Hodges injury not too serious

Brisbane co-captain Justin Hodges hopes he will only miss one game with a hamstring injury that forced him off in the first half of his side's 16-4 loss to Manly at Brookvale Oval on Friday night.

Hodges also said the narrow loss against the competition leaders shows the side aren't too far away, and would give the finals a good shake if they are able to earn a spot in the top eight over the closing five rounds of the competition.

"I think it's just a lower grade one," Hodges said of the hamstring injury after the game.

Hayne-inspired Eels continue finals charge

By Jack Brady

An inspiring display from Parramatta duo Corey Norman and Jarryd Hayne has accounted for the Cronulla Sharks 32-12 as the Eels continue their push to play September football.

With 12,000-odd Sharks fans returning to Remondis Stadium for Saturday afternoon football hopeful of winning the game and continuing their quest to avoid the wooden spoon, they were instead met by a dominant Eels outfit.

In a day of firsts for both clubs, wingers Bureta Faraimo from the Eels and Valentine Holmes from the Sharks made their NRL debuts and consequently marked each other in what was a memorable showing from both rookies.

With matches against the Titans, Knights and Raiders (twice) to come on the run home, the Eels have a golden chance to escape the logjam of teams stuck on the brink of the top eight.

With windy conditions challenging both teams throughout the game, it only took 14 seconds of game time for the video referee to be utilised for a possible try.

The Eels were unlucky not to score when the Sharks fumbled a tricky kick-off it only took Hayne another two minutes to make an impact and cross for the first try of the afternoon.

A pass from five-eighth Corey Norman down the Sharks' short right-hand side defence allowed Hayne to race past Fa'amanu Brown and Jonathan Wright to run 30 metres and score in the corner.

Suspect defence from the Sharks' right-edge again saw the Eels enter space to score their second try after 10 minutes through winger Semi Radradra – his 16th of the season.

The try came from a simple through-the-hands passage of play involving Hayne and centre Ryan Morgan as the Eels posted a point a minute to lead 10-0.

Highly anticipated Sharks debutant Holmes went close to scoring his maiden NRL try after 16 minutes but he put a foot on the touch in goal line in the process of scoring, but unfazed Holmes then provided the spark to help the Sharks to their first try of the afternoon.

A wicked line break, first down the sideline and then further in field, from the debutant put the Eels in all sorts and when Ben Smith finally stopped young Holmes from causing any further damage, the Sharks went down a short side lacking Parramatta defenders and crossed through Brown.

The five-eighth's maiden first grade try, scored with 10 minutes remaining, made it an eventual 10-6 halftime scoreline though a Holmes error with an open line in front of him should have equalled the ledger with two minutes remaining in the half.

A sublime pass from Chris Sandow started the second half of scoring plays when Peni Terepo hit a hole off the halfback's short ball to race away for his first try of the season in the 44th minute to regain a 10-point buffer.

Prop Junior Paulo was placed on report soon after for taking out the legs of Sharks fullback Michael Gordon who was contesting an Eels bomb.

Eels debutant Faraimo continued Parramatta's solid run in the second half when he crossed for a debut try in the 58th minute.

It came from the influential Norman, with help from Hayne and William Hopoate, to put the 24-year-old USA international over in the corner and extend Parramatta's lead to 14.

Cronulla though, like in many games before this season, failed to quit and a solid line break from Gordon got the ball rolling for a Sharks comeback with 14 minutes remaining.

With Gordon getting picked off on halfway by a grasscutter tackle by Chris Sandow (who was surprisingly put on report for the tackle), a movement out wide saw Holmes break free and throw the ball back in to a supporting Jeff Robson with the halfback continuing his way to the line for his fourth try of the season.

With the crowd buzzing and the Sharks onslaught going hammer-and-tong at the Eels' defence with 10 minutes remaining, an unfortunate error from Tinirau Arona saw Hayne scoop the ball up before racing 95 metres downfield to score his second try of the afternoon and put the game out of reach for the Sharks at 26-12.

This was despite a clearly struggling Hayne being caught on his run by Cronulla winger Jacob Gagan but a big fend gave him the impetus to cross the line before being given a rest for the closing stages by his coach.

A sneaky Hopoate quick tap from a penalty close to Cronulla's line saw Faraimo cross for his second of the afternoon in the 77th minute.

Looking out towards the open side, Hopoate dummied and threw it to Faraimo waiting in the corner to close out the game 32-12 and earn popular and long-serving prop Fuifui Moimoi a win in his 200th career game.

