2022 Season

Southwell didn't get a run in the first game.
Very clinical display by Australia - 38-0 win.

Jesse Southwell got 4 minutes in Australia's 50-0 win over Scotland.
She scored a try where she got the ball about 10 metres out from the line and pretty much ploughed through 3 feeble defenders and reached out to score. She converted her own try so 1 try, 1 goal, 7 points in 4 minutes.

Australia lost - I think the score was 19-12 to Fiji in the end.
Southwell kicked a goal and did a kickoff that went out on the full, but there were 5 or 6 errors that cost Australia the game - they would have won without the errors.
Aus and Fiji both go through to the finals.

Australia beat NZ 17-12 in the semi final.
Jesse Southwell was on the bench but didn't get a run.
The gold medal match is between Aus and Fiji.
We lost the group match against Fiji by 1 try and had a horror run of errors in that game.

Can we just fast forward to the start of the NRLW?
20 days till kickoff.
Jesse Southwell finishes at the games from 5.38 tomorrow morning and comes home with either gold or silver medal, and has about 2 weeks to train with the side. We won't need to get her fit. She'll probably never be fitter than she is now.

Easy win for Australia in the gold medal match.
Fiji made all the errors this time around.
Jesse Southwell ran out with 30 seconds to go but got a few minutes time because Fiji stayed alive with the ball.
The commentators didn't call her once in the game despite her making about 6 tackles - calling her "the defender".
Anyway, she got about 7 minutes on the field, 1 try, 2 goals and a gold medal for the tournament.

Article/interview on Caitlin Moran's time away and return to rugby league. Was a shock to see we signed her because I'd pretty much forgotten she existed, but she was the Jillaroos halfback and one of the best players in the game when she got injured. Still only 25, could be a masterstroke of a signing if she's healthy and in a good head space, which she seems to be.

Nice to see one good news story associated with the Knights 😂

Jesse Southwell gets the last roster spot. Stiff competition in the halves and fullback but I'll be surprised if she's not in the 17 somewhere.

Yeah she’s got a pretty strong, solid build like her sister, I reckon there’s a fair chance she’ll start as the bench utility.

So they don’t have the entire roster up on the Knights website, but if I’m not mistaken, 7/24 players we have are either identified as outside backs, or centre/winger is the only position they’ve played in NRLW, NSW/Q Cup, or women’s rugby, even if they’re listed as a fullback etc. And it’s 8/24 if you add Autumn-Rain, who’s listed as a five-eighth but plays on the wing a lot.

Whereas there are 6 players identified as middle forwards - prop or lock.

I know you have to make some hard choices in a smaller 24 man squad, but it seems like they weren’t really sure who’d play 2-5 so they’ve taken some throws at the stumps, and used some slots which could have been spent on one more “break glass in case of emergency” prop. The overall balance looks a little off IMO and there could be a little bit of drama if there’s an injury or two in the forwards.

However, much better spine depth than the men’s team, so that’s good 😂

I don’t know how much women’s rugby is like men’s, but I know lots of players who play in the back row in men’s rugby league would be outside backs in union, maybe they’re backing some of the rugby pickups to be able to fill in as bench forwards if need be?

I’m so clueless about the player’s in women’s rugby league, really looking forward to this season though. Seems like we’ve got a pretty decent side and might actually see some success at the Knights! Looking forward to getting a bit more educated on who’s who.

Shall we do a thread for each match?

Yeah I’ll be watching closely and so will some others I think.

Did not expect much from the inaugural team as there was an aspect of them just taking whoever they could get aside from Caitlin Johnston… who got injured in the first game. Kirra Dibb was a very late addition and didn’t really get a proper run to begin with, might have been short on fitness.

This time around you could argue we’ve got the two best players in the women’s game in Boyle and Upton, with a handful of other top 10-20 women’s players in the core of the side as well. The starting pack should be the best in the comp. It’s hard not to have high expectations and I’m keen as mustard to see how they go.

Also we gutted the Broncos and Roosters to get our team together, when will that ever happen again? Schadenfreude to the max.
