Samaritans Winter Appeal Launch
As the Knights take to the field against the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday 7th May at EAS, so too will Samaritans as they launch their 2006 Winter Appeal to a parochial Hunter crowd.
While the Knights entertainment at the game will take on a Mission Impossible theme, Samaritans hope that Knights fans, and indeed the wider Newcastle community, will help to make this year’s Winter Appeal their “mission possibleâ€.
As the weather changed with a winter blast this past weekend, our minds and hearts turn to those people who don’t have a roof over their heads.
“When you are heading for the warmth and comfort of home, think of the many people who don’t have a home to go to, a blanket or a jacket to wear to warm them against the chilling wind and those whose cupboard may be bare,†Samaritans CEO, Cec Shevels urges the community.
“Every year the Samaritans Winter Appeal reminds us how lucky we really are to have warmth and a roof over our heads," said Knights prop Josh Perry.
"I couldn't begin to imagine what it must feel like not to be able to escape the freezing cold for six months of the year."
The Samaritans nine Emergency Relief (ER) outlets come under enormous pressure during the colder months, especially this year. No sooner do they get a delivery from a local parish, gym or school food drive, than they find the cupboard is empty again.
They are continually collecting and buying food to keep something in the cupboard to give to the many disadvantaged people that walk through their door each day.
Samaritans encourage Knights supporters to bring along a can of soup or new or good quality blankets to the game on Sunday 7th May, which can be dropped off at Samaritans collection points at the front gates.
"Just a couple of dollars can make all the difference to someone's life," Knights five-eighth, Kurt Gidley said.
"I hope everyone at the ground on Sunday can reach into their pockets and bring a can of soup or part with a blanket to help society's real battlers."
The donated items will be used to stock up Samaritans Emergency Relief (ER) outlets, which come under enormous pressure during the colder months, and will be disseminated to the many disadvantaged that walk through their doors each day.
As well as restocking the cupboards of the ER facilities, Samaritans are aiming to raise $130, 000 for this year’s Winter Appeal to help those in need.
“We are continually overwhelmed with the spirit of community here in Newcastle. Novocastrians are renowned for helping those less fortunate and we are confident that with the generosity of Knights fans and the Newcastle community in general, we will be able to reach our Winter Appeal target.†said Mr Shevels.
Samaritans is the welfare arm of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle and are as proudly Hunter, as the Newcastle Knights. All funds raised by the organisation are used within the local community to support those less fortunate.
People can also support the appeal any time by making donations directly to Samaritans Head Office in Brunker Road, Broadmeadow or by cash at any branch of the Greater Building Society.
