2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Won’t be deathriding the kid but I‘m always gonna be a bit wary of getting too excited about a kid who looks really really good in the Super League. It’s a roll of the dice no matter how good they’ve been over there. Oliver Gildart was an absolute stud over there but has slammed into a wall playing against NRL athletes.

I can see KPP is very big and he looks to be skillful, we just won’t know if he can replicate that over here until if and when he suits up for us.

It’s a pretty highlights reel but I’m not sure I see anything in there which convinces me he’s obviously a better prospect than Nanai and Luki as was suggested in here earlier. And yeah I’m a little worried that he isn’t absolutely bursting through the line and scoring playing against little white guys over in England… I don’t think it’s that crazy a concern to have. Sione is taking souls over there and you wouldn’t call him an amazing athlete at NRL level
Ahem.

I HAVE SPOKEN.

Unless you’re calling me Harvstradumbass…
This sounds great, but have not been able to find any evidence in the Telegraph.
Possible to put story evidence on this site HarVee?

Nearly half a dozen NRL clubs have expressed interest in signing the veteran front-rower for the 2023 season, but none can make Taupau a concrete offer until the NRL and Rugby League Players’ Association sign off on a new collective bargaining agreement.

Parramatta and Newcastle were two of clubs reportedly interested in signing Taupau before the World Cup. The Knights have lost David Klemmer to the Wests Tigers since then, while Eels coach Brad Arthur spoke glowingly of Taupau and how he would suit the club’s front-row rotation when first linked to the grand finalists in July.

The cap is expected to rise from $9.3m to $10.5m in 2023, but a large portion of the extra money made available will need to cover players on the minimum wage, whose salaries will rise from $80,000 to $150,000, as well as players on ratchet clauses whose deals increase in accordance with any increase in the cap.

Newcastle Rebels have named a training squad.
REBELS: Timanu Alexander, Cameron Anderson, Garry Anderson, Mitchell Black, James Bradley, Jayden Butterfield, Sam Clune, Ryan Glanville. Luke Higgins, Luke Huth, Connor Kirkwood, Matthew Moon, Brayden Musgrove, Lachlan O'Brien, Chad O'Donnell, Dylan Phythian, Bayden Searle, Wyatt Shaw, Lincoln Smith, Ben Stone, James Taylor, Josh Toole, Honeti Tuha, Jack Welsch, Joe Woodbury, Jayden Young.

So we can assume Black, Huth, Musgrove, Lachlan O'Brien, Phythian, Shaw and Tuha are not training with the Knights part time squad this year.

No Heath Gibbs, Liam Wilkinson, Cal Burgess, Cooper Jenkins - so those are guys who are possibly doing part time training.

Looks like we've signed a halfback named Ryan Rivett from the Sharks, originally from the Gold Coast. Already with us but not sure what type of deal it is. Will still be eligible for Jersey Flegg this season and was apparently meant to be one of the Sharks development players for 2022.

Our other number 7 for Flegg, Liam Sutton, played Mathews for the Sharks. I wonder if they played together?

Is it rumour 0r we signed him ?

So I wonder whether the Knights are looking at playing Toni Tupouniua in the second row in first grade at some point next year.

We are not sure what type of multi year contract he has signed.

It doesn’t mean it’s a top 30 deal, at least not straight away. Titan Sports uploaded a similar thing when Crokes signed a full time contract a while back but then he was separately elevated to the top 30 later on. It just means he has full time work as a professional footballer now, basically, which is something he hasn’t had at previous clubs.

Topouniua will be in trouble if he is announcing a firstgrade contract before the club, so it has to be a second tier deal.
Reserve grade second row is looking a bit crowded with Johns, Topouniua, Cant, Keeley and maybe Jones or Fitz.
