Australia seem to be sweeping the medals in the pool, more than usual.

The real interest will be the second week to see if all the hype about our track and field team is justified. England and some of the African countries usually dominate track and field - but we have been hearing we have a lot of good chances this time around.

I've heard nothing about the cycling this time. It used to be a sport we did well in, but England have been on top for the last few. The fact that we haven't heard anything probably means we aren't going well.
 
Finding it pretty hard to get into these Games I have to say ... the timezone definitely doesn't help.
 
I'm inspired by Cam McEvoy shattering everything we thought about what sprint swimmers were capable of by... training way less. Wish I could go back in time and tell my swim squad coaches that I should definitely be doing fewer laps.
 
Watched a replay of Merewether girl Rose Davies absolutely dominating all the African runners in the 10,000 meters.
Never thought I'd see that again.
It seems like about 30 years since African runners became unbeatable in distance events - let alone able to be beaten by the length of the straight.
 
Torrie Lewis broke her own Australian record and 11 seconds for the first time to get bronze.

Two Australian records for 100 metres broken on a rain soaked track in Scotland.

A Kiwi won the women's gold from the outside lane that looked like it was almost under water.

Pretty obvious the Comm games is on it's last legs.
England and Canada have put in half strength squads and all the best African runners found better things to do.
We even left out our best swimmer, but still smashed all the records.

Dan Andrews saw a very expensive games in regional Victoria was going to be a financial disaster and dropped out.

Scotland might break even by not building any new venues and dropping a heap of events that weren't going to make money - but looking at all the empty grandstands in pretty small venues makes me think they might not break even.

If Australia hadn't sent a pretty strong squad, the whole thing would be a joke.

Just read that 9.85 by Kennedy was the fastest time ever by a white man.

I remember when Patrick Johnson broke 10 seconds 23 years ago they said he was the first person with no African heritage to ever go under 10 seconds. (he is Aboriginal)

A few years later I think the first white runner to break 10 was a Greek guy at the Olympics.

Kennedy is only 21 and most sprinters don't peak till late 20s.

Watched the BBC news and they said they were going to report on the 5k race where Newcastle girls Davies and Hull got gold and silver.
I thought that must make it a very important race.
No. The report was, a brave English girl got the bronze - no mention of who got gold and silver.
 
I stayed up and watched the Silver Ferns in their gold medal match vs Jamaica ... been a tough few years for netball in NZ, the national coach was suspended for about a year for reasons that still seem shrouded in mystery, and the domestic league seems to have pretty much fallen over with nobody wanting to pay for TV coverage (even though it apparently rates very well).

So it was really good to see them get the gold. Grace Nweke is an absolute machine at goal shoot, so mobile and dynamic for such a huge body!
