2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Hosking would’ve been a good pick up for the tigers but I’m interested to see how he goes in the panthers system, if he puts his head down, Which he will then the worlds his oyster.

The thing Cogger and Hosking have in common is that they'll both train the house down.
It's pretty clear that Penrith are training at a different level to other clubs, and buying in guys who will thrive under that regime is a good idea.
Cogs was always in our top 2 or 3 trainers and Hosking is a gym junkie who kept himself as fit as any firstgrader while training with the part timers, working a proper job and training by himself - just for fun.

The daily telegraph is reporting:

“Newcastle is pushing for Manly’s Reuben Garrick to be granted an immediate release — a move that would allow Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga to shift directly into the halves”

Great news for us, hopefully we can get the deal done for next season.
Imo the reason Ponga was moved out of the halves so quickly last time is because we didn't have a decent fullback to replace him with.
Watson was atrocious.

Garrick and a good half would be nice.

Knights swoop for Manly’s Reuben Garrick, plot Kalyn Ponga switch
The latest big move in the NRL transfer market could have big ramifications for two clubs — and a State of Origin star.

Newcastle is pushing for Manly’s Reuben Garrick to be granted an immediate release — a move that would allow Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga to shift directly into the halves.

Garrick, 25, has a contract at Brookvale for next season but the Knights are anxious for the prolific point scorer to play fullback next season.
Should Manly refuse to release Garrick, Newcastle would need to wait until November 1 — next Tuesday — to lodge a formal offer for 2024.
Newcastle has long-term interest in Garrick but the Knights’ interest would wane for 2024 if he’s not released by Manly for 2023.
The Daily Telegraph has been told talks between both clubs over Garrick are continuing.

Newcastle want Ponga in the halves but are unable to complete the switch until the club acquires a first string fullback. That, the club thinks, would be Garrick.

During such an unstable period at the club, Manly may be reluctant to allow crowd favourite Garrick to walk out – thus creating further headlines for the already embattled club.

Manly fullback Tom Trbojevic is recovering well from a season-ending shoulder injury and will certainly be fit and ready for round one next season.

In a text to The Daily Telegraph, Trbojevic wrote: “I am going well and, yes, I will be good to go for round one.”

It remains unknown whether his return will impact Manly’s decision over Garrick, who has ably substituted for Trbojevic in recent years.

Garrick is being paid winger’s money at Manly but could earn considerably more as a fullback.

The Sea Eagles have no immediate plans to release Garrick early but would carefully consider their position should the star player express a strong desire to play fullback.

Garrick won’t play fullback at Brookvale given he is behind Trbojevic with young Kaeo Weekes stamped as a future fullback along with Tolu Koula.

While no offer has been lodged, Manly has plans to extend Garrick.

The Sea Eagles may feel that letting Garrick depart now would leave the club short of depth in the outside backs.

Garrick scored 162 points this year and a stunning 334 points in 2021. He has spoken previously about an aspiration to play fullback.

When asked about playing fullback back in April, Garrick said: “I enjoy it. It’s a bit of a change-up from wing.”

Former Manly coach Des Hasler, when asked about Garrick switching to fullback, said in July: “Obviously Reuben still has that ability, he has that fitness and has that ability to turn up at different parts of the field, which is required of one to do these days (from fullback).”

Manly returns to off-season training in mid-November.

Speculation around Luke Brooks leaving for Newcastle refuses to dissipate despite constant denials by Wests Tigers management.

At least there are rumours that the club is trying to do something.
I've been getting nervous that nothing was happening at all.

One thing in our favour is that Tolu Koula is a very capable backup fullback in his own right so it's not as if Manly are without replacements for the inevitable Turbo breakdown after round 3 next season.

If there is any cap pressure at Manly Garrick could definitely become a convenient option for Manly to let go despite him still being a very good winger, I definitely don't think they'd want him gone but if a situation necessitates it the option is there.

In the interests of not treading water, or going backwards, I hope we get both.

Joey reckons he can do something with Brooks so time to deliver.

I'm worried that Brooks and Ponga give us two halves that play predominantly on the left. Someone will have to change there. I actually like what Gamble brings to the table and he is a right sided player. Hope it all works out.

I liked the look of Mapa, in the centers. We have an upcoming star on the wing in Dom, at least for next year. Hopefully Best can get back to good form. I feel like the plays with him running back up the inside were nullifying his effectiveness. The halves weren't giving him ball in good space. He needs to get better defensively.

Keep Gagai well away from centers. Put him on the wing. We have a good forward pack I think. The Safs brothers need to find there form. I think Elliot similar to Barney but with better ball skills. Be good to see Fitzgibon hit good form again. Injuries have hampered him. I like Leo Thompson. I can really see him go another level next year.

So if we can get Brooks and Garrick who's knows. Hopefully more luck with less injuries. Ponga needs almost a full year. He could light up the comp in 5/8 I hope.

Agree with all this but I think Fitzgibbons time in the NRL is up, it’s time he heads over to England.
