2022 team

Andrew 'Joey' Johns
I have Randall ahead of Mann for the 14

Depends what you look for in a 14,
Mañn a guy who defends like a peanut and when he gets the ball runs side ways and dies with it.
Or Randall a guy who gives his all makes the most tackles doesn't miss any and has some ball playing ability.

I agree Randall has potential, Mann is a train wreck at present.

The team looks pretty settled.
At his stage I only see Gagai coming in for Mann at centre and Mann going to the bench.
A few more buys and a pre season could change all that..
Young could have a great off season and push Hunt or Tuala out.
Randall could claim the 14 if he trains the house down, now that he is fulltime and earning enough money to live well.
Momo, Saulo and Jones will keep Fitz honest in the contest for the 17 jersey.
If we buy a quality second rower, we might even see Barnett move to the middle and Sue struggle to make the 17.
Best and Sasagi might end up fighting for the same jersey. Best will need to pick up his form to keep it.

In short, I think I could name the round 1 side now, but 4 or 5 guys might force their way in with a good off season.

Assuming no injuries, here’s how much of the round 1 2022 side I think you can predict with absolute certainty right now:

1. Ponga
2.
3. Gagai
4. Best
5. Hunt
6. Clifford
7. Pearce

13. Barnett
12.
11. Frizell
10. D Saifiti
9. Brailey
8. J Saifiti

14. Mann
15. Klemmer
16.
17.

Maybe flip a coin on whether Barney plays edge or middle, depends on who we might pick up over the off season.

Whatever the 2022 side looks like. The playing style we adopt has to look more like the game today against the Broncos.

We simply cannot stick to being the drab football team we have been and expect to win the premiership. And we can't afford to waste 99% of the season before the squad is given the directive to throw it around.

From the get go, we need to be moving the ball around in attack. That is the way forward and the only way this team is going to spark in attack and reach it's potential.

So pretty much what your saying is we need to play the Newcastle way. Not this garbage style we have seen for say the last 6ish years.

I think part of the problem is we have too many fringe players and they are playing safe, good enough to keep getting picked but not enough to stuff up and get dropped. They include some younger ones fighting for a regular spot and a longer term contract. If you ran a line through the team as to who would make the top six sides at this time we don’t have a lot. If we put all of our top 17 on the market not many would create interest from the top 6,:sure Ponga, maybe Best, Clifford but only of late, Watson already gone, Frizell maybe, DanS yes definately, Brailey the same, Klem, JSaf maybe, done. That’s 7 or 8 the rest are good players lacking that something that makes them top notch.
Ponga has become more involved in attack but his overall game is suffering, Best seems concerned with setting up Tuala which has had success but forgotten about scoring himself. Clifford is playing well but needs a very good Pearce but that might be gone, Pearce is showing sign of age, Watson gone, Frizell is strong but you can’t set the platform from 2nd row, DanS top notch player in any side past 12+months, Brailey is very good, would be even better with a more dynamic attack. Klem style is almost gone will be ok depending on side around him and JSaf might be short of his brother but still very good.

Unsure what your trying to get at. You've pretty much named our forward pack who has been the pivotal point of us actually winning games. It's our attacking structure and or lack thereof which is the point of difference not actually working for us. Sometimes guys need to back themselves and other times they need to be selfless. Very fine line between the both.

The point I was trying to make was that a number of our current auto selections are walking the type rope due to lacking ability, confidence to push the boundaries, playing for a contract that will allow them to play more freely. This reduces both our attack and defence due to playing it safe.
We need 2 or 3 players introduced to the squad to bring the standard up which in turn allows those play it safe types to then release themselves to play a more expansive game. This will mean losing 2-3 players that we consider auto selections, those include Tuala, Mann, possibly Pearce, Barnett, Klem, Jones, Fitz without including young up and coming types

Yeah so pretty much wanting them to throw that pass etc. Chance the play rather then play the safe option.

