Rd 26 Intrust Super Cup preview

QRL Media

Fri 29th August, 10:12AM

IPSWICH JETS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday, August 30 – 2.30pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Redcliffe 25 Ipswich 13
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #JETSvPHINS
Live call: www.phoenixradio.com.au

Ipswich received a massive boost last night when skipper Keiron Lander was found not guilty of Grade 1 Contrary Conduct at the QRL judiciary.

The result paves the way for Lander to play in tomorrow’s must-win match against the Redcliffe Dolphins at the North Ipswich Reserve.

An Ipswich victory would confirm a fourth-straight finals appearance for the Jets under the guidance of co-coaches Shane and Ben Walker.

However, a loss would see them miss the top five with competition newcomers the PNG Hunters the beneficiaries.

Eleventh-placed Redcliffe have endured a frustrating season but with the likes of Adrian Davis, Aaron Whitchurch, Zach Strasser, Cameron Cullen, Dave Hala and Jon Green in the line-up, the Phins have the talent to upstage the Jets.

The match will be Hala’s 50[SUP]th[/SUP] game for the Dolphins in the Intrust Super Cup.

A big crowd is expected at the Reserve for Ipswich’s annual Old Boys Day, and local fans will rally behind popular 150-game club stalwart Brendon Marshall who announced his retirement last night.

EASTS TIGERS v WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS

Langlands Park on Sunday, August 31 – 2pm* (Live on Channel 9/WIN/NBN)
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head to Head: Easts 18 Wynnum 17 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #TIGESvWYN
Live call: Tiger on Air

In an interesting twist – these two sides will meet again next week in the qualifying semi-final. However, the result of this match will decide where it will be played, with both teams keen to claim the right to host that match in front of their parochial home crowd.

One of the Tigers key weapons will be missing this weekend with Cameron Munster to be sidelined (with a one-match ban) for a shoulder charge offence.

Eddie Tautali has been named as his replacement at fullback, while other changes to the Tigers line-up sees Liam McDonald to return for John Puna.

Wynnum Manly are coming off the bye and will field three changes to their round 24 side that defeated PNG.

Tanu Wulf starts for Billy Solah at prop, John Te Reo comes onto the bench for Lachlan Bristow and Alehana Mara into the hooking role for Jake Granville.

However, Granville has not been named for the Broncos, and is likely to feature.

This weekend is also the Turn to Me round supporting beyondblue, with the initiative to feature prominently in Sunday’s Channel 9 telecast.

In milestone news, Shane Neumann will play his 100th Cup game for Easts and his 119th overall, having previously played for the Sunshine Coast.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS v MACKAY CUTTERS

Piggabeen Sports on Sunday, August 31 – 2pm
Referee: Tim Rutherford
Head to Head: Tweed 7 Mackay 2 Drawn 4
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #THSvMC

Tweed Heads are throwing open the gates for their crucial final home match of the regular season.

Tweed will automatically qualify for the finals if the Jets lose tomorrow.

However, an Ipswich victory would keep the heat on the Seagulls, as they would be bundled out of the top five if they lose by 12 points or more.

Piggabeen is the place to be on Sunday with face painting, jumping castles, pass the ball and goal kicking tips from Seagulls players for the kids.

The club will also be raising money for the children’s ward of the Tweed Hospital and the Bush Fire Brigade with a raffle.

On the field – it is set to be a great game, with the two sides having a history of close encounters.

Nine of their 13 games have been decided by a converted try or less, including four draws.

Gulls coach Aaron Zimmerle has named an unchanged side to the one that got their season back on track with a strong 26-4 win over the Falcons at a sodden Sunshine Coast Stadium last weekend.

They will come up against a committed Cutters group who have found their rhythm in the second half of the season and are in good form.

Mackay forward Kelvin Nielsen has been named to play after serving a one-match suspension, with prop Dan Beasley also named to return to the side.

Rohan Ahern and Pulou Vaituutuu are the players to make way.

BURLEIGH BEARS v NORTHERN PRIDE

Pizzey Park on Sunday, August 31 – 2pm
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head to Head: Pride 9 Burleigh 3 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #BEARSvPRIDE

After last week’s disappointing loss to the Easts Tigers, the Bears are back home for their final match of the season against the Northern Pride on Sunday.

The Bears have won only one of their past nine matches against the Pride, and with nothing but respect to play for, will look to improve on their 26-10 loss in round 12.

After a convincing victory over finals rivals the Ipswich Jets last weekend, the Pride are priming themselves for September football.

The minor premiers have made just one change to last week’s side, adding young half Jared Allen to an extended bench.

The Bears will welcome back Kyle McConnell, James Dunley and current leading points scorer Khan Ahwang onto the bench, with Francis Veukiso, Chris Kitching and Shaun Maloney making way.

Cowboys forward Ricky Thorby will play his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game for the Pride this weekend (and his 55[SUP]th[/SUP] overall), and will look to make an impact up front in the absence of injured regulars Ben Spina and Alex Starmer.

