2024 Recruitment and Retention Thread - Rebuild 2: This Time It’ll Work For Sure (Unironically)

The fact that both English kids were negotiating with multiple years left on their contracts must mean the rules over there are different, but regardless NRL contracts for 2024 can’t be registered and announced until November 1. Seems the chances of getting either early are slim so don’t expect to hear anything official until after that date.

It’s interesting that Wigan are willing to let John Bateman leave for a transfer fee but seem intent on keeping KPP.

Article about Young coming to the attention of a lot of potential employers at the WC. Even says Radradra is getting a million a year to play wing for an English Union side, and wonders if they will make an offer we can't match for Young.

Really, instead of a paranoid piece about the one bright point of our season, I'd like a story about the positive effects of a world cup campaign for Dom. Maybe one about him possibly being pushed in to the centres given the strength of the other English wingers leading to food for thought for Obi when he kills it there? Citing one example of a guy who has gone across to play union really shows me that probably isn't the threat. I'd say another NRL club is more likely to make a play for Dom, he is in the shop window every week here.
 
Not sure, but I think he is better as a wing for Newcastle. With his carries and finishing.

I would have Gagai on the other wing. He played his best football for QLD in that position.

Centers - Mapa and
Best/Hunt

If Dom was in the centers who would be our wingers?
 
I'm a fan of big centre's and Imo and from what I watched of him playing in England he is a centre.
BUT Young is doing a good job on the wing, his hands are good, his kick returns are good he knows how to score he's fast and can break tackle's.
His turn and chase is a bit slow but he's a big man, I can put up with that when he is doing everything else well. Besides he will only get better at everything including his turn and chase.
Which is only a problem close to the line 20 or 30 out max anything more and he is very likely to catch them, also his front on defence is good.
Leave him on the wing and sign him long term now. If Ponga is going to 6 then train Dom as F/b and see how he goes if he can't do it then buy someone.
IF he can, he could be bloody great at 1 and the trainers would know pretty quickly at training.
If not then Mapa inside him and Gagai on the other wing which of course is more likely, but it is something to think about.
Especially with no footy on at the moment lol.
 
AOB will never put gagai on the wing because he's a so called market player and would risk losing him. Do not disagree that he shouldn't be on the wing but won't happen

If AOB thinks like that then more of the same crap team. Seriously we were lucky we didn't get the spoon. I give AOB 10 rounds next year.

Gagai is close to the end of his career and if his defence continues to be as bad as it was this year, we will not want to keep him.
 
One thing I’ll say in his defence, he also had to make reads for young who truly wouldn’t have a clue how to defend in our current defensive system.

If we can't offer him a competitive team and he chooses to move to a "better" club, you really can't blame him. Or really anybody else.

If he leaves for the money, again, we haven't developed him he came here already done. His start in the NRL took a bit to get going as would anyones, and he got injured and played injured which hampered his settling in to the NRL.

Dom doesn't owe us anything.

Agreed that he doesn't owe us anything, has no ties to the place at all. But I wouldn't say he was already done when he got here. He was not a finished product when he first got here and no matter how incompetent you think the Knights are, you can't tell me he didn't learn anything in two years of training in a professional NRL club setup for the first time coming from England.
