Giant centre Jamal Idris quits Gold Coast Titans for NRL switch to Penrith Panthers

JAMAL Idris has obtained an immediate release from Gold Coast to be closer to family in NSW, and is believed to be on the verge of signing a three-year contract with Penrith.

It's understood Idris informed the Titans of his desire to return to Sydney on Monday. He had three years remaining on his contract at Gold Coast, who signed him from Canterbury in 2011.

The former NSW Origin and Test centre will make a formidable addition to Penrith's backline, which is already bristling with speed and youthful potential.

However, Penrith are likely to be forced to release a player to accommodate Idris, with former Knights centre Brad Tighe now expected to move to the Titans.

Idris, 23, is expected to commence training with the Panthers in the next fortnight.Idris told Titans officials he wanted to return to NSW to be closer to his parents, both of whom live in Sydney's west.

He also purchased a property in the area while playing for Canterbury.

Titans CEO Graham Annesley confirmed the release had been granted on "compassionate grounds", but preferred to wait until this afternoon's official announcement to comment further.

Titans bottom four for sure now. I would actually think now the panthers are a top 6 force for sure. Brad Tighe was a nothing player really so good thing the Panthers got rid of him.

Agreed mate I also think that John Cartwright is the odds on favorite to be the first NRL coach sacked in 2014....

Wow massive panthers are gonna kill it, I'd personally play him in the back row seems like they're weakest area while there backline looks solid either way great signing, titans are doomed.

Oh and wow what a switch panthers get idris while titans get tighe seems a fair deal

Well that's big news! I guess signing the contract that Idris did with the Titans never was gonna get to the end, a great signing for Penrith.

I really don't think the Titans will be as bad as you guys think. Gun forward pack and gun young halves who will only develop further. Backline is a little weak, but the Titans were going very good towards the end of last season, knocking off the roosters and stretching the storm down in Melbourne, and all this was without Idris, so I don't see them going in the bottom four to be honest. There's much worse teams.

Sure there forwards are good and the halves pairing is solid but what is letting them down is the fullback, centres, hooker. Zillman is an average player at best and I'm surprised he has played this much first grade. Tighe and Blair is a very average centre combo and Srama and Faloon haven't got the skill to become top class hookers.

I think their halves are more than just solid. I rate Sezer very very highly, he seems like a very mature player for his age, and Kelly is extremely freakish. Both could play for NSW within the next couple of years. I rate Srama a lot too. I like the Fai Fai Loa signing, but yeah I agree the backs are a little weak, but still with a great halves, hooker and forwards, a team can afford to be a little weak in the backs and still go decent. Look at the Sharks. I'm not saying they will kill it or are contenders but I think they'll be around where they usually are, fighting around mid table

I agree that there halves are fantastic and will only get better with age but Srama is showing alot of inconsistency when he is playing. Some games Matt can play a similar style to Segeyaro but then there is other games when all he is is just another average hooker. Srama could turn out to be one of the best hookers around but he needs to get his inconsistency out of his game.

They've had a gun forward pack for the last 3-4 years, and nothing has come of it. Their backs are just **** tbh with you, Gordons just fast, sh*t defender, Mead goes alright, Takarangi is a fringe first grade player, Zillmans isn't that great, would be better on the wing, Idris was their best back...

They had one of the best, if not the best, young centres in Hymel Hunt, didnt resign him and signed Maurice Blair, who is a good player. They need an overhaul of the coaching staff up there, and sign some good backs!

John Cartwright was lucky in 09-10 with the Titans going so well. I'm surprised when many people talk about coaches who need to be sacked they never bring up Cartwright's name. I think he should of been sacked back in 2011.

I think the problem with Srama is when they play Falloon on the bench/starting. Srama should be an 80 minute hooker. Look at Isaac Luke, how much better was he when they decided to give him the full 80 rather than play him 40 and Peats 40. I do agree they have underachieved with that forward pack. There is only so far a great forward pack can get you, but least their halves are better now. They probably should cut a few forwards and recruit some strike backs.

If Kalifa Faifai Loa gets his act together and trains hard and works hard this off season, he could become one of the best wingers in the game!

If I was coach of the titans this would be my preferred backline

    1. David Mead
    2. Kalifa Faifai Loa
    3. Maurice Blair
    4. William Zillman
    5. Kevin Gordon

Better than what Cartwright would want. Titans don't have much good options for their side.

Wasn't laughing at your selections. That's the best they could do, and most would be fringe first graders at any other team.