Parramatta Eels - 32 (Faraimo 2, Hayne 2, Radradra, Terepo tries; Sandow 4 goals)

JT guides hard-hitting Cowboys past Titans

By Steven Ross, North Queensland Correspondent
NRL.com
7:51pm Sat 02nd August, 2014

It took the best part of half an hour, but the Cowboys found their mojo to comfortably bury the visiting Gold Coast Titans 28-8 in front of almost 15,000 vocal fans.

It was the old firm of Thurston and returning veterans Matt Scott and Gavin Cooper who proved too creative for a Titans side that jumped the Cowboys early, but whose work was dispelled in a matter of five minutes as the first half came to a close.

Along with the usual names, destructive edge-runner Jason Taumalolo was at his bullish best, making half breaks every carry, reminiscent of opposite Dave Taylor through the past two weeks.

Officials looked to set the tone early in the contest, giving both defences a lot of leeway in the ruck, giving neither team any attacking rhythm.

e Titans handed the home side the game's first sniff when halfback Daniel Mortimer sent the Steeden sailing over the right touchline in a simple kick for touch.

But the combination of poor patience and stout goal-line defence from the visitors prevented first points.

A regulation leave from Cowboys fullback Michael Morgan almost turned sour when Titans flyer James Roberts burned a path to a perfectly weighted Brad Takarangi chip kick, but replays showed Morgan had just managed a toe to the force the ball dead.

That was one of four consecutive attacking sets the Cowboys had repelled on their own goal line, and the pressure valve was eventually relieved by a Paul Carter knock-on.

The tempo was starting to rise and the home side looked to have troubled the scorers on the back of some keep-off play between halves Lui and Thurston up the middle.

The ensuing break was finished in the in-goal by Taumalolo but referees reversed their on-field decision, explaining that they had called 'help-up' before Taumalolo touched the ball down.

Both teams continued wasting opportunities until the ill-disciplined Cowboys gave away one too many ruck penalties, leaving Titans goal-kicker Kevin Gordon to open the account with a penalty goal.

That proved the impetus for a golden patch for the Coasters. A clocked-off Cowboys defence was caught napping on the try line own goal line when a flatfooted Takairangi received a pass from Beau Faloon.

A series of left-foot steps beat both Sims brothers, Morgan and prop Scott Bolton for the softest of tries, edging the visitors ahead 8-0 after the conversion.

That proved the wake-up call the Cowboys needed. A fortuitous restart found Takairangi on the back foot while falling out behind the dead ball line, before throwing a panicked pass to Luke Bailey.

Bailey was ruled to have jumped from behind the dead ball line before taking the pass, resulting in a Cowboys penalty.

They failed to score immediately, but pinned the Titans in their own end in the following set and then got their first four-pointer.

Morgan followed a perfectly-weighted Thurston grubber, beating David Mead to the punch and planting it down, with a try awarded after almost five minutes of referee deliberations.

That was all the fuel North Queensland needed and they were soon back looking like superheroes.

Thurston's chemistry with Gavin Cooper was on show in the second-rower's first game back as he hit a hole at pace off a Thurston short ball and ran 50 metres to score under the sticks.

After destructive first halves, both Taumalolo and Scott picked up where they left off in the second, dragging multiple defenders through the middle of the ruck.

That aggression served as a precursor for what was to come.

The home side was rewarded for its work through the middle third when Mead made a meal of a Thurston chip bomb, resulting in a pile of bodies that had the men upstairs working overtime to break down the pile of players around the football.

Replays showed in the end that Mead had lost it through his legs, allowing Thurston to touch down.

North Queensland effectively put the game to bed 25 minutes out from full time when Tautau Moga scored off another haphazard fallout from a Thurston kick.

A fracas eventuated with 20 minutes left when Paul Carter hit a dummy-running Ashton Sims, bringing about an all-out brawl and long talking-to's from referee Jared Maxwell.

But it wasn't over, with Falloon picking up and dumping Lui behind the play before more jaw massages played out between Sims and Carter.

Feelings were eventually quelled after good management from Maxwell, but not before Takairangi went off after some chin music from Glenn Hall.

Five minutes later, the cherry was put on top by Kane Linnett who had very little to do after great work from his inside men Lui and Thurston.

Gold Coast Titans 8 (Takairangi try; Gordon 2 goals)

Roosters welcome back Jennings in style

By Dan Walsh
NRL.com
9:35pm Sat 02nd August, 2014

Clad in Captain America get-up, second half-heroics from Michael Jennings and Aidan Guerra have secured the Roosters a hard-fought 30-22 win over the Dragons at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

Jennings' two-try haul in his first outing in 6 weeks and Guerra's own second half four-pointer saw the Roosters switch on the afterburners and put away a valiant Dragons outfit despite incredibly having to defend an extra 12 sets and only enjoying 45 per cent of possession.

