The Dragons may have to offload eight players to ease salary cap concerns

ST GEORGE Illawarra are fighting an internal crisis with up to eight players caught up in the club’s salary cap drama.

The Dragons are between $500,000 and $600,000 over their cap for next season with management attempting to offload and restructure the club’s playing roster.

The Daily Telegraph can today reveal the full list of players under the pump at the joint venture club.

Moves to shift players are causing angst in the playing group although club officials have no choice but to be ruthless.

Players are restless but coach Paul McGregor, known to be an uncompromising leader, is determined to implement his own squad.

And McGregor knows the club needs change, having won 43 of 98 games since the 2010 grand final for a modest success rate of just 43.8 per cent.

Recruitment guru Peter Mulholland is currently sifting through the mess.

The Daily Telegraph understands:

• Blues forward Trent Merrin comes off contract after next season and is seeking a better deal with the Roosters expressing interest for 2016.

• Fullback Gerard Beale looks like being off-loaded to Gold Coast Titans.

• Winger Jason Nightingale comes off after next year, his future also uncertain. There has been talk about Super League.

• Centre Dylan Farrell could be moving to Cronulla although he hasn’t found a new club just yet.

• Forward Jack Stockwell looks set to sign with either Manly or Newcastle.

• Star winger Brett Morris is certain to leave and, most probably, sign with Canterbury.

• There is talk prop Dan Hunt has been granted permission to talk with other clubs but he looks set to stay at the club.

• Fullback Adam Quinlan may be looking, with the club’s permission, for another club.

There was talk NSW back Josh Dugan may be asked to take a pay cut through a third party agreement but this has been denied by his management.

Dragons management want to copy Penrith, who cut loose star player Luke Lewis, Lachlan Coote, Michael Jennings and Michael Gordon due to salary cap pressure.

The Panthers have since become competitive again.

One source close to the Dragons said:

“’Mary’ (McGregor) wants his own side. He wants to reshape the roster. And he has no choice. The club is way over the salary cap.”

Mulholland did not return calls on Monday.

The issues at Saints arose when forward Joel Thompson backflipped on a deal to return to Canberra.

The club used that money to sign Benji Marshall midway through last season for about $600,000 a season.

The Dragons will return to training next week.

The TAB has St George Illawarra as a $23 chance to win next year’s title.

Morris all set to escape Dragons' lair

The Dragons have bitten the bullet and will announce that they have released Test star Brett Morris by the end of the week.Expect the flying winger to sign a rich deal with the Bulldogs to play alongside twin brother Josh any day now.

Morris is a fan favourite at the joint venture and a proven match-winner with his try scoring ability.

But the Dragons have an imbalance in their squad with too many outside backs and not enough big, tough forwards.

That proved their undoing last season and the new brains trust of coach Paul McGregor and recruitment manager Peter Mulholland decided someone had to go to make room in the salary cap for more forwards - and Morris will be the sacrificial lamb.

Morris had another fine season with the Dragons, bagging 14 tries in 18 games and playing for NSW at Origin level before being injured.

Only Jason Nightingale scored more tries - and the mail is strong that the Kiwi Test winger is also be shopped around and attracting interest.

Who will the Dragons spend the money they get from selling off Morris and possibly Nightingale?

For starters, former Kiwi Test prop and Warriors bad boy Russell Packer, who is finishing up a jail term for assault.

Where to now for Takairangi?

Talented utility back Brad Takairangi is in limbo since the Tigers pulled out of a deal to sign him.

The Eels came close to picking up the Titans centre/back-rower - but have salary cap problems.

At this stage, it looks like Takairangi may return to the Titans for 2015.

The Panthers must have liked our 2012 NSW Cup side, Ethan Cook, Sam Anderson, Wes Naiqama, Kyle O'Donnell, Kevin Naiqama, Adrian Davis. But it's great that AJ gets another chance, they way he played on the field for us doesn't deserve to have never played NRL.

I don't think there is much difference between Davis and Tyrone Roberts. Roberts is a year younger and a slightly better defender, but the two cousins are very close in everything else I think.

Anthony Watmough could stay at Manly after dramatic Sea Eagles ownership change

CHAMPION forward Anthony Watmough could remain at the Manly Sea Eagles following a dramatic changeover of the club’s ownership.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal part-owner Rick Penn, one of Australia’s richest men, has bought out Quantum and will now own 90 per cent of the club.

It is believed he paid around the $6 million mark in a deal that was secretly sealed on Wednesday night and reported to the Australian Stock Exchange on Thursday morning.

The move will have dramatic ramifications and could even effect the future of Watmough, who was set to depart to the Parramatta Eels.

It also places doubt over the future of general manager David Perry, who was heavily aligned to Quantum.

More importantly it ends the boardroom brawling and internal squabbling that threatened the future of the club for years.

The ownership changeover will have a huge effect on player recruitment.

