2014 NSW Cup Thread

If we didn't have Mamo to give opportunities to when injuries occur i'd definitely have a punt on Koroibete.

Looks like we've signed another Goanna in Noel Underwood who apparently played in that Goannas trial.

Minto has to do something quick otherwise he's going to be out of contract next year. Haven't seen him play a good game since pre-season against an unprofessional team & i heard he had a good game in Round 1. Which is surprising because wasn't only last year he won the QLD Cup GF?

If Minto hasn't dropped off alarmingly since last season then I really can't see what Bennett ever saw in him, he's been pretty poor this season. Can't believe he ever made first grade!

Pretty disappointing game, but we just don't have the players this year. Sad to see after a few strong seasons in the NSW Cup.

Koroibete should have no problems finding a starting spot somewhere, second time this season he's destroyed us!

Well yeah, he must have dropped off, as i said he won a premiership last year! You could make excuses like he's not playing behind a good pack & things like that but overall him & Dobson have been very disappointing the last month or 2 going off NSW Cup form.

Tigers win NSW Cup clash

Sat 7th June, 06:37PM

The NSW Cup Newcastle Knights were defeated 34-12 by the Wests Tigers at Cessnock Sports Ground on Saturday evening.

Inspired by a two tries to Fijian flyer Marika Koroibete, the Tigers proved far too strong for the Knights in an impressive display of slick skills and speed.

The men in red and blue were first to score after 12 minutes, but that was their only joy in the first half as the away side charged to a comfortable 24-6 lead at the break.

Wests’ domination continued in the second half with a further two tries to confirm a comfortable 22-point win.

The defeat leaves the Knights stranded in ninth position after 13 rounds of the NSW VB Cup.

Newcastle made a number of positional changes prior to kick-off.

Marcel Ikinofo replaced Timana Tahu in the centres, while Honeti Tuha came in on the wing for Josh Mantellato.

The Knights had the dream start to the match when lock and captain Tyler Randell pounced on a loss ball in the Tigers’ in-goal area.

Halfback Michael Dobson converted to give the home side an early 6-0 lead.

The Tigers locked the scores at 6-all six minutes later via crafty hooker Joel Luani, who barged over from close range to score.

Luani’s four-pointer then sparked the away side into action, who took the lead 10 minutes later following a try to fullback Kurtis
Rowe.

The Tigers rammed home their ascendancy with two tries to winger Marika Koroibete within the space of eight minutes to go to the break with a commanding 24-6 lead.

Newcastle had their chances in the second half, but poor ball control and execution cost them dearly.

This enabled the Tigers to extend their advantage via a double to veteran centre Keith Lulia.

Nathan Ross snared a try for the Knights in the dying stages, but it meant little in the end as the Tigers charged a comprehensive victory.

Newcastle will look to get their season back on track when they take on the Newton Jets at Henson Park next Saturday from 3.00pm.

Newtown Jets Vs Newcastle Knights

Henson Park, Saturday, June 14
Kick-off: 3.00pm
Referee: Chris Treneman
Broadcast: Radio Coverage courtesy of Steele Sports Radio (Link available viawww.steelesports.com.au)

Summary:

The Newtown Jets have now strung together five straight wins following their 38-16 win over the Bears last weekend.

The Knights on the other hand, have now lost their last six outings following a 34-12 loss to the Tigers.

Amazingly enough, just six weeks ago, the Knights were in second spot on the ladder while the Jets were at the foot of the table. Fast forward to now, and the Jets sit in eighth, some three competition points clear of the Knights in ninth.

Both Kane Evans and Daniel Mortimer have been recalled to the NRL meaning that Kurt Kara will slot back into the halves and Pearn and Verlinden will form the front row.

A number of inclusions for the Knights with Timana Tahu, Chanel Mata’utia and Matt Hilder all named.

These two sides have scarily similar statistics after thirteen rounds, with the Knights the slightly better of the two in attack and the reverse in favour of the Jets in terms of defence.

All things being equal, a close and exciting encounter looks to be on the cards.

Blue Collar-Bags:

One of the things we love about the Jets is that with the exception of a little bit of flare you get from the likes of Taumata at times, they really are just a bunch of blue collar workers.

Players like L’Estrange, Kara, Pearn and and Harris epitomize what this club is all about. No bells, no whistles, no BS, just roll up your sleeves and do what it takes to get the job done.

And you get the feeling that Greg Matterson and co loves it like that!

Prediction:

Momentum is a funny thing in football, you either have it or you don’t.

That seems to be the case here.

Jets by 8.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS v NEWTOWN JETS

Round 14, 2014 VB NSW CUP Premiership
Saturday, June 14 Kick-Off: 3pm
Venue: Henson Park, Sydney

Last Time They Met:

Newcastle recorded a dominant 38-10 victory over Newtown in Round 23 last season, while the Jets proved too good in Round 18 with a 26-14 triumph.

