I'll talk about the elephant in the room.
Melbourne let him go because he had a chronic back injury.
There was a lot of doubt if he'd ever get on the field for us and he was on a tiny contract because of his back issues.
He has continued to have back issues, and last year had to have major surgery to try to fix it.
He is offered less money because we don't know if he is good for 2 years or 2 games.
He is backing himself to prove his fitness and earn a bigger contract, and good luck to him.

I think he has finished his engineering qualification in the mining industry, or is close to finishing it - so he can earn good money if football doesn't work out for him.

Third parties help a lot their thou, manly will not be taking as big of a gamble under the cap. I hope we retain him but with several young backrowers coming through we should not take a reckless gamble on an injury prone player. The eels seems to have a thing for signing injury prone back rowers with scott and watmough already at the club.
 
I think it's pretty clear we're going to lose Rochow, as disappointing as that is. Hagan, Stone and whoever else have just completely f***ed out salary cap right up. We're in a much worse situation money wise for 2017 than we were for this season because of ridiculous contract upgrades and poor cap management and how they even managed to make it this way is beyond me.

There were reports of his pending retirement but Anthony told channel 9 news:

“I have unfinished business in rugby league. I have not retired,”

“I’m hoping to return in a couple of weeks, but we’ll see how it responds.”

That being said with his knee being that bad retirement is still very much on the cards
 
Robbie was worth the cheap contract we got him for, and has not improved injury wise. Let the silvertails throw their money away on a gamble, not us.
 
If his back is improved after his operation there is no reason he shouldn't be offered a good contract.
I think we just wait and see how he goes for a few months.
 
With the way our cap is and with the youngsters coming through I'd rather ensure we keep the Safiti's then throw money at Rochow personally.
 
Spot on Lord of the Scaleybugs. 2013 was a l-o-o-o-n-g time ago footie speak. The guy reminds me of Daniel Abrahams, Milton Thaiday and David Seage with his injury run alas.
 
I'd 100% rather keep the Saifitis than pay overs for Rochow. Seriously I don't know where this myth is coming from that Rochow is some sort of star forward that we should go to any lengths to re-sign. I just mustn't be paying enough attention to him when he plays because imo he's a good forward but quite replaceable.
 
The problem is Junior it is that long since the guy has been fully fit who knows how he will return and if the back injury keeps coming back.

Sums it, he'd be nice to keep thats for sure but not going to loose sleep if someone swoops in with a massive offer.

Just hope he gives a 100% for the rest of the year if he leaves.

Big call! Even if it does take 3 years we've got them for another 10 years atleast while Rochow will be good for another 2-3 with his back if that?
 
If Rochow can prove himself fit he is worth a decent contract.
We went through the same thing with Taia. He had a serious neck injury that no one knew if the radical operation he had would fix, but it turns out he was fine.

I think Rochow is doing the right thing by not signing till he proves he is fit, and can then get the money he is worth as a player.

Part of his deal to sign for us was a traineeship in the mining industry and he put a lot of effort into working on that, probably because he knew his football career may not be a long one, so he has a very good plan B if his back doesn't come good.