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS

Davies Park on Sunday, August 31 – 2pm
Referee: Liam Kennedy
Head to Head: Souths Logan 9 Sunshine Coast 3
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #SLMvSCF

The Falcons will fly into Magpie territory on Sunday – hoping to add one more win to their season tally.

The Sunshine Coast went down to a determined Tweed Heads last week; while Souths Logan also struggled against another side who were playing for their finals chances in the Hunters.

The Magpies tried hard throughout – but couldn’t contain PNG who have proven they can score tries from anywhere, including from deep within their own half.

For this final match of the season, coach Josh Hannay has recalled Tim Brooks to the centres, with Brandon Khuu returning to the Colts side, while Mitch Cronin moves from hooker to fullback.

Unfortunately, the Magpies will be without lock Leon Panapa, who suffered a neck injury last weekend.

His place will be taken by Aotealofa Tuimavave.

For the Falcons, Mboya Adams has been named to replace Liam Anlezark at prop.

Positional changes see Kyle van Klaveren move from five-eighth to fullback, Tom Murphy to five-eighth from lock and Callum Klein into the centres after holding the custodian role against the Seagulls.

NORTHS DEVILS v CQ CAPRAS

Bishop Park on Sunday, August 31 – 3pm
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head to Head: Norths 23 Central 10 Drawn 2
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #DEVILSvCQC

The Norths Devils lit up Bishop Park last weekend in a nine-try romp against the Dolphins, and will look to finish the season in similar fashion when they return to their home ground this Sunday.

They will be hosting the CQ Capras – who were unable to stop the Cutters from posting a 40-20 win last weekend.

The Devils however were back to their early-season best last weekend; and having won the past five encounters between the two sides, they will enter this contest confident of another victory.

However, the Central Queensland side have left the Nundah venue victorious on the past two occasions they played there, in 2008 and 2011.

The Devils have named Mark Vaiao to replace Byron Creighton, while the Capras have made four changes from last weekend.

Mitch Hallinan, Smith Samau and Shannon Rupapere return to the starting side for Sam Doherty, Hayden Buckman and Reece Baker respectively; Brody Mayne drops off the bench to be replaced by Sam Madden.

The Capras started strongly against Mackay last week before dropping away in the second half.

If Jason Hetherington’s men can keep that intensity for 80 minutes on Sunday, expect a closer score line to the 38-8 result to the Devils in round 7.

PNG Hunters – bye

Garbutt makes really good numbers, it's a big shame we weren't able to get him back for next year, he would have been exactly what we need.

The Seagulls secured the right to host this elimination final against Ipswich in the final minute of last week’s game and will hope their home ground advantage keeps them in this year’s finals race.

The Jets have not beaten Tweed Heads south of the border in their past 13 attempts.

Both teams have named unchanged sides – however, Aaron Zimmerle will be forced into at least one change, with Cory Blair accepting a two-match ban for a dangerous throw.

He will be a significant loss, having made a game high 17 runs for 180 metres for his team in Tweed’s 26-22 win over the Cutters last week.

If he passes a fitness test on his hamstring, Tom Merritt could come in at fullback for Jahrome Hughes (shoulder); while prop Reg Saunders has served a three-game suspension and could come into contention.

This will be a game of milestones with Tweed co-captain James Wood to play his 200th Cup game; making him the 12[SUP]th[/SUP] player to do so and the sixth to play 200 for a single club.

Jets half Dane Phillips (Eas/SL) will also lace the boots for his 100[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game.

This will also be the final game for a competition stalwart – with both clubs farewelling key players.

Jets centre Brendon Marshall (152 games; 59 tries; 50 goals; overall 336 points) and Seagulls co-captain Matt King (190 games for Tweed {231 overall including Souths Logan}, 37 tries, 3 goals, 1 FG, overall 155 points) have announced their intention to retire at the end of the season.

If last weekend’s final round thriller was a taste of things to come, then this Sunday’s qualifying final between Wynnum Manly and Easts shapes as another mouth-watering contest.

A 78[SUP]th[/SUP] minute try secured the 18-14 victory for the bayside team last weekend; and in doing so, assured them of a home final.

The Seagulls have had the Tigers’ measure in recent times, having lost only three of the past 14 matches between the two sides.

In saying this however, Easts enter the finals having won their past seven away games, and after last weekend’s nail-biting performance, the side will be confident in their chances of turning things around and securing a win.

Key to this goal is the inclusion of fullback Cameron Munster, who returns from a one-game suspension in place of Eddie Tautali.

Tom Butterfield might have to wait to play his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] game for Easts (and his 129[SUP]th[/SUP] overall having previously played for Redcliffe) as he is battling a hamstring injury, with Liam Tyson taking his place at hooker.

Felise Kaufusi and Donald Malone have been added to an extended bench.

However, it has been reported that Mitch Garbutt is out of the match with a groin injury in a big blow to the side.

Wynnum have made only one change to last weekend’s side, naming Alehana Mara to start over Jake Granville; however Granville has not been named for the Broncos this weekend and will likely be a late inclusion.

Meanwhile, Tigers coach Craig Ingebrigtsen will hope to celebrate his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] game as coach with an important victory.

