LIVE LAUGH LOVE
Bird Arrested.

BLUES star Greg Bird was handcuffed and thrown in a police car outside a Brisbane nightclub at 4.30am in a dramatic postscript to Origin II.

Last night the powerhouse five-eighth described his brush with Queensland police as "one of the scariest'' moments of his life.

Bird claimed he was innocent of any wrongdoing and said police let him go after five minutes, telling him "they were just kidding''with his arrest.

The drama unfolded in the hours following the Blues' 30-0 caning by Queensland,as NSW players let their hair down after an intense week. Bird was with Blues teammate Anthony Tupou and among a throng of about 50 people outside the U Bar, a popular Brisbane nightspot.

"It was very scary,'' Bird said. "One of the scariest moments. No one wanted to listen to me and I didn't know what I was going to do. There was pain from the handcuffs but I was more worried about being locked up.

"I walked out of the bar and went across the road to get a cab. There were police there and I asked one of them what was going on. He told me to get off the road.

"I asked him for directions and then he just grabbed me and whacked handcuffs on me. He put me in the car for five minutes and then laughed and let me go. He said he was just kidding.''

In pain with his hands cuffed behind his back, Bird said: "He used a lot of force but I wasn't resisting because I was in shock. Everyone was standing around watching and it was very demoralising.

"It was very uncomfortable, not only because of the cuffs but also because it was the first time I had ever been in the back of a cop car. It was shocking and I was wondering what the hell was happening.''

Queensland police last night said six patrol cars were sent to the U Bar after a brawl was reported. "About 4.30am Queensland police were called to a large brawl at West End,''a spokeswomen said.

"Six police cars attended and as a result three people were arrested and a number of people were moved on. No complaint has been received about the conduct of police regarding this incident and we are attempting to obtain CCTV footage.

"I don't know if he (Bird) was arrested or if he was one of the people moved on.''

Bird has still not been given an explanation for his shock apprehension. "I was just trying to explain that I wanted to go home and then he let me out laughing. I didn't see the funny side at all.'' Bird said he would not make an official complaint.

"After that loss last night I didn't need that,'' Bird said. "I just want to concentrate on football.''

Well, the police seem to have a different view:

Bird's arrest was no joke
June 13, 2008

NEW South Wales rugby league star Greg Bird's arrest after Wednesday night's State of Origin clash was no joke, Queensland Police Minister Judy Spence said.

Ms Spence said six police cars were called after more than 200 people spilled out of a Brisbane nightclub onto the road and began “acting in a disorderly fashion”.

Bird claimed he was standing near a taxi rank at West End after drowning his sorrows following the Blues' State of Origin loss when he was handcuffed by police for no reason.

He told The Daily Telegraph he was innocent of any wrongdoing and said police let him go after five minutes, telling him “they were just kidding” with his arrest.

However, Ms Spence said Bird had failed to comply when police asked that he move off the road.

“The arrest of Mr Bird is no joke, as it has been reported,” she said.

“Mr Bird and obviously a number of other people were not complying with the police direction and that's why they came to the attention of the police on that night.”

After being cuffed and put in a police car, Bird “calmed down, obviously he saw sense”, Ms Spence said.

“He gave the police his particulars and police were confident they could (release) him into the care of his team manager and that's why he was released.”

She said she was comfortable with the officers' decision not proceed with the arrest.

“They took a very sensible decision to release Mr Bird, given that after a few minutes in custody, he obviously saw sense.”

She said police officers showed no favouritism to the high profile sportsman.

“Absolutely not. In fact another person was arrested and then released on the same basis,” she said.

Ms Spence said sportspeople should act like the role models they were perceived to be.

“When prominent sportspeople, who are role models, are drunk and disorderly and disobey police directions, they let down themselves and the sport they represent,” she said.

Agreed.

If Bird has been on the drink and acting like a goose, then throw the book at him.

If Bird is indeed telling the truth and was the victim of police stupidity, then he should sue the pants off the Queensland Police. There's no excuse for that sort of crap to be tolerated if you are innocent.

Is there an actual source for those two quotes, I mean for all we know you two just have good imaginations.

Bird should sue them for every cent he can milk out of them, typical Queenslanders.

Yeh, tough to believe both the Police & Bird.

My question is, what was he doing out at a nightclub after losing that same night? It has trouble written across it.

Bird failed to comply when asked to get off the road!
Gee yeah that deserved being handcuffed! pfft thats ridiculous i have done the same thing drunk and i wasn't hand cuffed he was hand cuffed because of who he was

Both stories sound similar to me, he just didn't move off the road. Stupid cops abusing their power as usual.

After a game like that I would be at a pub drowning my sorrows too........ but wait, I WAS!

Stupid cops. They probably were abusing their power to some extent. They do it everywhere!

I don't know what to believe.

If Bird's story is true the Police should be stood down.

If the QLD Police Force story is true then Bird should face some sort of punishment.

But Birds story about how they said it was a Joke seems a lie, coz they actually put in a report after their shift, about arresting him. So i dont really know who is telling the truth.

Yeah the part where the police supposedly said "we are just kidding" seems a bit weird.
It all doesn't make sense to me..

does anybody else think bird shouldnt be picked for the decider? i no i dont, he just didnt show enough in defence and made some poor decisions and mistakes in attack