Holding a slender 12-10 lead after an insipid first 40 minutes the Roosters stepped up a notch in the second half, running in three tries to secure a fifth straight win over the Red V and continue their flirtation with the top four.

Jennings and fellow Origin star Brett Morris traded four pointers in the ninth and 14th minute respectively to kick things off.

Jennings' the result of a James Maloney bomb and Morris gifted his eighth try of the year by a fumble from Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in his in-goal – and a missed conversion attempt from Gareth Widdop was the only difference as the Roosters took a 6-4 lead out of the opening exchanges.

Joel Thompson was next across the line courtesy of a flat ball from Widdop – ensuring he won't be completing a nudie run around WIN Stadium with his first try for the red and whites – to give the visitors a 10-6 advantage, though not without a healthy dose of controversy in the lead up.

Thompson's try came off the back of a long break from Morris, who had taken a quick tap after referee Shayne Hayne pinged the Roosters marker defence, despite the Tricolours believing the penalty had been given for offside – an infringement where a quick-tap cannot be taken.

A slick left-side shift that put young Roosters flyer Nene MacDonald on the outside of his man in the 31st minute pushed the Chooks back in front 12-10, and the premiers extended their lead beyond a converted try when Guerra surged through three defenders, stretched out the go-go gadget arms and caught a piece of the try-line seven minutes after the break.

Jennings' second meat pie of the night, a 61st-minute touchdown of a Maloney grubber, followed by a successful conversion from the five-eighth sounded the death knell for the Dragons, only for the tolling bell to be proved premature by a Mitch Pearce knock-on off the kick-off.

A charge down from Guerra with the Dragons on the attack in the ensuing set saved his halfback further embarrassment and sent the back-rower seventy metres downfield, with only a desperate chase and try-saving tackle from Mitch Rein preventing the Chooks from stretching their lead further.

Benji Marshall's own fleet-footed showing in the 70th minute, which saw him leaving three Roosters clutching at thin air over the course of a 20-metre jink to the tryline, gave the Dragons a sliver of hope with the clock winding down.

But when Jake Friend to struck back immediately after with his a try from dummy half, the Roosters' 14-point buffer was again restored, and only reduced two minutes out from fulltime by a consolation try to Josh Dugan.

Sydney Roosters - 30 (M Jennings 2, N MacDonald, A Guerra, J Friend tries; J Maloney 5 goals)

Defeated

St. George Illawarra Dragons - 22 (B Morris, J Thompson, B Marshall, J Dugan tries; G Widdop 3 goals)

I think JT will be right up there. Was only 1 point off the lead when it went behind closed doors. Would of got some points on Hayne when the eels got spanked in consecutive weeks a few weeks ago.

Cronulla Sharks vice-captain Wade Graham’s season appears over due to foot injury

  • DAVID RICCIO CHIEF SPORTS WRITER
  • THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
  • AUGUST 03, 2014 3:35PM

AS if Cronulla’s season couldn’t get any worse, vice-captain Wade Graham’s year could be over.

A meeting on Monday with the Sharks medical staff will determine the recovery process facing the talented backrower after scans on Sunday morning revealed a stress fracture in his foot.

With just five weeks remaining, Graham is aware that Monday’s appointment could spell the end of his 2014 season.

His omission from the Sharks squad, who are desperate to avoid the wooden spoon, would prove a devastating blow in a year to forget for the Sutherland Shire club.

Graham suffered the injury during last Saturday’s heavy home defeat to Parramatta.

Remarkably, and underlining his fortitude as a leader of the club, Graham produced 30 tackles and 15 runs despite the obvious pain.

The 23-year-old could hardly walk, with a heavy bag of ice strapped to his ankle as he fronted the post-match press conference.

The injury would also prove a significant personal setback.

After being identified by NSW State of Origin coach Laurie Daley during this year’s series as a future Blue, Graham would have been a certainty to be chosen for this year’s Prime Minister’s XIII squad to play Papua New Guinea after the grand final.

Also joining Graham in the Sharks casualty ward are Anthony Tupou, Luke Lewis and Jacob Gagan, all of whom suffered hamstring injuries against the Eels.

The trio will also be re-assessed when the Sharks return to training on Monday.

The Sharks travel to New Zealand to tackle the Warriors on Sunday with Graham’s omission likely to be offset by the return of NSW State of Origin and Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen (bicep), promising winger Sosaia Feki (foot) and Matt Prior (suspension).

Every match is a must-win for the struggling Sharks as they attempt to avoid their first wooden spoon since 1969.

Titans sweat on Sezer return date

By Tony Webeck, Chief Queensland Correspondent
NRL.com
6:00am Tue 05th August, 2014

The finals prospects of the Titans are now in the hands of mathematicians and medical staff as coach John Cartwright awaits instruction as to whether Aidan Sezer will be available to play the Roosters next Monday night in Sydney.