Teams:

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS

Ross, Wiliame, P.Mata'utia, Tahu, C.Mata'utia, Minto, Dobson, Horwood, Waddell, Vaivai, Elias, Randell, Hilder (c). Interchange: Redman, Steele, Underwood, Koopu, Hartin.

NEWTOWN JETS

Reuben, Evans, Moga, Langi, Davis, Kara (c), Taumata, Pearn, L'Estrange, Verlinden, Martin, Harris, Siejka. Interchange: Taukeiaho, Lane, Barrett, Houma, Noble.

Match analysis:

The Newcastle Knights' NSW Cup side hasn't tasted victory for six long weeks but coach Rick Stone is remaining positive in his side's ability to turnaround the season.

While the men in red and blue are down on form, Stone can't fault their effort and he hopes that commitment will hold them in good stead for Saturday's clash against the eighth-placed Jets.

"It’s always a big job at Newtown, especially Henson Park," Stone says.

"They have probably started the season a bit slow, which is probably the reverse to us.

"We started OK, but we’ve been struggling a little bit lately.

"We are a little bit down on personnel and confidence at the moment, but I think most reserve grade sides go through that period.

"That’s particularly the case when the NRL side has a few injuries and that’s certainly the case at the moment.

"But the opposition will be similar, so we’ve got to front up and get ready to do our best."

Helping the Knights' chances of victory will be the return of key outside backs Chanel Mata'utia (ribs) and Timana Tahu (knee).

Stone can't wait to have both players back in the side, especially with their potent attacking skills.

"They are both terrific players and both can change a game in their carries, skill and try-scoring ability," he enthuses.

"So they give us a little bit of trust and an ability to put on some points.

"He was looking to do it last week, but he wasn’t quite ready and had a little abductor strain which kept him out.

"So he’ll get his chance to play his first game for the year this week."

Key match-ups:

Chanel Mata'utia vs Josh Davis

Chanel makes his triumphant return from a three-week layoff due to a rib injury and coach Stone couldn't be happier.

The local South Newcastle junior provides plenty of spark for the Knights' backline, while his raw power always stands out in defence.

Watch for a fit and refreshed Mata'utia to star in his comeback match.

Michael Dobson/Matt Minto vs Arana Taumata/ Kurt Kara

The halves usually cop the brunt of the blame when a team loses and the Knights' NSW Cup side is no different.

Coach Stone is first to admit that his playmakers Dobson and Minto have struggled for fluency in recent weeks, especially playing off the back of a beaten forward pack.

"They do (need to lift) and they need some help from their forwards to create a bit of time and space," Stone concedes.

"They will probably be first to admit they are probably not gelling as a partnership as well as they would like, but they are both talented players and both bring plenty to the footy team.

"We just haven’t seen the best of them yet."

Stone is hoping that best comes on Saturday against the Jets.

Brenton Horwood vs Andrew Pearn

Horwood has been a standout for coach Stone in the NSW Cup ranks this season.

The former premiership-winner at the Maitland Pickers started the year playing off the bench, but gets his chance to impress in the starting front-row against the Jets on Saturday.

"Brenton has been pretty consistent right throughout the year," he beams.

"He has started a couple of games, but mainly started off the bench and his effort has been outstanding week-in and week-out.

"So it’s a good justification and reward for him."

Player to watch:
Noel Underwood

Formally with the Northern Pride in Queensland's Intrust Super Cup, Underwood impressed on debut in the Cup ranks against the Wests Tigers last weekend.

The hard-running forward, who has also played a few games with Central Newcastle in the local competition, is expected to feature prominatley against Newtown on Saturday.

Where it will be won:

Talk to coach Stone and the answer to that question is simple.

"It’s about winning the middle," he says frankly.

"We haven’t done that regularly in the last couple of weeks, so that’s our main focus against Newtown."

If the Knights can follow coach Stone's simplistic instructions and rediscover their dominance through the middle, then they have enough strike on the edges to get the job done away from home.

It sounds like Redman, Dobson and Elias are having big games, and I think Vaivai and Horwood both played 30 minutes before they were replaced and did plenty of work.
We seem to be attacking down the Mantellato wing and getting plenty of chances.

Thanks Billy for the up dates today.
How did Redders go today I seen that he started the game did he play the 80 mins if dont who replace him .Great win Boys

They just did the job. Our halves and backs were scoring at nearly every chance, but at the back end of the game big Verlinden for Newtown was making 15 or 20 metres every run and guys like Hillder, Elias, Redman and Randell had tackled themselves to a standstill to make up for our almost complete lack of props. Vaivai is probably the only prop on a contract.

I think he went the 80 and tackled himself silly, but he got help at dummy half from Hilder and Randell, and at the end of the game Timana was called at dummy half several times.
