Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

Yeah Gagai seems to be happy to wait until after the Origin period to discuss his contract while we only had a certain amount of time to re-sign the Mata'utias. If we didn't re-sign them now as Insomniac said, there'd be a good chance of us losing the brothers AND Gagai. Obviously he's a priority, I think it's more about him doing what he wants to do.

Yep, and after the Origin period the Mata'utias would be locked into their contracts with the Dogs so we'd probably end up losing all of them. The club is apparently offering Gagai 575k which to me is overs as it is so it doesn't seem like re-signing the Mata'utias has affected our offer to Gagai in any way. If he leaves the club can certainly say they did everything in their power to keep him and we have the Mata'utias to cover him. The club did the right thing.

Although I'm not 100% sold on Mamo yet I do hope we're prioritising re-signing him over Gidley. I think Gids is the best fullback we have currently but if we could only get one more year out of him I think it's probably good business wrap up the young guys first and leave him until the end and only go into discussions if Gagai and Mamo both leave. I think Gids would understand that too.

575k is a fair offer if he's playing fullback next year.

Mamo is miles away from first grade fullback IMO. If gagai leaves Kurt should get another 12 months. Even just for halves depth cause the NSW cup guys are terrible.

I'm not convinced Gagai is the right option at fullback either. He gets driven back too easily and is much more dangerous on the edge. I know he may have played there as a junior but first grade defensive lines are so strong these days I doubt he'd be anywhere near as potent there as he is on the edge as a centre. You need strength at fullback in first grade which he doesn't have. The amount of times I've seen him get picked up and carried backwards I'd worry about him on kick returns. I have the same concern with Mamo there.

Gidley will get some good offers from England so he's not going to stick around here on a tiny contract as depth. It wouldn't be fair to ask him to either. If he's to stay it'll be to play first choice fullback on a similar contract.

Was interesting to hear Paul Kent tonight saying Gagai didn't appreciate the approach from DCE. Don't know what we should read in to that.

Paul Kents like every reporter and merely connects dots or speculates until you hear a quote from said player they are lying or making up rubbish.

- I still suspect Scott possibly leaving is BS.

Well one of the players has obviously told the club about the calls because Gidley knew all about it. It's not like DCE is going to call Midley and ask him for their phone numbers.

I don't think so in this case. Way it was said, the report came to the Telegraph from Gagai himself. PK would have got it straight from the source.

Where did Kent say that @Defender1? Just curious

I'm not Defender1 haha but it was on NRL 360. They had Benji Marshall and Ennis on and they brought up DCE contacting players. Benji said he found it strange and said he'd never heard of anything like that happening before when a player wasn't at that club yet. Then Kent agreed with him and said something along the lines of Gagai not being happy it'd happened.

At least the club knows this stuff is happening though. I don't want to ever see another situation like that Mata'utias where they were able to sign elsewhere without our CEO even knowing.

Unfortunately I think the club would have hosed down the rumours by now if they weren't true.

I think the only thing it (and Benji's comments) highlights is that players might not have liked the way DCE went about his contract negotiations and don't want to follow suit.

To Gagai's credit, regardless of where he goes he's gone to a real effort to keep his negotiations private and not parade them around like DCE did.

Thanks @Insomniac

Doesn't sound like there's much to it so Titans may still be as big of a threat

Na, there wasn't much in it. It was more about the morality of what DCE was doing. I just thought Gagai's response was interesting. Could have just been a go through my manager kind of thing (If anything)...

I reckon that's a pretty fair assessment.

If Gagai could guarantee that his form remain consistently strong, I'd be comfortable in paying him 650k per season

That aside, if we're offering him nearly 600 surely the Broncos can't match that? Jack Reed and Hodges are both on huge bucks (Reed resigned in his form bump). They're surely short of change. They had to release Barba and Kennedy just to accommodate Boyd. This says to me they're out of money

I'm thinking we're half a chance of keeping Gags, a lot of the disconcerting dialog coming from Gags in the media could well be a manager directive to drive up market speculation and his price

If Thaiday leaves it would free up a heap of space. On Thaiday, if he is forced out of Brisbane he could be a great pick up. He would have a massive point to prove to Bennett and a change of club would freshen him right up.

Worth a thought anyway :)

Broncos would offer half of what we would maybe 2/3 and say that he stayed for less to play under wayne like the dragons players did, then get several third party deals so it's pretty much upto him.

thaiday has sucked for years and has been performing some form of mind trick because no one has acknowledged it until now.

Thaiday has only ever lifted for big games, where he is very good.
Week on week he isn't much good, but he'd be handy to have in a finals series.