Sezer, the Titans' first-choice five-eighth, hasn't played since rupturing his pectoral muscle against the Broncos in Round 10 but is close to receiving a recall for the clash that will either keep Gold Coast's season on life support or kill it off for good.

Prop Luke Bailey and winger David Mead made their returns from hamstring injuries on Saturday and William Zillman is expected to be fit for the Roosters but the focus of the medical team this week will revolve around their talismanic five-eighth.

Although he participated in ball-work sessions last week, Sezer is unlikely to be named in the team by Cartwright tomorrow but his progress will be monitored as to whether he can bypass a week in the Intrust Super Cup and come straight back after 12 weeks out.

"I'm not sure. We've got a big turnaround, we don't play until next Monday so I'll talk to the medical staff this week and if he's available... I don't know if he's available yet," Cartwright said.

"I think next week is the 12 weeks so we'll just have to see if he's available then and what we do with him."

Over the past two weeks Sezer has been schooling stand-in five-eighth Brad Takairangi on the finer points of his kicking game, an area where the Titans have been found wanting while Sezer has been sidelined.

Having taken a back seat and allowed Daniel Mortimer to control the kicking game in their first two weeks as a halves partnership, Takairangi was the more dominant kicker against the Cowboys and earned two repeat sets in the first half through kicks into the in-goal and paid tribute to the help of Sezer in bringing his kicking game up to speed.

"He can put it on a dime and his long kicking game is something that we've missed, especially with me and 'Morts' being in the halves," Takairangi, who also scored the Titans' only try of the game, told NRL.com.

"Because I'm a right-footer on the left side of the field, when the kick pressure comes from the inside they're coming at my kicking leg.

"I'm sweet on the right side but just little tips on the left side of the field, kicking on my bad side, just because I've got to practise stepping in and kicking off my inside foot, instead of kicking through the line. Just little pointers, he's good like that.

"Any half that jumps in there is pretty calm but I think the main thing with 'Seze' is he does direct play pretty well and definitely his kicking game.

"You can't get away with a bad kicking game these days, especially with the way we've been completing lately, but hopefully he's back next week.

"I was happy with a couple of the kicks but I've still got a bit of work to do if I'm going to play six again.

"I love playing at six, I get my hands on the ball a bit more and can do a bit more with it instead of waiting out in the centres to get it, I'm really enjoying it."

With Albert Kelly also on the sideline with a quadriceps injury, co-captain Greg Bird said the return of Sezer was integral to bringing some stability to a side that now needs to win all of their remaining five games to be any hope of sneaking into the top eight.

"It's awfully hard, losing both your halves," said Bird.

"We had that good run at the start of the year with our first-choice halves and since then they've swapped and changed and that's probably been one of the determining factors of why we are where we are on the ladder.

"We'll definitely enjoy having some stability and that's what he brings."

Stability off the field is another talking point amongst Titans players at present with Takairangi, Luke Bailey and Mark Minichiello all trying to determine where their playing futures lie.

Takairangi denied speculation that he has agreed to join the Sharks in 2015 but is eager to make a decision in the coming weeks.

"I'm not too sure what's happening there. I know there's a bit of interest but nothing on the table or anything like that," the 25-year-old former Rooster said.

"I guess because it's getting a little bit later in the year I guess it could [play on your mind] but not too much for me.

"I'm just concentrating on trying to play good for the Titans and hopefully that can sort out my future sooner rather than later."

Sharks injury crisis deepens with Luke Lewis and Jacob Gagan to miss the rest of the season

  • JOSH MASSOUD
  • THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
  • AUGUST 05, 2014 12:00PM

CRONULLA’S injury curse has deepened, with star back rower Luke Lewis and rookie winger Jacob Gagan expected to miss the rest of the season with leg injuries.

Sharks doctors are still to confirm the exact details of Lewis’s injury, which is either a hamstring or knee complaint.

Either way it is serious enough to rule him out for at least a month, effectively ending his 2014 campaign.

Gagan suffered a serious hamstring tear in Saturday’s loss to Parramatta and has played his last game of the year, joining stand-in skipper Wade Graham (foot) on the sidelines for the final five rounds.

To compound their personnel woes, Cronulla is also expected to be missing Anthony Tupou for a couple of weeks after he suffered a hamstring tear against the Eels.

The last-placed Sharks had used 35 players prior to last weekend, but it’s believed the club still has space under its second tier cap to blood youngsters in the coming weeks.

Captain Paul Gallen is also considered a good chance to return from a torn biceps lay off for Sunday’s clash against the Warriors in Auckland.
