2022 Knights Recruitment & Retention Thread

Makes sense why Toohey suggested we might be after a young an upcoming backrower.
Let's hope he is the goods.

Surely there must be some cap space still left over.

Ponga,
This makes it sound like the player options are only in his favour if the Knights win a comp.

"The problem with the Dolphins recruiting Ponga - in addition to being somewhat injury prone - is his complex deal (worth $4.4m) at the Knights.

The 23-year-old has player options in his favour in 2023 and 2024 but only if he wins a premiership at the club in 2022."

This is a very weird contract that no one seems to understand.

I have said it before, this is the only thing that makes sense, otherwise I don't see why we would have extended him with all those PO's.

Ponga's contract was designed by himself and his father.
Clearly, they decided that if he won a premiership, his work here is done and he might want a new challenge.
It's very unusual, but it makes sense if you follow what Ponga has always said about wanting a challenge.

I guess the thinking is we gave him a big deal … if he wins a premiership then it shows he’s worth it to both parties, and he can enable the option to keep getting that salary. If not then we are free to renegotiate and it might come down.

17th team does throw a spanner in the works, but if not for that then maybe it would have been a decent idea, and might still be … since that article is questioning if he’s worth what we pay, and pointing out his injury troubles.

former Knights junior Jamayne Taunoa-Brown has been released by the Warriors to take up a deal with an un named NRL club.

It would be nice if Melbourne gave him a go.
He is one of the very few Melbourne born and bred players to make the NRL. His father is the head man at the most successful Melbourne junior club - can't remember the name of it.

Good luck to him.
He isn't the most talented player but got there with pure hard work.
I thought he went pretty well for the Warriors.

Great news on the Ponga PO if that last article is correct. Knights hold all the power still as of now so looks like the new club can’t contact him as soon as November 1st comes around.

Seems a weird one to release, JTB. What would he have been costing the Warriors? Not much surely. Knowing Browny he’ll soon be replaced with someone older, more expensive and worse.
