Yeah his job in the team was to be a low volume, wicket taking strike bowler, while someone like Gillespie toiled into the wind at the other end. They didn’t care if he leaked runs - they asked him to bowl as fast as he could, use shock tactics, etc - because the other bowlers were so economical & gave them the luxury of rarely worrying about how long the third seamer would need to bowl for.
I think it’s conceivable that if he played in a different era he would have changed his approach a bit. Either way he was a long term, key player on the greatest test team ever, he took a lot of wickets, and it would seem rough to ding him for playing a role which fit with a team with McGrath and Warne on it. Maybe his approach would be different if he didn’t play with them. What we do know is that the approach he did take worked really well.
