2014 Newcastle Knights Awards

The interesting thing for me was Tyler Randell getting the coach's award in NSW cup.
Stone really does rate him.

Chad Redman scrubs up well. I didn't recognise him at first.

Buderus joins Knights Hall of Fame

Mon 13th October, 12:45PM

Newcastle Knights' favourite son, Danny Buderus has been inducted into The Newcastle Knights Hall of Fame recognising an incredible career filled with countless representative highlights and Club achievements.

Buderus was inducted alongside Mark Sargent and Tony Butterfield who join the likes of Matt Gidley, Michael Hagan, Paul Harragon, Andrew Johns and the late Allan McMahon.

Danny Buderus left no stone unturned in a career that scaled the greatest heights.

He captained Newcastle, NSW and Australia, won the 2001 NRL premiership with the Knights and in 2004 won the Dally M Medal as rugby league’s best and fairest player.

Returning to the Knights in 2012 for a second stint after three years in England with Leeds Rhinos, Buderus retired at the end of 2013 as the most capped player in Knights history with 257 games to his name in an NRL career that spanned 14 seasons.

Having spent his junior years in the halves, Taree-born Buderus covered several back-line positions in his first years of first grade, then made the role of hooker his own.

Dynamite out of dummy-half, a fearless front-line defender, and the epitome of being the player other players wanted to play with, Buderus won a record four Player of the Year (1999, 2003, 2004, 2006) and Players’ Player of the Year (2004, 2008, 2012, 2013) awards.

He played a record 21 straight State of Origin games for NSW from 2002 to 2008, including the last 15 in a row as skipper, captained Australia in four of the 24 Tests he played, and in 1997 was named hooker in the Knights’ 20-Year Team.

The Hall of Fame induction was announced by Hall of Fame committee spokesman and Newcastle Herald rugby league reporter and Hall of Fame committee spokesman Brett Keeble during the Knights’ 2014 Awards evening held at Wests New Lambton on Thursday.

“It’s totally unexpected the guys at the Knights from top to bottom in the organisation have been fantastic to myself,” Buderus told Knights TV after accepting the accolade.

“To think that I could be involved as a Hall of Fame Member is amazing, I’m just honoured to be in amongst it, it’s such an exclusive group.

“I came down here as a young teenager to follow my dreams and play a couple of games with the Knights, and I went on to play a fair few.

“It just goes to show that sometimes talents isn’t not enough, it’s hard work.

“That what my credo was, just being about outworking my teammates and my opponents.”

Newcastle Knights Hall of Fame

At the beginning of 2012, the Newcastle Knights launched the Club’s Hall of Fame as the cornerstone of their 25[SUP]th[/SUP] year celebrations.

The key objectives of the Hall of Fame were to acknowledge the Club’s former greats and their contribution to the Club both on and off the field in a region so rich in rugby league culture.

To be eligible for nomination, players and coaches must be retired.

The Hall of Fame selection committee can nominate up to two inductees each year and that panel comprises:

Former Knights Chairman, Michael Hill

Former TV and radio commentator, Leigh Maughan

Foundation Knights coaching director, Allan Bell

Newcastle Herald Rugby League reporter, Brett Keeble

NBN television sports presenter and commentator Mike Rabbitt.

Knights first Kangaroo joins Hall of Fame

Mon 13th October, 04:08PM

Mark Sargent has been inducted into the Club’s Hall of Fame with the history making Knight hailing the achievement a tremendous honour to be among some of the Club’s iconic legends.

Born and bred in Newcastle, and a product of Central Charlestown Butcher Boys, Mark Sargent had to leave town to chase his dream of playing big-time rugby league.

He leapt at the chance to come home after three seasons at Canterbury and in his first season at the Knights, Sargent was presented with the 1989 Rothmans Medal, sharing the game’s best-and-fairest player award with Cronulla’s Gavin Miller.

At the end of his second season, the skillful, mobile prop became the Club’s first Australian Test representative when he toured with the 1990 Kangaroos, then in 1992 returned to England at the end of the season with Australia’s triumphant World Cup squad.

In one of his most memorable games for Newcastle, a game they had to win to make their first finals series, he scored a hat-trick of tries in a victory over Canberra in the last round of 1992.

A NSW, City and Country representative, Sargent played 126 games in seven seasons with the Knights and in 1997 was named as a member of the club’s 20-Year Team.

Sargent succeeded great mate Michael Hagan as captain in 1994, continuing in that role until a knee injury prematurely ended his Knights playing career midway through 1995.

After two years sitting on the NRL judiciary panel, Sargent returned to the Knights in 2001 as football manager, and the Knights were crowned NRL premiers at the end of that season.

“It’s a tremendous honour to be recognised in this way by such a great Club," Sargent said on learning of his place in the Hall of Fame.

He was unable to attend the Newcastle Knights 2014 Awards ceremony, but took the opportunity beforehand to thank those who have made a contribution to his career and offered support including his family and the Club’s staff and players.

“I played in the very early part of the Club’s history and sometimes those guys get a little bit lost in the mist of time, so hopefully they will see this as a reflection of their contribution to the Club as well,” he said.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the fans, it’s a Hall of Fame nomination and you don’t get famous without fans.

“This Club’s fans have been fantastic to me when I was playing and that has continued in the nearly 20 years since I retired.

“I count myself as very fortunate and very grateful to be with a very committed group of people.”

Butterfield cherishes Hall of Fame induction

Tue 14th October, 09:17AM

The talent and toughness of Tony Butterfield was acknowledged at the Newcastle Knights 2014 Awards Night with the foundation Knight inducted into the Club’s Hall of Fame.

Butterfield was inducted alongside Mark Sargent and Danny Buderus who join the likes of Matt Gidley, Michael Hagan, Paul Harragon, Andrew Johns and the late Allan McMahon in the Knights Hall of Fame.

‘‘This Club means an enormous amount to me,’’ Butterfield said on stage at the Awards Night on Thursday.

‘‘To be up here tonight and to be recognised in this way is an extraordinary honour and one I cherish deeply.’

‘‘The happiest moment of my footy career was probably the grand final and it was because we had finally achieved the respect that this community deserved."

Originally from Penrith, Tony Butterfield arrived in Newcastle for the Knights’ first crusade in 1988 and quickly felt at home in his new town and with his new team.

Foundation coach Allan McMahon wanted players with the ‘‘Three Ts’’ – they had to be tough, had to be able to tackle, and had to have plenty of tomorrows. ‘‘Butts’’ ticked all three boxes.

Establishing himself as one of the ‘‘Bruise Brothers’’, Butterfield ensured rival forwards visiting Newcastle might have taken two points with them in the club’s formative early years but they also went home black and blue.

Overcoming a series of injuries early in his career, the flint-hard front-rower went on to partner prop Paul Harragon in the team’s famous ARL grand final victory over Manly in 1997, and represented NSW and City Origin while wearing blue and red.

A two-time Player of the Year (1988, 1996) and Players’ Player of the Year (1996, 1997), and member of the club’s 20-Year Team named in 1997, he captained the Knights in his final two seasons and went within a game of leading them to the 2000 grand final.

Butterfield was 34 when he played his 229th and final game for the Knights, setting a mark as their most capped player until Andrew Johns broke his record some six years later.

I think that interview is a week old, but I hope the rumours of him leaving are not true.
I think it would be hard for him to leave halfway through his degree at Newcastle Uni. It can be done, but it isn't that easy to change unis mid course.

Well the rumours that he was gone started a few months ago. But they were just that, rumours, nothing from any news articles or clubs, so when a Knights article from a week ago says he's doing a pre-season with first-grade you gotta take it as truth.