I don't really see it as the Newcastle way. It's the Andrew Johns era way.
When we first started it became bruise the opposition, they knew they visited Newcastle, through the 90s we moulded ourselves into a lot more attack because we had young guys who wanted to revolutionise the game which we did successfully, also keeping that steely side. As the game progresses it became a grind and doing the little things right as the game screwed down on the rules and what it has become today is a farce of what the game was created to be.

Teams who have kept a core of men have adapted to the new rules, it's become a more eyes up style, quick through the ruck but then chancing your arm. All of which we have failed as a club to adapt too. It's hard to coach guys to just be there in the moment because they've been in this structured way of playing and it's like trying to quit from smoking. They really just want to play but that thought of doing something wrong and getting on the back foot deters them. A smoker wants to quit but thinking of the stress makes them light up "just one more".

Yes, the 90's, which can be called the Andrew Johns Era. Of course he played in to the 2000's also, but his arrival is what changed the teams playing style and fortunes.

Are we going to be re-signing Lee or is he gone for sure?

If he gets over his injuries, and if we don't find anyone better, we might throw him a bone.

I wouldn't go anywhere near him. People blow up about Watson being made of glass but he'll end up playing about two thirds of his possible games here. Lee is at about one third.

If he can get himself right and we get him cheap I think it would be fantastic.

We haven't been a threat at all in the air, with Lee last year he was getting up and batting the balls back using his height as an advantage.

If we don’t find a better outside back and if he is fit.

Edrick will turn 29 this month, so if he can overcome his foot injury, he still has a few years left in his playing career.

I think the problem with our attack is the coaching or lack thereof, AOB has said on a few occasions we focus heavily on defence and seems to indicate we don't do a lot on attack.. it hasn't helped we got Clifford half way through the season and Ponga was injured and we had Hoy in the spot all off season.

I dont expect much out of this final series on current from yes we scraped out a bit of a win streak on bottom placed teams, we need to learn how to attack in the off season and if we start off 2022 with the same clueless attack questions need to be asked of the coaching staff.

Yes defence wins games but a lot of the top sides have good defence but who is going to win games the teams that are threatening multiple times a set across the park stretching the defensive line and building pressure or the Knights who 1 out ruck it until we get to the opposition 20 and then put on a hand full of predictable plays on theb5th that you can see coming a mile away.. the only times we seem to score against the top sides is an unbeatable pass from Ponga. One of the sides is going to have a lot more energy for defence.

Did someone say my name?

Shadow players

Fullback - Bailey Hodgson - very different player to Ponga - reminds me of Robbie O with his high workrate, enthusiasm and surprising strength in a tackle.

Right wing - Star Toa - He has had a good year of development. He'll come in if needed and do the job. He has some things to work on in the off season, but he's basically firstgrade ready.

Right centre - Simi Sasagi - He has lots to work on in the off season, but he really looked dangerous yesterday.
Left centre - Don't know who we have to cover this position. I suspect we'll have to move Hunt or Tuala to cover if Best is out.

Left wing - Young might even grab the spot from Tuala if he has as good an off season as last year - he is on a steep learning curve.

5/8 - Mann is our cover unless we keep Crossland

Halfback - Clune is cover for Pearce

Hooker - Randall and Black are both great options IMO.

Lock - Leo Thompson - All his stats say he is a Cam Murray style middle forward. He joined Canberra as a centre this year and they moved him to prop/lock. In 12 games he has 26 tackle breaks, 2 line breaks and is making 24 tackles a game at 94% efficiency. Toohey describes him as a small, mobile middle forward with a good step at the line and says Canberra were very keen to keep him.

Prop - Jirah, Pasami, Matt Croker, Dan Ticehurst, Jaron Purcell - I'll be happy with any of them next year.

Second row - Brodie and Fitz are both shadow players for Friz, the new signing (whoever that will be) and Barnett.
