Tom Starling has to have grabbed the coaches attention now. He has had 4 outstanding games in a row to start the season. He made NYC team of the week for the first 3 games, and although he ws only on the field for 30 minutes in reserve grade yesterday, he did some amazing things.

We were well beaten in NYC, and none of the guys made many metres, but Sam McIntyre made more than 40 tackles and is now averaging just under 40 a game, to go with his average of well over 100 metres in attack.

I think he would be much more damaging just running the damn ball instead of backing into the opposition looking for an offload every run. It's getting on my nerves all this soft talk slots so please leave it be.

I agree

He can be effective and soft and the same time. In the same way the Snowden could be slow and yet effective

Woods never puts a big hit on. Like fkn never. Similarly, he rarely hits the ball up like an animal. Everything he does seems to be done with some degree of caution. And that is being interpreted as soft.

So i can admit that i think he is an awesome prop who id love in a knights jumper, while still believing that he is 'soft' for lack of a better word

Wish I had an answer for you 88 but I don't. They just don't make front rowers like they used too. The doggies have them all ballplaying....... Never liked the bromwich boys. Always thought they were grubby.

Id call it a intelligent footballer.....
Highly effective in everything he does without having to show ponny with big hits or reckless running actions like JWH.... whom does half the damage of woods but full of agro.

ben matulino people reckon we could pick him up mid-season still only 28 still got a good few years left. he needs change of clubs.

I would be going hard after charlie gubb too his about 10x the value of starling and can tackle

Sure, Id agree with that. He's being considered the for the Blues captaincy for a reason.

I still think his game would benefit immensely if he was more aggressive. There's really no question about that

Sure there is. What if it led to errors, penalties, and injuries?
When Matt Scott, Jesse Bromwich and other equally effective props do it, does it lead to errors, penalties and injuries? No.

The simple, key question to ask here is: does an increase in a aggression in forwards, generally speaking, lead to a net benefit in results?

I think everyone can agree that the answer is yes

Actually no,

Not only have i proved it but rhugh89 did today also.

Woods is currently the best prop in the world and there isnt a thing aggression can do to change that.

Fyi Bromwich playsvery similar to woods, he isnt a bash and barge player... he has footwork at the line and splits the defenders rather then try to run over them

I think we are all agreeing that we would love Woods here!

Brown needs to fire up the Bbq again.

But we do need an aggressive prop. Someone that does charge the line like a mad nutter. Puts on big hits. Even if they get a suspension a year.

That sort of big effort really lifts teams.

You didnt address anything i wrote you just wrote "actually no"

Whatever man. We can both agree he would do wonders for our team and would love him here

Sorry to continue mate,

But atm Scott is where? Ohh thats right out for the season.

Bromwich since u used him as a example is one of the most penalized players in the game.

JWH is always injured or giving away panalties due to aggression.

Matulino just missed half a yrdue to injury and is also highly penalized as well.

Should we continue?

Tom is coming along nicely and will I'm sure make his way through the grades. We have Levi and Kosty now and those will do a good job for us.

A few years down the track and Kosty will be gone, in time for Starling to come in to 1st grade hopefully.

No wonder we don't require the services of Randell.

Scott wouldnt be anywhere if it weren't for his notorious and unrelenting aggression. Its the only reason he is a rep player. And the guy is a 102kg ex centre who plays well above his weight, so im blown away that he plays more than 10 games a year especially at his age

JWH is another premier forward who would be nowhere without his love of contact. And i would argue that The Roosters Club being fully aware of the array of risks associated with his style of play, and are no less encouraged to resign him longterm on huge money, should answer the question as to whether there is a net benefit to playing with extreme aggression

I understand what you are saying, but it just isnt supported by reality. The reality of the player market shows us that the most aggressive players are often the most expensive, from team to team, decade to decade. Aggression despite its many risks has always been viewed as yielding a net benefit. And proof of this is in the money being paid to players who are aggressive vs players who are not

So if you dont agree with me, that's fine, but understand that i am arguing the case for the decisions being made by the money yielding experts who run the rosters at the clubs. And you are saying precisely the opposite, that they're wrong

Be careful not to fall down the trap of making an argument against aggression. That you will not win. But if you are trying to say somwthing different and you just delivered it poorly im happy to hear you out
