Adam O'Brien replacement?

I've always thought the team has fed off Ponga. And Ponga's lack of commitment to certain areas of the game was something of a cancer to the team. Once Ponga realised that his position in the QLD squad was lost to a younger hungrier version of himself, something woke up inside him. The teams form changed immediately.

But the turnaround in form coinciding with AOBs position being on the line, seems an uncanny coincidence and probably not a coincidence.
Cronk actually had some interesting thoughts about it on NRL360 that might coincide with some stuff Ponga has said himself.

Bit it's also amazing the difference a bit of confidence can do for a team.

If you listen to Billy Slater he says that Ponga has been in brilliant form for the last 15 months. He said he was crucial in them winning origin last season, and apart from being impacted by concussions and the position change has been outstanding ever since. Think I’d agree with that. Clearly has nothing to do with missing origin this year, imo, because Slater rates him so highly.

I think last years Origin series working so closely with Billy Slater was the catalyst for what we’re seeing now. Think he was given a real education on what the modern fullback should be and we saw flashes of it. He was extremely impressive when we got spanked at Brookie first game after origin, then got knocked out 5 minutes in against the Roosters and we didn’t see him again.

Totally, that Origin series was the best he'd played in a few years.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who clocked how good he was in that Manly game.

Just as a bit of an aside to the coach conversation specifically, one thing our form change and harmony should provide, is making Newcastle an enviable and inviting club to want to play for...

It will be interesting to see what our form and current stability and harmony provides Peter Parr with in regards to our attraction and retention strategies over the next off season or so.

Another young Knight just signed with the Raiders for 2 years.
There has been a lot of traffic heading from Newcastle to Canberra over the years.
There is a young Canberra forward named Mooney who would be a brilliant forward signing if we could get him, and at least have a bit of traffic heading from Canberra to Newcastle. This Mooney could be our next BK

I've made that point before about how Canberra love Knights players. Off the top of my head, these are the players that have switched clubs in relatively recent years:

Canberra to Knights:

Leo Thompson, Adam Elliott, Mitch Barnett

Knights to Canberra:

Joe Tapine, Tom Starling, Zac Woolford, Simi Sasagi, Hudson Young, TPJ (?), Pasami Saulo, Mitch Henderson, Danny Levi

(Not counting players like Edrick Lee who had a club in between changing teams). Others on here might know of more players to add above.

Noah Ryan and Caleb Garvie have landed in Canberra

I was reading the other day that David Furner has stayed in Newcastle since coming here as assistant coach to O'Brien in 2020.
I don't think it's a complete co-incidence that heaps of our juniors have been "scouted" by Canberra in the last 3 years, with a Canberra insider like Furner having knowledge of our set-up - not to mention our pathways coaches, Dobson and Monaghan, are both guys who came through the Canberra set-up in Furner's time.

Furner has been a full-time assistant with the Bulldogs and Tigers since leaving, why would he have a hand in recruitment and staff hirings between clubs he's in competition with?

His father virtually started the Raiders. He was the coach for the first 5 years and before that he was coach of Quenbeyan Blues, who funded the Raiders. His brother was also CEO and David himself was a player and then a coach.
If you cut him he'd bleed some horrible lime green colour.

yeh I think this mcdermott guy has a lot to do with the success. I remember the interview he did at the start of the season and he was saying hes been coaching for so long hes more or less figured out the pattern of what to do to get teams firing at the back end of the year. thought he was just talking himself up but now not so sure.

at 25min but from 16-30 is worth listening to

Head coach is just a cog in the machine, surely an important one, but still just part of the overall machine.

If a team isn't winning they bear the brunt. But we all know there is more to a team performing than just the head coach. Assistants play just as important a role as they implement the head coach vision.

The players have to buy in and trust the process and all the coaches play a vital role in getting players buying in, keeping them motivated and performing.

If/when we move OB on, I'd like to see McDermott get a shot at it, seems a natural progression. The players know him, already appear to be working well with him.

Rather him then another unproven up and coming coach that hasn't head coached at a top level of Rugby League.

Having Blake Green as the attacking coach also, can’t be understated, our attack has been humming. You could argue we are one of the best attacking teams right now.
Wouldn’t argue that at all. I’ve watched a few if the other teams and not being biased here but there’s something very special going at this club.

Bloody hell I hope they just wipe the floor with that trash today
