2025 pre season thread

Why, what coaching or sports science backgrounds does he have?

He couldn't be less qualified.

We moved on from jobs for the boys in the zero's, professionals only please.
100%. A few of the club legends are Knight Ambassadors & would be on the payroll , always be in and around the place . A position similar to what Brisbane have moved Langer into . At a function last year & saw a photo of the Knights football department . Must have totalled 50/60😳. Coupled with the COE . Knights foundation coaches could only dream of the resources available now ! Thanks Wests 😂

I assume rhetorical ?

Pretty much goes without saying ( although no doubt still fly over a certain persons head) Figure heads mostly, mentor the spine players, set culture.

"Bedsy would be perfect to head up the Elite Spine Academy in the Pathways. Johns brothers on the regular. Robbie O."

Elite Spine Academy ...I mean seriously? Why not call it the "Super Special Number One Best Elite Spine Force Academy" if we're making stuff up....

There's already specialist coaching for specialist positions at the Knights, Joey Johns AFAIK is still a consultant, and Matty doesn't coach. There's no insight here, they're already doing this stuff.

I agree with Gandpa, coaching is a skill that requires training and practice to develop.

BTW. Matty chose the media over coaching for peace of mind.

PS. I'm all for bringing in club/NRL legends to motivate, inspire and develop club culture but every great former player isn't automatically a great coach and every great coach doesn't have to have been a great player AND the Knights already do this stuff (like every other team) on the regular anyway.

PPS. How many examples do we need that TV commentators, no matter how good they were as players typically don't make good coaches (Slater isn't an exception here either as he's an assistant at the Storm and may be the heir apparent if Bellyache ever does retire).
Joey left early last year. He said it on immortal behavior due to a medical condition he can't drive alone from Sydney to Newcastle.

But, but, but who's going to staff the Academy of Awesome Eliteness now?

In all seriousness, I did wonder if Joey was still doing it but could only find he had recommitted in 2023, thanks for the update.

PS. A certain someone still seems to believe that the ability to coach is something that just transfers from a player's playing career, pointing out that a bloke like Matty Johns ruled out coaching 20 years ago (and has knocked back all offers since) doesn't factor into fantasy.

I'm hopeful we get BA for 2026 year.

OB hasn't been able to coach us to a top 4, though we have had the team to achieve it.

BA has the runs on the board that he can coach, can make top 4 placings.

Logical next step in development of the club is to upgrade the coach.
He also won a spoon

he's a born winner, something in short supply at the Knights.
4 finals series in 5 years. Two women's titles...more winning than at the Bulldogs.

PS. That wasn't the point Sarge was making, culturally Johns wasn't a great example off the field even while he was an immortal on it.

Also played in an era when culture wasn't even a word 😀.
Joey was as loose as anybody .
Been a halves coach at a number of clubs
Not shore even he can coach what he had .
Man was a freak . As you said a born winner. Not many of them anywhere!

there are some videos on youtube of Joey going through attack and kick drills with a young Cleary. Watch them

Then watch Cleary every time he's within the opposition 40

So? As I pointed out your Elite Special Squad Academy take was nonsense, the Knights already do specialist training and Joey has long consulted at the club as a specialist coach, and as it has since been pointed out he's now quit that for health reasons. Do keep up.

Cleary is another born winner . Even heard Joey say he is better then him . He will obviously be an immortal down the track . Not going to argue I'm bloody 65 years old . Don't sit around watch YouTube Videos 😂

By all accounts he was the hardest training player at the club, if not in the sport, and set extremely high standards while he was here. I’d say he was a great example off the field.

People just read that he took a few party pills in the off season and say he was a loose cannon, but there was a reason he was so good on the field, he lived and breathed the game and pushed himself extremely hard.

He's admitted this himself. It doesn't dismiss his legacy by pointing this out.
As someone who was only 30ish in the 90's , I don't have to read about it. As Joey said himself one of the reasons he left Newcastle was because it was like living in a goldfish bowl. If you are a knights player prob still is

You said..."People just read that he took a few petty pills in the off-season and say he was a loose cannon,"....but Johns admitted he took drugs, particularly ecstasy all through his career.
Yeah mostly in the off season and there were years where he didn’t take any at all. Most NRL players have probably done the same. They just haven’t shown the integrity to fess up.

Off field with his role at the club as a player through training, gym and injury recovery he was by all accounts the best. That’s what drives the culture at a club. I doubt as coach he’d be saying “right boys, out on the recreational drugs tonight, woo!”

He has worked at numerous clubs over the years, and cross codes as well. Not like he’s not in demand for his coaching work.
