Fair to say AOB is a rubbish coach? A full strength team minus Ponga and a couple others and there's nothing happening.
There's no resilience, no ability to absorb pressure, defend our line, or sustain any effort for longer than 5 minute periods.

You're not used to how normal teams perform under similar circumstances. Every team in the comp plays a vast majority of the year missing at least one or two of their starting 13. It's supposed to be marginal in its impact on the team.
Ponga wouldn't have fixed many of the problems that plagued us today. It's was quite embarrassing considering how under strength Souths were.

I think maybe we saw how Ponga ends up in the line constantly because we were so short on our edges all the time and Tex didn’t plug those gaps the way Kalyn does.
Not saying KP gets it right all the time but we’re very reliant on him putting out fires, which itself isn’t good news because he’s got that slight, injury-prone frame and likely won’t ever be some lockdown defender laying blokes out like Big Trell does.
We wouldn’t be short so often if we were better in the ruck, our line speed was better, we communicated better in defence (especially regarding spacing) and certain players didn’t clock off at key moments eg chasing hard from marker, the back rowers hustling laterally properly, and yeah the odd very very lazy one on one effort.
In fact the kinds of things we space out on are the exact sort of thing Payten read his players the riot act about when he arrived there and look how good they’re going now.

I've got this funny feeling Mick Potter won't ever step inside the walls of the knights again. He got shat on last time.
Idk to be fair Clune and milford were both grabbed off the scrap heap at the start of the year. Randall should be playing NSW cup. Hoy should probably find a new career. If you put 6. Milford 7. Clune 9. Randall 1. Hoy into the spine of any nrl team and they arnt going to be much chop.
I guess what I'm saying is a lot of this comes down to recruitment. Put AOB in charge of a storm side with Munster, grant, pap etc and have Bellamy coach the team with Randall, hoy and Clune and your probably going to be calling for bellamys head.

We just don't seem to have that will to compete, or at least not for any sustained period.
You watch other NRL outfits and you can just see the difference in their desire and hunger. Their up for it attitude. Ball in hand they are working as one, back line deep, swift passsing of the ball, fast moving attacking line, each player knows their role and is ready. In defence they are one unit working together to slide, ommunicate, and shut teams down.
We get the ball and don't look well polished at all, floating rainbow passes instead of direct snappy passing, players standing near flat footed, no intent to the play. Far too often we are attacking their line and the wrong player gets the ball. In an attacking movement to the wing, it goes through klemmer and saf, or on the 4th klem gets the ball in the middle.
Souths won that game last night because they wanted it more. And that is the biggest issue at the Knights. Not KP being out, or Klune at 7, or Kurt Mann even being on the field. A team with fairly rubbish players that competes hard can win games and look good doing it.

There's a lot of clubs like that in the game today, just crappy teams, I put it down to an ingrained culture now of just overcoaching, everyone copying eachother, not allowing for a natural or unique style at each club anymore. That's one issue. The thing that separates us from the rest though is that we've been crap for a very long time now. Just about every club has had its good period where they had at least a good couple of years. We haven't really had an up period since Joey.
We've had times where it looked like an up period may be blossoming, but only for the hopes to be shot down once more. That's why I think so many have turned on AOB this year. Finals 2 years in a row, things were progressing, AOB was the guy that was slowly taking Browny's rebuild squad to the next level. No one gave us a shot and we beat the Roosters round 1. This is the year where we take another step and progress past the team that just makes the 8 and goes out week 1. And then bam, within a few weeks we are probably just a touch over the worst this club has ever looked. Really makes you wonder what is so deeply wrong with this club, maybe AOB just has no clue as a head coach and we just need the right guy, but I think it's most likely a mixture of both.
Good summary, totally agree with this.
Roster issues this year have been a pretty big factor too. AOB has to cop some of the blame for that, I'm sure if he said "don't re-sign Mann" we wouldn't have. Other aspects like no halfback weren't really within his control.

100% right. The attitude of the team is poor and that stems from a bad culture and ineffective coaching. Not sure why with club legends like Joey and Bedsy involved in the club, but I’m fairly sure AOB is part of the problem.
Anyone who remembers the foundation teams of 88, 89, 90 will remember the passion those blokes played with, and a team made up from other clubs discards and fringe players, with a small core of local juniors, all looking for an opportunity and a chance to play first grade. No club wanted to play the Knights at home in those days, because they knew they were in for a hard physical game, although we didn’t win that many games.
Maybe it’s a generational thing that players don’t respond to those attitudes anymore, but it starts with coaching to instill a work ethic and a sense that you have to EARN your spot in the team and be the player that others want to play with. I don’t think AOB is the man for that job

And why does the fullback pack into the scrum at lock when we are inside our own 20 with the opposition feeding the scrum. Simple kick over the top into the ingoal with no fullback in position and you’ve got either a try or repeat set. Both Hoy and Ponga do it , so it is a coached thing. We’ve been caught out 3 times this year, probably more, including twice by Parra in one game. Dumb sh*t
