2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Young is not a fullback nor will he ever be. Gone are the days when a player who can catch and pass will do the job at fullback, it's probably the most crucial position in the game nowadays, and if we're ever to be serious about playing finals footy we won't be doing so with Dominic Young at fullback.

Even if we don’t get Garrick we should still sign a fullback for depth. We simply just can’t rely on Hodgson who has barley played any footy.

If we don't sign a good fullback, we shouldn't move Ponga.
That was the problem last time.
Ponga is a cancer at fullback. He is so so trash in so many areas of the game, the handful of areas he's supposed to excell in he can't because the team around him is so shlt and poorly drilled, he'd be better off getting the ball more often and being more involved.

Leave fullback to someone who wants to do the tough small jobs. We'll be better off.

Think our season, non wooden spoon that is, depends on us getting Brooks. We can leave Ponga at 1 until get suitable replacement and Gamble, Mann, Clune and Crossland can fill in at 6 whoever is going best

Just watched eng vs Greece. Few thoughts are:
- we should be getting young and KPP practicing AFL style jump/catch and kicking bombs right all day.
- english recruits have been good so far. Wouldn't be surprised to see hodgeson make 1 his own next year if we don't sign Garrick.
- in the days of 'floating bombs' etc from the likes of Cleary, Burton, etc I reckon our long kicking game will be a weakness with brooks/ponga/Brailey.
- I reckon aob is ok. Probably not the best coach in the nrl but not the worst either.
- harder to justify pongas 1.1 million price tag at 5/8. Your luai and walkers of the world arnt on 1.1 mil. Out right side attack should be ok with brooks KPP gagai young. Ponga used to look awesome going left. Would be great to have a backrower in the kikau mold to get those plays going again.

Agree with most of it. You do have Cameron Munster who is a 5/8.

That hard running backrower hitting the edge off ponga was Fitzy. I hope he is injury free and can hit that form again and combine on the left edge with ponga. But more like wishful thinking at this stage.

Well, there goes that idea it seems..

"Manly have landed a significant signing coup before the November 1 open market begins by locking in point scoring wizard Reuben Garrick to a long-term deal.
The Sunday Telegraph has learnt that Garrick has agreed to stay at Manly for the next five seasons with the 25-year-old committing to a four-year extension."
Dumb move by him. Almost halved his potential earnings by stating at a club where he’ll be only a back up fullback.
We desperately need brooks now so Ponga can stay at 1

Was going to say. That's pretty major news. Ponga probably should stay at f/b. I really don't think we have anyone else? Hodgson seems like a long shot. Has he been good in the games he's played in NSW cup? If we get Brooks. I say Tyson Gamble is 6. Ponga stays at the back.

Disagree. It's a good move for him. Long term security at a club which has had better success than us for a while. Turbo plays, what, 5-6 games per year outside of Origin? Garrick has probably negotiated that into his deal, knowing he'll play FB in 1sts regularly. We're a basket case.

Not to sure about this. None of the players ever know the game plan and look lost in both defence and attack. He took a fairly good roster and it's been slowly getting worse in his time at the knights. Players and coaching staff leaving. The Mitchell Peacse ****-up. Anyway we will know for sure mid next year weather he is a good coach or not.

Based what the players say they do not have the confidence to execute the game plan and we end up playing a very basic game in attack and our defence normally crumbles under pressure. The coach must instil confidence in the team otherwise we are not going to progress much no matter who we sign.
