2022 Knights Recruitment & Retention Thread

I’ve seen it suggested that a lot of their forwards are on crazy money, and there’s back-ended deals involved, that’s why they ran into cap troubles. Like you’d imagine Cook, Murray, Walker and Mitchell all being on big money, and it makes sense to pay up for those guys, but allegedly they’ve got Tom Burgess & Jai Arrow both on a number that would shock you, somewhere in the $800K region, Liam Knight on half a mil, and then they’ve had to try and find money to keep guys like Koloamatangi too. That’s how they found themselves in this position where they needed to shed something like $2 million from the cap for 2022 and then more in future seasons.

I know Wayne Bennett really really pushed hard for them to get Arrow but I’m not sure how much say he’d have about actual cap management stuff. Like he can say what he wants from them but it’s not like he held a gun to their head. I think it’s likely Reynolds is still there if they never sign Arrow though.

It does seem like they went all in on what they saw as a premiership window and when you’re a missed conversion away from forcing extra time, can’t say it was a horrible call IMO. Winning would have vindicated everything.

Profile for Brock Gardner has been added to our reserve grade list.
The above article from last year lists him as one of the 20 stars for 2021 on the NSWRL site.
He was pretty much considered to be our top junior till he was poached by South Sydney in 2019 and he had huge wraps on him at South Sydney, earning a top 30 contract for 2021.
You can see in the photo on the article that he is in a moon boot, and he failed to get on the field in 2021, so souths cut him.
He got a train and trial deal at Canberra and they have apparently not taken him up.
He played a trial game for Lakes last week and went well from all reports.
This week he is listed as 18th man for our reserve grade side.

He seems like an ideal player for the new rules. He is a smallish lock/second rower who has a massive workload in the forwards - described by me in posts I did when he played in our juniors as an everyready bunny because he seemed to be in everything and never stopped working.
He might have lost some speed and fitness due to his achilles injury, but if he gets it all back he should push for firstgrade this year.
 
Would love if Knights were in the Hunt for Herbie Farnsworth, Broncos sucked last year but Herbie was really really good. I think he'd be an elite fullback

Interesting that the Raiders and the Knights have both listed Brock Gardner in their reserve grade squads.
I'd assume from that that he did enough to earn a second tier contract at the Raiders but decided to return home instead.
 
Thoughts on Euan Aitken for a 2nd row spot? Sounds like he’s staying in Oz due to personal reasons, so I’m sure those reasons will also factor into his choice of next club. If he’s keen though, I’d happily take him.

There are big holes in his game. He is mature age now and hasn't improved in years. We're way beyond those types of prospects
