2026 Recruitment And Retention

I don’t know this reeks of having real doubts about Sharpe as a half and looking for an out.

I know you don't want to accept it but they're actually giving him that money to play starting hooker, and that's what they're telling him. It's basically Brailey's current deal.

Sounds like he’ll go to the Cowboys
I didn't say I liked it, haha.

If they were selling him a shot at playing in the halves with more money, a longer deal, living 45 minutes from his family he wouldn't have bothered talking to the Cows.
I’m actually okay at this point if the cited contract number is accurate.

It also kind of seems like we’re recruiting based on AOB’s vision of who should play where. A new coach can’t be cornered into that surely? Recruiting of spine players should be stopped until we have a coach or we’ll end up with blokes on 3 and 4 year deals the coach doesn’t want. Like Souths paying $700K a year for Lewis Dodd, who Wayne doesn’t rate.

If that means we miss someone so be it. Better than being stuck with unwanted contracts.

Unless, of course, they’re just doing the interview progress for appearances sake and they plan to just appoint Blake no matter what…

What this maybe points to is a loss of faith in/patience with Matt Arthur on Blake’s part (who I’m just going to assume is getting the job now). I do think Sandon is very skillful out of hooker but yeah he has never had a start there at any level of footy let alone played huge minutes there.

If this is the road we’re going down, chasing a good attacking 9 and spending decent money on it, I don’t like it, but give me option 2 (trying to get Tyran Wishart out of his contract). Sandon is a good half who yeah could *probably* go good at hooker, Tyran is a guy where I suspect 9 is actually his best position (I know this is an unpopular take but I think he’s meh in the halves, he looks good because he plays for Melbourne and Bellamy can game plan well around player weaknesses, but I don’t think he’s a true 6 or 7). He has 13 starts there in Cup for example and has scored 8 tries in those games. Got a big frame, good power runner and defender. You could sell me on him as an ALDI Harry Grant & or Buderus 2.0 because having that size & physicality lowers the margin for error playing in that position. He fits “specialist starting hooker, back up half if needed” more cleanly for mine.

Signing with the Cows would be such a roadblock for his career. If they wanted him in the halves with Deardon so bad they wouldn’t have re-signed Clifford who is plod.

More security of 4 years, more money, a shot at a definite starting position in either hooker or halves, plus being closer to family sounds more attractive than being *possibly* the partner of the QLD halfback, while living in a place that’s as humid as Satan’s Anushole for less money.

Whatever the case, good luck to him.

I’ve heard the offer Wishart turned down from the Dragons was 450 a season so maybe I’ve been over-estimating how much he’d get offered.

If I were betting on it, I’d say the whole interviewing candidates is just for show and the job is Greens if they’re adamant Sharpe is in the halves and Smith is the 9

Why would he go to the cowboys? They aren’t even sure who will be coaching them next year? 😂
Seriously though, not that I think we’re lucky enough to land him, I can’t help thinking they may be offering him hooker with the thought that KP may not see out his full contract?

All of Payten's assistants are getting the sack but unsure about Payten.

Payten has a 3rd and 5th place finish to justify his position with at the end of the day, I think he’s probably safe. Also as I understand it their cap is sneaky more ****ed than ours. They don’t have a $1.4 and $1.3 million deal on the books but Dearden, Cotter, Nanai, Taumalolo all on 900-1 million+ and those aren’t their only big deals (one of those clubs where f-ing everyone decent to good is getting paid). If Sandon holds that 6 jersey for $433K that helps them out heaps I’d imagine.

From memory, that's pretty much what happened when we signed AOB.

I don't reckon it's an unpopular take, hooker is absolutely Tyran's best position.