Under the previous structure, the head of Quantum Phil Sydney, was heavily involved with coach Geoff Toovey in assembling the roster and negotiations with players.

It was his decision not to offer to club legend Glenn Stewart a contract which split the playing group.

Penn admires the Stewart family but didn’t have the boardroom votes to overturn the decision.

Rick Penn is a huge fan of Watmough and will try to convince him to stay.

Under the new ownership model, his son Scott Penn, will become chairman.

Manly Sea Eagles hope to convince Brett Stewart to retire as a one-NRL-club man

  • OCTOBER 24, 2014 12:00AM

WITH full autonomy, Manly’s controlling owners will sit down with restless fullback Brett Stewart and convince him into finishing his career a one-club player.

The Daily Telegraph on Thursday revealed previous part-owner Rick Penn had bought out minority shareholder Quantum and now owns 90 per cent of the Sea Eagles.

With Quantum gone, so will the bitterness and animosity at board level. The deal was worth about $6 million.

The Penn family has always supported Brett Stewart and are adamant the star fullback should remain at Manly for the duration of his glittering career.

Stewart has two years remaining on his current deal but sought a release after the club failed to re-sign brother Glenn, who joined Souths.

“Brett is such an integral part of our club,” said Penn, one of Australia’s richest businessmen.

“He is a terrific player and we want him to be a one-club player, absolutely.

“I think Brett Stewart is an ornament to the game. What he has done at Manly is incredible.”

Chairman Scott Penn added:

“Brett is so important to this club and is an amazing footballer. We have already spoken to him.

“But most importantly we need Brett to be happy and to get him in a good place.”

The Penns also wanted Glenn to remain but the Quantum faction disagree.

Quantum’s Phil Sidney didn’t wanted the club to offer Glenn a contract, a disastrous decision that split the playing roster.

Forward Anthony Watmough is another wanting out and is ready announce a move to Parramatta.

Try as the Penns may, it might be too late to keep Watmough.

Under the previous board structure, the Penns held three of the seven spots, despite being majority shareholders.

Quantum held two positions, as did the district football club.

The district club and Quantum formed a bloc vote on most issues — the Penns beaten 4-3 at the boardroom table, despite injecting most of the money.

With Quantum out, the district club’s two votes are now completely irrelevant.

Some ‘dead wood’ at Manly who sought to destabilise and agitate will now be sacked.

Manly general manager Dave Perry is also under heavy pressure to retain his job.

The Penns will now implement a new, vibrant five-year plan for the club to ensure continued success.

“Under a new structure and with full control, we will be willing to invest additional money to grow the business,” Scott Penn said.

“We acknowledge that the past couple of years off the field have been difficult, however we are committed to ensuring the Sea Eagles are a world-class organisation under consolidated ownership.

“There are a number of exciting initiatives which we will be announcing over the coming weeks.”

The district club issued a statement saying it “did not support a single private ownership model.”

Chairman Bob Stevenson said:

“The football club will continue to uphold the rights of football club members through the preference share which enshrines our name, logo, colours and where we play.”

After Sam Burgess’s departure, George could be next to leave the NRL

ENGLISH rugby union giants Gloucester are set to launch a $1 million raid to try and jag the signature of 120kg South Sydney prop forward George Burgess.

In a move that could see the Burgess brothers pitted head-to-head in northern hemisphere rugby, Sport Confidential can confirm multi-millionaire Gloucester owner Ryan Walkinshaw has made Burgess his No. 1 target on the back of his powerful NRL grand final heroics.

The South Sydney prop scored a barnstorming individual try and was only just shadowed by the performance of his brother Sam, who collected the Clive Churchill Medal with a broken cheekbone and fractured eye socket.

Gloucester rugby club owner Walkinshaw is also the owner of the Holden Special Vehicle’s and Holden Racing Team empire and is currently in Australia touring with the V8 Supercars circuit.

England international Burgess, 22, is contracted to the Rabbitohs until the end of 2016 and will play his sixth Test for England against Samoa in the Four Nations double-header in Brisbane on Saturday night.

His brother Sam sent shock waves through the NRL earlier this season by announcing he was quitting South Sydney with two years to run on his contract to pursue the prospect of playing rugby union for England at next year’s World Cup.

Greg Inglis has praised his South Sydney Rabbitohs teammate Dylan Walker, saying the 20-year-old Kangaroos debutant is an excitement machine.

In order for Burgess to be granted a release to join the powerful Bath rugby union club in London, South Sydney chief executive Shane Richardson secured a $1 million release fee.

Should George also wish to seek a release, the Rabbitohs would be expected to pursue a similar type of payout figure.

Whereas Sam will try and make the transition to playing inside centre in the 15-a-side code, George is viewed more as a backrow prospect.

geez, the Knights are flatout buying other teams reserve graders  meanwhile the 'Dogs just pick up an origin winger...

Sam Burgess maybe, but George wouldn't last very long in Union. His playing style, natural skills and talents all make him suited for rugby league.
