Brisbane Broncos chief Paul White denies Wayne Bennett return rumour

BRISBANE Broncos chief executive Paul White has thrown full support behind coach Anthony Griffin to serve out his NRL contract amid speculation mastercoach Wayne Bennett wants to return to the Broncos next season.

Rugby league circles have been buzzing about the prospect Bennett will leave Newcastle next year because of the club's financial concerns with owner Nathan Tinkler and would look to return home to family in Brisbane.

The Cinderella story had been for Bennett to groom club legend Darren Lockyer into a future head coach, but the retired five-eighth has thus far opted to forge a successful post-playing career in the media and other business interests.

The suggestions going around now are that Bennett will return to the Broncos and help develop one of his former premiership stars, like current NRL assistants Kevin Walters or Terry Matterson, into the head coach.

As one source suggested yesterday, past rumours about Bennett's future, including links to Sydney Roosters, St George Illawarra and Newcastle, have all proven to be correct.

Broncos management are adamant there have been no coaching discussions.

They are well aware of the whispers floating around about the club and believe the push is coming from "ex-players who want to get another earn from the club".

Broncos boss White slammed any suggestion the club was looking beyond the current arrangement with Griffin, who only last year had his contract extended until the end of 2015.

"I should not dignify this with a response but it's absolute rubbish," White said about the Bennett rumours.

The Bennett rumours were first aired in the media when former skipper Gorden Tallis was asked about the speculation on Fox Sports on Monday night and Wendell Sailor was asked likewise on radio.

"The rumours are there and if he did come back I could see him sitting as a coaching co-ordinator with someone like a Kevin Walters or Terry Matterson or an old boy coaching," Tallis said yesterday.

"Is there any truth to it? Time will tell."

Last July, when Brisbane had an 11-6 win-loss record and were entrenched in the NRL top four, Griffin signing a two-year extended deal with the club .

Griffin took the club to just one win from the grand final in his first season in charge, having assumed the role just a week out from the start of the 2011 season when Ivan Henjak was sacked.

Griffin has enforced a harder edge on the Broncos in the offseason and despite a flat first-up loss to Manly, Brisbane showed enormous resolve to win against the odds over St George Illawarra in Wollongong last Friday.

so worst case scenario, Bennett goes back bronco's, probably takes darius boyd with him. Gids goes back to fullback, Roberts goes to halfback and stone comes back to coach. Not too bad really!

I rate stone as a coach, i think he did quite well in 2011 and would be a great long term coach for us. He has a real
passion for the knights to!

i think it's all a load of **** though!

Worse case scenario is Bennett leaves and all who signed with him have a clause in their contract and exercise that clause to get out of the knights contract! I could see that happening if the knights were struggling and a club with better premiership credentials were to approach them!

I can't see the rumour being true though and I think if it was then at least J.Smith would stay because he came here for family reasons.

At least the names below have been enticed by Bennett to the knights:

Gaigai
Mason
Scott
Smith
McKinnon
Boyd
Fa alogo
Tahu
Frei
BJ

A nothing article, might be relevant in round 26, not round 3. The only way I could see Wayne leaving is if we win it this year.

Sounds like they were just mentioning it to get viewers. I think that's the only thing that media sources are going by. Also mentioned by 2 former Bronco players and Bennett's boys.

Oh, and anyone who spreads rumours about Wayne Bennett should prepare for a Bennett backflip on it ;)

Even if this were true which i doubt not all these would leave
Gaigai.... imo would'nt go as he was sacked by the bronco's
Mason ....would stay as its playing for us that he wants to do untill he retires
Scott .....may go but would he get $500,000 a year elsewhere i don't know
Smith........would stay as he came here to be closer to familly
McKinnon....came home so i think he would say
Boyd........would go but only if the bronco's could afford him under the cap
Fa alogo...Faalogo would stay if he was still contracted then anyway as brisbane wont sign him
Tahu........brisbane would'nt sign him anyway
Frei.........would probably go if brisbane wanted him back but may not be able to afford Boyd let alone both of them
BJ..........Where would BJ go brisbane would'nt want him

Mate, if the said players had clauses in their contracts and if Bennett did leave it wouldn't mean that all the players would want to go to the Broncos if Bennett ended up there, they could exercise their clause and end up at any club not just the Broncos. Alot of ifs and buts though. Just can't see Wayne packing up and leaving mid contract.

Mason/Scott/Smith/Tahu don't have long left so no great loss.
Fa'alogo won't be here next year anyway.
Boyd leaving means Gidley could move back to his best position.

Gagai and McKinnon would be bad losses. Frei and BJ also.

Noone should take a rumour Gordon Tallis made up seriously. He'd have to have the smallest brain in the NRL world. He'd only be bringing this up because he's still mad Tinkler got Bennett instead of Souths. I remember he took shots at the Knights, Bennett and Tinkler when Bennett signed with us and he's continued to do so whenever he's got the chance. Trouble making creep.

Wayne Bennett will never leave a job half done he will see out his 4 year contract nothing article

The Bennett Tallis feud goes back donkey's year ... back to when Tallis was still playing under him.

If we don't perform this year, maybe Bennett will see us as a lost cause and head back home, especially if the Tinkler saga escalates and the money dries up, but life will go on.

Let him go. Last season (and last week) we played boring football and still lost. Bring back the cross field kicks and spreading it early.

He is a very old man who is basically part time anyway.
He has brought great support staff, who we need to keep, and his name has attracted some quality players.
If we could sign a Des Hasler or a Bellamy for the million + we spend on the old guy, we would do better.

We probably have the highest paid coach in the league, and the old guy isn't earning it.

And if we had won last week, would he be the best buy the Knights have ever made? Everyone couldn't stop raving about us round 1. TBH I don't think anyone would have beaten Manly that night, they looked unstoppable. Storm got thrashed by Raiders last season, it's round 2.

I find this rumour laughable since Bennett has said numerous times he is going to be committed to his 4 years at the Knights. He wants the club to become successful and I don't just see him leaving like that.
