2017/2018 Knights Player signing speculation

Been on holidays for a couple of weeks. Not a lot has changed, plenty of excitement but nothing to show for it.
We seem to be the new Roosters, every registered player is linked to us... only thing is, Roosters actually sign players up

Oh for god's sake.....we finally get a coach who wants to be here and he's made all the tough calls, we're only a bit over a year into our rebuild...and half you impatient dills want to sack the coach???? Sack Brown and we're back to where we were 2yrs ago...have some patience, immediate gratification, won't bring long term results.:)

Very well said Tasgirl!

The last thing we should be doing now is changing our coach!

Lets be real with the situation at hand though mate, last year he inherited a team half full of blokes who weren't interested in the result and throughout the year he allowed them to leave. In the process giving debuts to about 12 or so blokes way before they were nearly ready. It made some of them and totally ruined a few. But a spoon last year was nothing but a certainty and everyone knew that. Also coming into last year we had no wiggle room in regards to mid season signings whereas this year we can possibly snare 3 quality players off their respective clubs before the deadline in June. Also throughout his first year brown picked out a diamond in the rough in mitch barnett who i believe has representative football in his future. So all in all he got a massive A+ for the year of 2016

This year so far on field he has turned us from whipping boys into a tough match up no matter our opposition. Hes landed us the best young talent in the game in kalyn ponga, aswell as switching a beat up worn down 500k winger for a tough hard working leader in buhrer. Weve been in the hunt for quality talent by the likes of finucane, scott and bird and most likely had scott if he didn't succumb to a torn acl and had us pull our offer. We haven't landed any big fish just yet but just being in the market to do so is something we haven't been able to do for a long long time. We are currently a healthy halfback away from being maybe 3 wins and 4 losses instead of 1 win and 6 losses. So far on 2017 brown gets another A+ for mine.

Everyone needs to realise the situation brown got himself into by accepting the job as our coach. Hes not dumb enough to ruin his coaching career by not explaining the process and what must be done to avoid the same rebuild happening in 3 years under a new coach. This process doesn't happen in 2 or 3 years it'll take plenty of time and i cannot see brown being sacked anytime in the near future. To be honest if i was the board id be organsing the bloke an extension. Because weve needed this done for quite some time!
I agree with most of this. I'm not saying I want Brown gone but if we can't land a quality half we're destined for absolute mediocrity for the next 18 months until we can boot Hodkinson.

If that happens and we get 3 spoons no way he gets extended.
Brown has done a good job getting rid of the deadwood and making astute signings like Barnett, Buhrer and Sio. He'll, even Elliot is starting to grow on me. But the fact is we went from 8 wins in 2015 to 1 win last year. I couldn't give him an A+ for last year, sure getting rid of the overpaid underperformers was right but he made plenty of mistakes with his team selections and letting Tapine go at the beginning of the year was wrong too. We had a poor and inexperienced squad last year but 1 win was pathetic and well below par even with the side we had.

Sadly we won't get many more this year even though the performances have greatly improved and Brown deserves a lot of credit particularly with the defensive improvements.

The good has outweighed the bad so far and I personally believe that he's been the right man for the job, but next year is make or break we need a quality playmaker or we're in serious trouble and football being the business it is means Brown won't survive if we don't start getting results.

I absolutely agree with what's being said about getting that 1 big star pick up will lead to several more quality signings but it's up in the air whether we can get the big one.

We deserve a successful side because of the amazing loyalty of our fan base and the town's passion for Rugby League, but the the way things work in the NRL favours certain sides and it'll be no easy task to become competitive. But hopefully Brown, Mooney and co are up to it.

I've been critical of Brown plenty of times but while the players appear to be "playing for him" then he's entitled to see it through.

NRL 2017: Ben Ikin says Newcastle should target Bulldogs skipper James Graham to lead club rebuild

HAVING recently missed out on several marquee signings, Ben Ikin has identified the man Newcastle should make their priority recruitment target.

In need of an experienced forward to lead and aid the development of their young pack, Ikin told the Market Watch podcast that Nathan Brown should put all his energy into pursuing Canterbury enforcer James Graham.

Speculation has been rife for weeks that Graham could be forced out of Belmore as the club chases Test and Origin prop Aaron Woods.

While the skipper is under contract with the Dogs until the end of 2018 and on a deal reportedly worth $700,000 a season, the Englishman would not only provide the Knights with experience but the mongrel their pack needs.

