2022 Mathews and Ball

Mathews and Ball will be live streamed this weekend.
Ball plays Penrith and it looks like it's a game to see who finishes 2nd and who finishes 3rd - either way they play each other again the next week in the first finals game.
Mathews need to win to have any chance of sneaking into the 8.
Mathews broadcast starts at 12'30 tomorrow and Ball starts at 2 PM.

The full list of games on NSWRL TV are:

Saturday 9 April

Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup R9:
Newcastle Knights v Penrith Panthers, Maitland Sports Ground, 11am

Harold Matthews Cup R9: Knights v Panthers, Maitland Sports Ground 12.30pm

SG Ball Cup R9: Knights v Panthers, Maitland Sports Ground 2pm

Knights finish second in Ball behind the unbeaten Roosters.
The funny way Ball can work sometimes - the Roosters got wins over the teams that finished 15th, 14th, 13th, 12th, 11th, 10th and 8th - not one side in the top 6.
We had tough games against Penrith and Canterbury, who will both beat the Roosters if they come up against them in the knockout final.

How old is Sharpe? Seems like he's just landed in the team, hadn't heard of him before last week
He played 1 game of Mathews last year, so 18 I suppose.
He must have impressed them somehow because Fletcher Myers left the club because he wanted to play fullback - and Myers was pretty much our gun back not long ago and is playing Flegg in Sydney now I think because we went with Sharpe at fullback.

I was at the game today and very impressed by the teams performance. The game pretty much went with possession and the boys fought back well after the Panthers scored 3 tries in the 10 minute periods either side of half-time and took a 18-14 lead. The Panthers scored 4 tries and 3 of these were from kicks. Our defence was very good against a quality team.

Even though Chris Vea’ila only played the first half he looked the class player. Miles Martin also only played the first half and looks a good player with a big motor.

The length of field try scored by Luke Sharpe was impressive and showed blistering speed to run around the Panther’s defence from 15 metres out from his own line and then easily burn the full-back in a sprint down the touch line.

It's interesting to speculate on how many of the Ball side will go into the Flegg side after the season.
In a "normal" year you generally see 3 or 4 go up from Ball to Flegg, but I'd say most of our forward pack is ready now, and Vea'ila, Henderson and maybe Sutton.
The guys who played Mathews last year - Sharpe, Ferguson, Petersen, Blackman, Moodie - are probably too young - But guys like Bradbury, Bryan, Martin, Naigaolivia, Keeley all look good to go.

We play Penrith in the grandfinal qualifier in Ball.
Sounds simple since we beat them easily 2 weeks ago, but if the last 10 years have taught us anything, it's that Penrith sides grow an extra leg in finals games.
I don't know what they do, but they come out breathing fire in finals games and knock us out nearly every time.
Hopefully, Garth Brennan knows exactly what they do, since he probably started it.

Article from the Penrith site. They don't even seem to be considering the chance of losing, despite being underdogs on form.
They really have a winning culture going down there.

I have no doubt we have the better side, but it really feels like an ambush now - massive bustrip down to Jubilee, playing under lights in the rain against a fired up Penrith side. I hope Brennan has a trick or two to fire them up for this game, or they'll be another Knights junior side that's fallen to Penrith in the finals after dominating them all season. I'm sick of that story.

Roosters had a big win in the first Ball semi over Canterbury. I thought Canterbury would win that one.
