Dane Gagai

It feels like a miracle after the way his ankle contorted … and our luck with injuries!

Just watched a few games from 2013. Geez gags was on fire on that right side. Aku wouldn't have half his tries if it wasn't for him. The way he created and passed was nothing like I've seen from him before. I really just hope he can bring some of that attack and hone the talk and defence on that side.

Thought it was crazy the criticism he used to get on here … could hardly expect him to carve up with the side we had from 2015 onwards … yet he often seemed to get picked out as our biggest issue

Yeah exactly. You can’t carry a team from centre, yet I guess because of his salary and rep experience he was expected to.

He played well with us when he first arrived, then he had a couple of years where a huge proportion of the Knights fan base was mad at him - the spoon years - and now at Souths he’s had some of the best years of his career. Might be a pattern there, I don’t know…

The issue I had with Gags was he had the highest tackle break figure in the team, but most of that was running sideways crabbing across field.

He is a better player now. I hope he works out nicely for us.

Gagai wasn't unfairly criticised on here.
We always paid him rep player money and he always delivered good firstgrader type performances.
He showed in SOO games that he was very capable of playing at the very elite level, but he was never able to motivate himself to do that at club level.
He left here because we were no longer prepared to pay him elite level money to give us 80% every week.
He is coming back because no one else will give him elite money now.
Ironically, he found motivation to produce his best ever club form for Souths after they decided he wasn't worth what they were paying him.
I am happy that he is coming back to us for the type of money he has always shown he is worth - decent firstgrade money.
I don't expect him to be in our top players every week. He is capable of it, but has never been motivated to lift every week.
If we make the finals in 2022 and he delivers what he has for Souths in recent times, he'll be a bargain signing for us.

In a season where a number of players have struggled or gone backwards I’ve gotta give props to Gagai.

He’s been close to our best most weeks and played half a game on Sunday with a broken cheek.
The fact that he was trying harder than just about all of other blokes speaks volumes.

Interesting reading some comments with the benefit of hindsight.
If we sign Milf for 3 years it will go exactly the same way, we'll be having buyers remorse after 6 months.
