Corey Oates

Oates is a Kenny Dowell type. Can be rocks. Can be diamonds. I'd have him here as a WINGER! Can finish a try and really good out of yardage.

Have reflected on this. I think a good player is still in there but I’d rather get Dane back tbh. Corey a bit of a project. Dane’s a sure thing.

whichever one if either, Oates is a winger and would be on winger money, Gagai would want good centre money to maybe play wing, Oates is 4 seasons younger
if we could let players go, Lee, Tuala, Schibs and Mann and sign both we should then be stronger and maybe have money in the bank and have Sasagi, Toa and Hoy along with our developing pommy mates as back up. Now to fix 6 & 7 for the coming seasons

I suspect Shibasaki will take up the player option we gave him for some insane reason. Tuala we might not keep but I doubt it frees up a lot of cap space if we lose him. Lee’s gone and he would have been on decent money. I’ve heard the club wants to re-sign Mann which I think is a mistake, not that I don’t like him as a player, it’s just not the best use of our funds and not a part of the roster in dire need of strengthening in my opinion - Mann doesn’t move the needle for us, Gagai does & Oates might. Definitely need to clear a bit of space and get someone who’s an upgrade in the outside backs right now. I’d be happy to let Lachlan Fitzgibbon go, replace with a cheaper forward, and yeah invest in that backline, but that might be fraught considering his dad runs the club’s major sponsor (which is a bit of a yucky position for the club to be in hahaha).

I'm putting this guy up as a real option. Apparently won't be at the Broncos next year. He is a robust outside back who I have seen bust through straight defensive lines himself and score some powerful solo tries. His starts to sets would be handy, and a combo with Braddy could be lethal. He wouldn't be on huge money but is a representative winger at his best and a change of clubs could be just what he needs.

I’ve been beating the Dane Gagai drum a lot on here but Corey would be the better signing. I can’t believe Brisbane would let him walk. That’s just nuts. I know there’s been all sorts of dramas with him wanting to play in the back row etc but in my opinion he’s been terrific the last couple of weeks since Kevvie put him back in first grade. I’d imagine he’s at the bottom end of his value as a player at the moment so we’d be buying low on a guy who brings so, so much of what we need right now. Elite finisher, top drawer yardage worker with a huge engine (our halves won’t need to scream at him to take his carries), and due to his frame and work rate will sometimes create a little something out of nothing.

Club’s in the market for a right centre, but Corey outside Braddy on the left wing, then Hymel filling in at right centre till Sasagi, Young etc demands that spot? Yeah I’ll take that all day.

Oh yeah I’ve got high hopes for Star and so does the club I think. AFAIK though his preferred spot is the right wing, Corey usually plays on the left. Hymel has been a bit of a do-a-job guy we just plug in where there’s a need. So I can imagine it working well.

Star's main position in under 18s was fullback and in under 20s it was right centre and some fullback.
I think he played some games on the wing, but not many.
I've always thought he would end up on the wing because of his ability to score a try, but he scored a lot of trys at fullback and centre too.
All his best games to date have been at fullback.

For me we need to get rid of Shibs or Tuala if we are going to get an Oates, We have a few too many fringe players as is.

If we could put Tuala in Shibasaki's body we'd have a good player.
I think Tuala does most things right, but he's a bit small. Shiba is the right size but you'll never know when he is going to have a bad day - or just a bad 10 minutes in the middle of a game.

No argument on getting rid of one of those two. Ideally both. 😂

For sure both Lemons, think Musgrove has a bigger upside and his playing for a pie and chips. For some reason thought Oates was older, if his got it out of his head that he sucks as a back rower and is a good winger I'd take him, but what is he really worth to the squad? I wouldn't want to splash anymore than $300k on him and doubt he'd take that.

This guy needs to make up his damned mind!

In my defence I think the first post was when he was playing QCup a few weeks back because he was so set on being a back rower, despite not being that good there.

Last two weeks he’s been playing first grade on the wing again and I think he’s been very strong two weeks straight. Still his position isn’t secure up there though and other clubs might be hesitant to get after him because of his reputation for being very, very dumb - he says he’s committed to playing on the wing again now but he might get bored and change his mind again. So there is some risk. But man, he is a *terrific* winger when dialled in.

Honestly Brisbane have an overabundance of outside backs though so it’s likely someone will have to be cut this off-season and I can’t see it being Xavier Coates or Kotoni Staggs...

Agreed but Tuala has been very poor defensively this season so far too and his work without the ball was the thing that kept getting him picked last year...

Yeah he’s been around for a long time but he’s only 26. Made his debut at 18.

$300K would be fair and I’m not sure he’ll get a better offer at the moment tbh.
