2024 Recruitment and Retention Thread - Rebuild 2: This Time It’ll Work For Sure (Unironically)

He looked good against St George and I'm disappointed, but the people at the club obviously see more and can do comparisons, so have to trust them. I was more impressed in that game by the hooker dude

Yeah this was odd. McKinnon seemed to be arguing points that Barry had already made, stating he thinks Lucas and others overtook Keeley, which was what Baz was eluding too about training and attention to detail.

Not sure what McKinnon was trying to get at in the end.

In the end, as Baz said if Keeley knuckled down and trained house down like Lucas did last bulked up (also to an extent as did Can’t) he might have been in a better position here.

I’m still super bummed to lose him as he no doubt has a future, he just needs to be patient. Needed to bulk up a fair amount too.

Going to be very interested in who comes out of pre season for 24 as the surprise considering “glamour” kids like Keeley and Martin may not be there.

As has been said, likes of Crossland have shown if you work your *** off and pay attention to detail. Your chance will come. Crossy actually has a chance to realise his dream of playing “300 games for the Knights”

Martin has a top 30 deal for next year, are we losing him also?

A long and pretty balanced article on Jack Cogger.
Only talks about his time at Penrith - nothing about where he might play for the Knights.
Very interesting article. I’m excited about the halves competition next year. And hooker. When all fit we will have Hastings, Gamble, Cogger, Brailey and Crossland, all vying for half and hooker roles. At the very least we will have strong backups if one of them gets injured.

Highly unlikely to fit all of those in the starting 17, at this point I think the starting halves will be Hastings and Gamble. Brailey starting 9 with Crossland 14 on the bench. Cogger is the new Clune, but I have this feeling he is, will be better really putting pressure on Hastings and Gamble. At 25, the confidence he is playing with, such a good buy from the Knights.

Which is more likely. The bloke who couldn't nail a starting spot in England last year has suddenly become an elite half, or playing behind JFH, Leota, Yeo and Leniu is the easiest gig in the NRL.

Unless Cogger is bringing those forwards with him all these articles are just blowing smoke.

Hard agree. To me I did t see him pull the moves Gamble did throughout final part of season. Some great attacking play I genuinely didn’t think he had in him. Cogs played good controlled performance in a quality team.

Our attack needs a lot of hard work into it as it’s not always off a good go forward, more quality structure and sheer pace and brilliance from Ponga and Best.

I’m keen to see what Green can get out of the team. Our spine depth is really solid - so long as Hastings and Pong are fit majority of the year. To be fair, it still comes down to them. A fit Brailey wouldn’t hurt to get forwards momentum.

The thing Cogger showed this year is that he’s a capable role player who can fill in as either the left or right sided half (or at 9 at a pinch) and do a job, and also he’s very conscious that the best thing he can do for a team is generate space for better players, which I found Clune never did as much as we’d like him to.

I don’t think he showed Hastings’ ability to organise really effective shape or to read a defence and pull the right rein consistently, nor Gamble’s extra bit of spark and dangerous end product.

Reckon he’s a great squad player and an upgrade on Clune in that respect, but I don’t think AOB will be in a hurry to break up the halves partnership for the most prolific try scoring team in the comp. Nor should he.

Cogger has a really good kicking game and that’s probably his only real path into the first team as Gamble and Hastings are both capable in that regard but not pinpoint accurate nor do they have the big booming kicks. But that’s not enough on its own.

Pryce has a better chance of taking Gamble’s jersey just because of how fast and agile he is, but he’ll have to do a long apprenticeship first and show a really good attitude I reckon.

I’ll also add that Cogger’s impact in the grand final has more to do with Luai being a colossally overrated ball stopper who on top of that was playing with a badly injured shoulder, than his own brilliance. Also Broncos doing an all time choke.

I forgot about Pryce being in the mix for 6. Still quite an unknown factor at NRL level. Could possibly see him in the backs (center, wing) before 6. But who knows. The trials will be interesting viewing. You see all the fringe guys getting a go and how they perform pre-season.

I don’t think Luai will leave the Panthers, he has been playing with some of his teammates since he was a kid. He
could accept a big money offer from a team like the Bulldogs or Tigers and never play finals football again or stay with the Panthers for less money and try to win more premierships.

He has won 3 premierships,
Why not chase the money now?
While he still can.

Toohey thinks his Dad wants him to test the market, so he might only be here for another year. Club wants him longer though.
I do remember hearing that now. Times have changed, once upon a time you'd have at least played first grade and played it well before you thought you could get more elsewhere. As it stands, who is going to offer him more than minimum wage. His choices might be dogs or tigers because they are desperate, or Melbourne on minimums if you think it is best for your game.

Telegraph so likely to be mostly speculatory but nonetheless.

Allege Tigers will offer 800k+/season deal after November 1.

Says we're coming in with 700k+ over 3 years.
Hmm sign with the club he grew up with who made second week of the finals or sign with the back to back wooden spooners for 14% more money, I know who I would be picking.