With the club unable to lure Matt Scott to the Hunter for a tour which subsequently saw him re-sign with North Queensland, Ikin believes the pitch for Graham is a simple one.

“I would go to James Graham and say ‘we want to send you into retirement a lot wealthier than if you were to stay at the Dogs’,” Ikin said.

“There’s some really good young forwards (at the Knights) like the Saifiti brothers (Daniel and Jacob) who need a passionate, older, more experienced head with a hard edge and he’s got it.

“He’s professional, intelligent, he plays every game like it’s his last and if you put him into that system, he’d be the player who could bring the younger players on and I’m assuming that’s what Nathan Brown saw in Matt Scott.

“James Graham has one more year on his contract at the Dogs. If there’s even an inkling that Graham might leave, Nathan Brown should jump in his car and get to Belmore and throw a three-year-deal his way.”

Des Hasler has publicly stated Graham is a part of the club’s future and would not be squeezed out of Belmore but that doesn’t mean the Knights can’t at least make an inquiry.

Grahams turns 32 in September, meaning one last lucrative deal may need to be struck now before he misses the boat.

But Knights fans needn’t stress.

The inability to secure several recruitment targets has not deterred Brown from luring a couple of “high-profile forwards” as he works on rebuilding the club.

Having tabled offers to Matt Prior and Jack Bird, along with making overtures to Scott and Dale Finucane, Brown remains confident of nabbing an elusive big name.

“We would like to think we have the capability of attracting two high-profile forwards in to help the young guys,” Brown told On The Couch with Sterlo.

“If we get one we can get three or four but getting one would appear to be the hardest.”

At present, the Knights have expressed an interest in Warriors prop Ben Matulino but the Test star is also being pursued by Ivan Cleary’s Wests Tigers.

While they snared their fullback for 2018 early by landing Kalyn Ponga’s signature, the recruitment drive has stalled since the season got underway.

But the public only needs look to Canberra back in 2014 for inspiration.

The Raiders are proof that there’s light at the end of the tunnel and while it seems like a distant dream, in actuality they’re only a few deals away from living that reality.

“I remember the Raiders under Ricky Stuart being in a similar position to the Knights,” Ikin explained.

“They went to market and went hard at Mick Ennis, Kevin Proctor, James Tedesco and Josh Mansour; some even back flipped on deals they’d done down there.

“But eventually if you’re aggressive enough and keep selling your club for the right reasons, you’ll attract the right players.

“That’s definitely been the case for Canberra and I can see that being the case for the Knights.

“While they’ve missed out on a couple — if they keep throwing the money they’ve got at the right players — eventually someone will bite.”

Really?
U think we're a mess... there gonna be farrrrrrked by 2018 with no teddy no woods no moses.
Brooks being well brooks

I tell u all right now, Foran if signed with a Sydney club will live on the northen beaches..... say he signs with the sharks
It a 90min drive to training for him 100%
If he signs with the dogs... its a 90min drive again.
Signs with tigers.... at least an hr drive as well.

I live on the northen beaches and i can get to Branxton quicker from home then to parramatta in the moring.
The travel isnt a issue here.
Not discrediting anything you're saying here but why the hell would anyone want to go to Branxton?

I honestly can't see Hodko being part of our playing squad next year.
He seems to be a week to week prospect this year.
I expect them to either give him a medical retirement and pay out his contract, or do what they did with Todd Lowrie and make him part of the coaching squad.

You're not getting from Dee Why to Lambton quicker than to Concord and he can live next door to his kids. Ivan Cleary is a good coach and the Tigers won more than one game last year. Going to need to show Kieran the $$$.

I keep seeing Tolman mentioned and what a great signing he'd be. He's a fair dinkum plodder.

I tell ya what, I'd like to be taking the hit-up after Kasiano has dragged 5 defenders with him.

The big thing is how much Grahams deal is backended.. roughly 400k!!

Yes it would be a bit different taking the hit up after Starling monstered the defence.

Wouldnt be much time difference tbh mate,

U try getting from the north side of the city to the south westen side of the city at 8am.... its ridiculous. From spit bridge through mosman to the bridge can take an hour alone and only 15km

Takes me 90mins to get from Belrose to Branxton which is 140km

He'd be going up Waringah Rd then over Gladesville or Ryde bridges though. I reckon an hour difference tbh.

And again from beacon hill to forrest way then heading towards chatswood is a nightmare as well, then from chatswood down Mowbray rd towards northryde is a complete joke then getting through lanecove over gladesville bridge haha.
