Dane Gagai discussion

We might need to find a firstgrade spot for Connor Votano to keep him past his current contract. He plays centre and wing as well as fullback.
Connor is a classy player absolutely, he absolutely isn’t a power player though. So for him to have any impact (like many others) he needs go forward and ball control.
I want to keep him and his brother badly. He’ll be a player that’ll maybe not explode onto the scene but will gradually just keep getting better and better.

Latu and DeCourcey both been very strong this season, mostly on the wing. Body type wise they are two lads who could explode with another preseason. Physically very strong lads.

Sort of feel the same way about gagai and frizz. Would be happy to keep both, but probably on about 1/2 of their current deals which were probably back ended.

I haven’t a clue what players are on and not sure anyone on here actually knows but I would like to keep both Gagai and Frizell for another season, the experience they have is essential for next season based on what we haven’t got.
Gagai would have to worth as much if not a bit more than Schiller
Frizell would have to be worth as much if not more than either Croker or Jones
If both of them only last half a season playing top grade at least that’s half a season longer our young guys get to be ready

Worth is an incredibly bipolar thing

Both Gags and Frizell have had great careers but no they are not worth more both are at the very brink of their careers, as you age your value dwindles, in all sports this is the way it goes, very few keep it and those are the absolute legends of the game. (This is in regards to money value)

Don’t get me wrong I love both Gags and Frizell and I really hope we keep Friz and give Gags a staff spot, but if we can get them for less we do and we shouldn’t go higher that’s just stupid and keeping them at the same price is alright but not ideal, you’d want to get them for less and I don’t doubt POS wants to keep both but is trying to get them for less to hep recruitment.

That’s a shame, Gags has always been one of my favourite players ever.

I understand the club can’t affford to pay that much though for someone who’ll be 35.

As @Billy said, they need to make sure there’s room for Voatano and DeCourcey. Can’t have their path blocked by someone who’s a year to year proposition. Shame he’s not in a position of greater need.

The worst part of all this, is the club’s back to almost the exact same position it was when Gags left the first time, collecting another wooden spoon and trying to rebuild.

Would’ve been nice for this dumb club to get their **** sorted and actually be competing for something when he retires but that’s too much to ask apparently.

I know he’s keen to play on as long as possible. I’m sure he could still get decent money playing on in the Super League. Maybe he can win a title over there.

In an ideal scenario for the club, Gags would re-sign on a lower contract (seems to be what they’re going for from the article) and then the club can basically say to the likes of Votano, DeCourcey, Schiller etc. that Gags is no longer on the type of money that you need to automatically pick him in FG - if they’re good enough to take that position from him their paths aren’t blocked. Then best case scenario one of them overtakes him, you’re not paying Gags too much to play ressies. In a perfect scenario that’s the best way to do it but it’s never a perfect linear situation with people’s feelings and financial needs involved.

My feeling is Gags and Friz are both still playing good football, they are both club legends (especially Gags - just given he's played most of his football here). They're both great representatives off the field with the way they carry themselves and interact with the public, both very professional in their approach to their footy. A 12 month extension is exactly how you repay these kind of players.
Pretty **** form to have either finish their final year of their careers at some random arse club.

400K for Gags, that is the question. Thinking about, particularly after last night, I say the is a reasonable price to keep him one more year. Surely the club could do a deal to give him a job at the club once he retires? So they dont have to pay the full 400k

The club must be thinking why pay $400k when we can probably get him for $250- $300k. He’s not likely to pack up his family and move to Sydney for 100k more, it would be pointless.

Paying everyone 100k extra adds up and clearly they’re trying to put a stop to that. Hopefully they can work something out. Maybe they can offer him a job once he retires if wants

Exactly

Why pay more when you don’t have to.

Thanks for reading my post! 😂

After tax thats only $53k for him, would cost 20k to relocate twice so not worth it.

I'd definitely re sign him. Losing a lot of experience and his leadership with the younger outside backs would be once again useful in 2026.

says here he has a Mutual option?

Though probably less than $400K. But surely wouldn’t be too much less, otherwise why have the option.

There’s not much room in sport for sentiment. But 200+ games for the Knights, I’d hope we make a bit of an exception. Would be good to have around the younger guys. A job, as mentioned, could be a little sweetener.

There is absolutely no room for sentiment for successful teams, you have to be ruthless, if he finds a club and moves on I wish him the absolute best but POS is making sure we don’t do the dumb **** anymore.

And that means paying for sentiment, if we can get him for less than I want the club to do so.

Letting him go is only part of the equation, we need to be sure we have a comparable or better replacement for him. It seems to me we let quality players go regularly without a plan in place as to how we fill that gap in the team.
