2021 Rugby League World Cup (2022)

I think there are more pressing priorities right now such as the 10’s of thousands of COVID-19 cases the UK currently have.
Your getting the cases regardless. It's not as if they will be going anywhere anytime soon. It's more of a thing about getting people vaxxed and "protected" enough to move on with some sort of "normal" lifestyle. It'll become the norm to get the covid "flu". Will be very interesting too see how it plays out over say the next decade. A lot of broke people and businesses I'm sure. I'll be in that category......:(

Interesting Dan we have not heard anything from the Oracle of the North how Covid is all a Government hoax poromoted by the media.

Covid is very much a disease that can be wiped out with vaccines.
Flu can't, because all the vaccines they have developed only work against a specific strain of flu, and as soon as it mutates the vaccine is useless.
The covid vaccines all work against these "spike" proteins that are common to all strains of covid, so once we reach "herd immunity", by either most of us being vaccinated or having had it and developing natural immunity, it should just go.
Covid is as infectious as chicken pox or german measles - both things that virtually everyone got before they developed an effective vaccine - and both things almost no one gets now - but as they said when I was studying 40 years ago, you need 90% plus vaccination rates to get herd immunity.

Thanks Doc

I thought a feed about the upcoming Rugby League World Cup was overdue due to be set up, plenty to talk about in the lead up...

Pool A:
- England
- Samoa
- France
- Greece

Pool B:
- Australia
- Fiji
- Scotland
- Italy

Pool C:
- New Zealand
- Lebanon
- Jamaica
- Ireland

Pool D:
- Tonga
- Papau New Guinea
- Wales
- Cook Islands

Was planning to head over for this when it was 2021 and before covid ... oh well! It does seem like it could be really open, the lack of prep might being Australia back to the field a bit, and England will be strong at home. I do feel like any of those top four could take it out!

Bradman Best says he's keen to play for Wales on the strength of having a Welsh born grandmother.

Following on from some recent RLWC mentions thought I might start to compile a list of those at the club who could/should feature in the WC.

Australia:
Ponga - highly unlikely to make the cut, only have him here because Mal seems to like him so may be an outside chance
Klemmer - Australia loses some middle depth from the Origin stocks with players electing to play for othe nations, technically an incumbent but would have to be considered very much an outside chance relying on a few more defections.

Wales:
Best - Tooheys recent column suggests he's turned this down so looks like he won't be suiting up.
Frizell - Would be a walk-up starter if he chooses, would be his third consecutive WC so will be interesting to see if he wants to play.

Fiji:
DSaf - Already indicated he will rule himself out.
JSaf - Would be a starter if he makes himself eligible, was fairly consistent in playing for Fiji early in his career but hasn't since 2017.
Kurt Donoghue - Flegg five-eighth named in their initial 50-man squad, Fiji are somewhat short on halves but it's hard to see him getting a start in the squad.

England:
Young: Toohey column and AOB comments seem to suggest he will be picked in the England squad, will have to make a decision between a guaranteed 3 pool games for Jamaica v a chance to cement himself in the side for England. Hasn't really indicated which way he will go but a chance to establish himself for England this early in his career may be a compelling prospect.
KPP: An outside chance of becoming a squad player, I don't love his chances but stranger things have happened and it would be good to see him run out at that level.

Italy:
Jack Johns: Played for them in the 2017 WC, would be in the side alongside his brother if he makes himself available.

Jamaica:
Young - as above, would be a nice bit of trivia to have the first Jamaican international in the NRL to play in our side.

Scotland
Klemmer? - Remember seeing an article about them contacting him to play in the WC but haven't seen anything confirming or quantifying his eligibility since.

Samoa:
Tuala - Too many top-tier outside backs for him to get a look in for the extended squad IMO.
Hunt - Same as Tuala
Sasagi - Utilities/Ball-playing locks (if that's what he is now) in somewhat shorter supply for Samoa but again too far away from genuine consideration as it stands

Looking like it’s going to be a very thin bunch of Knights representation which is sort of sad. I remember 2008 and 2013 we had a few players in various Pacific teams at least.

Can’t say many of our players have made a case for selection this season though.

Btw 2017 I’ve blocked all details from my memory. I know I went to the Kiwis Fiji quarter final, but couldn’t even tell you the result 😬

Hahahah mate I can't blame you for blocking that out, I reckon your mob will be looking a lot better this time around though and the likely NZ v Fiji QF this year should be a bit more memorable.

Good to hear Joey Manu got some positivenews re his calf injury, would've been immensely dissapointing to see him miss the WC.

Depending on how much impact no matches for Australia since 2019 has, I can see all four top sides challenging, so it should be great! England always lift in England with their super vocal home support, Tonga will be better than mid-year with players returning, and NZ often aren’t quite as good in England for some reason.

Of course Aus could always click like they’ve been playing regularly and blitz everyone, but hopefully not.

NZ have that advantage of a side which basically picks itself & really great top line talent even if the depth isn’t quite what Australia has.

You just know Australia won’t even pick close to the best possible lineup.

Article on Dom Young now wanting to play for England.
He says it is a hard decision because he'd like to play with his brother, but says he has had positive talks with Shaun Wane (England Coach) and is hopeful he'll be picked for England. He goes on to say he was born in England, so he's English.

He doesn't say he'd probably have to pay his own way to England to play for Jamacia and that England will pay his way and give him a big wad of cash, but that would be my first consideration. In the words of 10 cc, "Art for art's sake, money for god's sake".
