Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

anyways i agree with Kurts comments . he says Dane Gagai should be the clubs priority signing for next year .it tells me his been groomed to be fullback next year and future five/eight for us .i don't think we should worried to much about Mata Utia brothers . sione made pretty clear he wants to stay at Newcastle :) .

In hindsight maybe pouring a stack of money into outside backs isn't so bad.

If you have a fantastic spine you can away with plodders out wide because they get made to look like stars. If I'm being realistic Tyrone is as good as we're going to get until someone from NYC steps up, so we need centres and wingers who can score a try from nothing. Like Gagai's second on the weekend for example.

I still don't think anyone who isn't in the best 17 should be getting any more than 150k though. So re-sign Gagai to play FB, Sione to play centre, keep BJ/Aku/Jimmy Mac and the rest can suit themselves. Unless the club likes Chanel better than Jimmy Mac, in which case he should be shopped around. Re-sign Snowden and Korbin as our starters, Tariq or Rochow can take over from J Smith. Any left over money goes into another prop.

2016
Gagai
Jimmy Mac
BJ
Sione
Aku
Mullen
Roberts
Snowden
Clydesdale
Korbin
Scott
Rochow
Tariq

Randall
New Prop/Tapine
Stockwell
Houston

Done.

I figure our backline is our strength so I don't mind splashing a bit of money there. We're not a club that has the luxury of having a bunch of 600k forwards on our books that we need a heap of money for. As long as the forward we have can hold their own we have the backs to get the job done.

Anyone else think Titans might be an option for gagai, they seem to have some money, cousin Hoffman their, mates with dce, he's into his surfing and closer to family, obviously brisbane are favourites but gc may be dark horse

The going-ons north of the border, Dane may well be suited by staying right where he is. Poor Benny seems to have inheritted a mess. PK thinks the Titans are looking to Thaiday and Hannant as their next recruits.

I'm about 97% sure Gagai will be in Brisbane next year. Saying that though I think it'll probably be a stupid move for his career.

Bennett didn't inherit a mess, he inherited an about average NRL roster performing arguably above their capacity. He then added some very big name players, changed the style of their game and has seemingly lost control of their hearts all within one pre season and one match - it's no coincidence that the Broncos looked exactly as we used to, flat, predictive and dead by the 60th minute

BBennett's career is finished and he'll be lucky to get another year after this one

Is there a time that Dane has to make a decision by?

I would like to think that if the Knights have a good season, which I feel they will, then he will seriously consider staying. He has a good life here now, and I hope he remembers that the Broncos booted him not so long ago.

Also he is young with no responsibilities and he has the freedom to live his own life. Sure when he has a young family he may want to be near family, but its at this stage of his life he should be doing what's best for his career....and I do not believe that's with Wayne and the Broncos.

My feeling is that he will stay.

According to Big League it'll be a 3-way race between us, Brisbane and the Tits.

Gagai has been saying some mixed things. He's talked about how much he loves Newcastle, the pride in the jersey, he's extremely close to McKinnon but then he's mentioned how much he looks up to Bennett and goes on about how players want to follow him. So it's difficult to know what's going to happen but you'd think he's most likely going.

Luckily for us we have a centre 6 years younger, current Australian rep to take his place. Keep grooming Mamo as a fullback and we continue to have one of the best, most exciting backlines in the NRL while Gagai goes on to play boring old footy under Wayne.

Dane Gagai is set to quit the Newcastle Knights to return to the Brisbane Broncos

WAYNE Bennett is set to lure Dane Gagai to Brisbane with the classy centre considering emulating Darius Boyd by quitting Newcastle to return to the Broncos.

In a crushing blow to the Knights’ hopes of retaining Gagai, the Maroons Origin hopeful has privately expressed a desire to resurrect his Broncos career under Bennett.

Newcastle hierarchy are refusing to give up hope, with the club’s director of football, Michael Hagan, having tabled a deal to keep Gagai out of the Broncos’ clutches.

But The Courier-Mail understands Gagai will be a Bronco next season as Bennett ramps-up his backline succession plan for veteran centre Justin Hodges.

Bennett declined to comment yesterday, but the seven-time premiership-winning coach succeeded in securing Boyd and Broncos powerbrokers are confident he will also land Gagai.

Two years ago, Gagai was jettisoned from Brisbane by former coach Anthony Griffin for minor disciplinary issues.

But Bennett threw the 24-year-old a lifeline at Newcastle and remains unaltered in his belief Gagai should never have been axed by the Broncos.

So serious is their interest, the Broncos are currently assessing their salary-cap position and the form of off-contract players to find ways to accommodate Gagai.

Well-placed sources say Gagai has verbally assured Bennett he will be at Red Hill next season, but Hagan yesterday stressed the Knights will fight for his signature.

“We aren’t giving up the fight,” Hagan said.

“We’re not naive in regards to the Broncos, we’ll do our best and provide the best opportunities.

It will be for Dane to weigh up, but we’ve tabled an offer and we’ll see what he decides.

“I had the same opportunities as Dane to go to Queensland and I’m here 25 years later.

Once you get yourself settled in Newcastle, there’s a lot of positive reasons why you want to raise your family and get settled here.”

One ace up Brisbane’s sleeve is the presence of Gagai’s younger brother Jacob, who joined the Broncos over summer after leaving Newcastle due to homesickness.

Bennett’s links with the family span almost 30 years, with Gagai’s father Ray having been mentored by the super coach during the Broncos’ formative years in the late 1980s.

Before last month’s NRL All Stars clash, Gagai spoke of Bennett’s almost fatherly influence as he picked up the pieces following his Broncos axing.

“He is the sort of coach that players do follow him and it is no secret my dad played under him,” he said.

“Wayne has always looked out for me and I know any advice he gives me will be with my best interests at heart.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Newcastle but this next deal is a really important one for me, so I want to make sure I am in the right place to get the best out of the short time I have in the game.”

Everyone thinking mamo will be our saviour if gagai leaves I can't agree with? Apart from pure speed I don't get the hype around him, from what I did see in nsw cup on weekend he got man handled being so small

If Gagai leaves Sione will be center surely. Mamo may come in next year if Gids leaves

looks like Dane let something slipout...seems like he has made up his mind already....

I noticed that. We all assumed this was the case and he was off anyway but he's been pretty tight lipped previously. Sounds like he thinks he's going to be most successful at Brisbane from those comments. If that's the case then good luck to him. I have no hostilities towards Gagai for leaving. He's been good to the club and has always treated it and the fans with respect unlike Boyd.

This thing (and with stuff with DCE/Foran) highlights how bad the current negotiation processes are though. Fans have to watch players play for their team all year knowing they've chosen to go elsewhere. It just makes everything awkward for the fans for the remainder of the season.
