at the mid point of the season though... wasn’t playing for a contract for half the year.

Post of the week IMO.

Honestly its a shame footballers can't have mandatory one year contracts the amount of players that Josh Perry is ludicrous!

Only really made one bad error on those tries, not sure prime Brett Morris could have done much about the entire edge inside him ****ing up constantly as Souths has tonight...

Bit of a disaster for Gagai that one, in a contract year. Might have wiped a hundred grand off haha. Not keen on him coming here, I must say (had almost forgotten his non-efforts for us).

Do not be fooled by his recent form playing for a new deal, he was phoning it in for Souths as well.

He's on 700k, if he wants to come for 400k and the love of the club, maybe.
If we have the cash spare maybe a 1 year contract? If he will take it.

Apparently still in talks with him... not sure where the money comes from

Green retires...

We have offered Mann, Watson new deals...

Clifford is here early and for some reason Lodge...

can't leave much spare cash around even with Pearce's pay cut.
