2025 Recruitment And Retention

Carter Gordon has signed with the titans. Toohey said we spoke to him but believed he stay in rugby? I wonder how far we took it.

I’m pretty sure they had an informal chat but word was that he was keen to get home to QLD so titans and dolphins were the most logical leaders.

Not sure on his background of league but we are better suited to chasing Pezet or a similar level origin u19 type half than experiment with union players I reckon

Yes let’s get Leo on a long term deal. Although he could just as easily say no and test the open market like T Riddle did. A fact that some still haven’t grasped.

The Knights are looking to upgrade and extend Leo.

Leo is currently signed to the end of 2025.
Lucas should be a big priority too.

I don't like throwing a call like this out too lightly but you look at Hudson Young getting a start for the Blues as a backrower who can cover centre and IMO it's reasonable to infer the Lucas could easily become a representative level player. The versatility he has provided us this year has been superb for a kid with <20 NRL games under his belt. Not only can he 'do a job' in multiple positions he can provide effective contributions across those positions.

It's possibly a lazy comparison given their comparable positional trajectories but if I had to compare him to a past player it'd probably be Luke Lewis - Lewis obviously exploded onto the scene and played rep footy in the backs before transitioning to the forwards but there's plenty of similar characteristics. Quality line running, versatile skill set, hunger for doing tough work on both sides of the ball. Plenty of things for Lucas to develop as he gets more comfortable at NRL level but he's got so many quality attributes already and is such a valuable player to have in the squad.

Most surprisingly good rookie in a while. No fanfare whatsoever coming into grade, just a local kid who's bounced around the outside backs and five-eighth in the juniors, played a couple years of NSW Cup. I thought he was going to be Brayden Musgrove 2.0. Now he stands today as one of the more promising young backrowers in the comp, fast, physical, effort.

Lucas comes from the same small town just outside Wollongong that Adam Clune came from.
He was a lifelong Knights and Andrew Johns fan and came to us because he was a fan.
We didn't recruit him - he came to us looking for a start.

The difference between Lucas and other good players is that Lucas continues to improve. I can't see his ceiling at all.

Off all the most elite footballers, particularly those that enjoyed long careers the one thing imo that sets them apart from their less accomplished colleagues was their capacity to improve into deep maturity. Players like Corey Parker who physically dominated Origin as a middle forward at 33, something he wasn't nearly capable of in his mid to late 20s.

Lucas has that quality about him I reckon

The thing that really lets you know how little fanfare there is is that people keep referring to him as a local. He’s not. He’s from the South Coast. I don’t think he was even in our system till he wasn’t offered a spot in Flegg after his time in Steelers SG Ball.
Oh god, just when the "local players have more heart" crew thought they had a win!