QRL announces Townsville's entry

Wed 10th September, 04:43PM

The Intrust Super Cup’s significant growth will continue next season with the Queensland Rugby League today announcing the inclusion of the Townsville Blackhawks in the 2015 competition.

Expansion into Townsville comes on the back of the success of the Papua New Guinea Hunters, who left an indelible mark on the Intrust Super Cup in their debut season.

Queensland Rugby League Chairman Peter Betros officially informed more than 300 guests of the Blackhawks’ entry at tonight’s annual QRL Gala Dinner at Brisbane City Hall.

The marquee competition’s 14[SUP]th[/SUP] team are set to play their home games out of Jack Manski Oval in Townsville.

The new club will have the backing of the North Queensland Cowboys, who will importantly maintain their affiliation with the Northern Pride and Mackay Cutters.

Townsville’s participation will reignite one of North Queensland’s great rivalries with discussions already underway about the possible return of the Foley Shield.

Gavin Lyons, Chairman of the successful bid team’s steering committee, said such a concept had the potential to generate further interest in the game.

The Blackhawks will now focus on laying the foundations of their club, with a number of imminent announcements, including sponsorship and staff appointments, on their radar.

“This is a great opportunity for the kids coming through,” Lyons said.

“We’ve been pushing this for a couple of years now and the rugby league players in town are excited about the opportunities it will present.”

Jamie O’Connor, QRL General Manager of Major Competitions, echoed those sentiments.

“We’ve identified for some time the need to have an Intrust Super Cup club in Townsville,” O’Connor said.

“It is the largest region outside of South East Queensland and is a market that we want a significant foothold in.

“As it stands, a gap in the player pathway exists in Townsville for players over the age of 20.

“The Blackhawks provide a great opportunity for these players to continue their development through Intrust Super Cup and hopefully onto NRL and the XXXX Queensland Maroons.”

Townsville’s entry comes after the NRL approved recent applications for increased funding, the final condition of the fledgling club’s participation.

“Potential for expansion in second tier footy was recognised in the NRL’s Elite Pathways review and Townsville was already an area identified by us,” O’Connor said.

“This is another step towards a genuine statewide competition and we look forward to their entry in 2015.

“There is now some work to be done with the existing clubs in regards to scheduling for the new season.”

Page wins Courier Mail Medal

QRL Media

Wed 10th September, 11:07PM

Luke Page was tonight recognised as the Intrust Super Cup’s best and fairest player after receiving the Courier-Mail Medal at the QRL’s Gala Awards dinner.

The emerging representative forward tallied 29 points, collecting the maximum three points in the final round to edge out Norths Devils playmaker Todd Murphy (26).

PNG skipper Israel Eliab (24), Ipswich captain Keiron Lander (21), Mackay hooker Anthony Mitchell (19) and Northern Pride’s Manly bound back-rower Blake Leary (19) were the other leading contenders.

Page commenced the Intrust Super Cup season with the Burleigh Bears, but went on to don the black and white of Souths Logan after signing mid-season with the Magpies’ NRL affiliate Canberra.

The award caps a breakthrough season for Page, who represented the Queensland Residents at Suncorp Stadium in July.

The Courier-Mail Medal is judged by the referees who allocate votes on a 3-2-1 basis after each Intrust Super Cup match.

Recent recipients of the prestigious award include Daly Cherry-Evans (2010, Sunshine Coast), Javarn White (2011, Norths), Luke Capewell (2012, Redcliffe) and Cody Walker (2013, Easts).

* The XXXX People’s Choice Award was won by Papua New Guinea Hunters enforcer Willie Minoga.

Minoga was a clear-cut favourite amongst fans, receiving nearly 40 percent of the total votes. Peter Gubb (Wynnum Manly Seagulls) and Davin Crampton (Northern Pride) polled strongly as well.

Minoga’s teammate Garry Lo was the Rookie of the Year for his sizzling efforts on the wing.

Wynnum Manly’s Jon Buchanan was the Coach of the Year, while the Pride’s Blake Leary received the Representative Player of the Year.

It’s a case of history repeating with the Pride again hosting Easts in a major semi-final.

However, the Pride will be hoping to write a new ending to the script which saw them suffer a finals fadeout last year - all beginning with their shock loss to the Tigers at Barlow Park.

The Pride have had a weekend off to regroup following a disappointing final round loss to Burleigh and will be ready for this enticing encounter.

The Tigers are a side who are hitting their straps at this most crucial time of the competition and showed great improvement in defeating Wynnum Manly last weekend.

This week however, Tigers coach Craig Ingebrigtsen has had to shuffle his line-up with key forward Dane Hogan out with a rib injury and Tom Butterfield suspended for one match for a high tackle.

Jacob Fauid and Matthew Zgrajewski have also not been named due to injury.

However, Storm prop Mitchell Garbutt is set to return in a boost for the side, with rising star Liam Tyson named in the halves. Jacob Ling has been included at lock.

For the Pride, there is only one change, with Ryan Ghietti coming onto the bench while Patrick Kaufusi is out of this match.

Both sides have won one game apiece this year, with Easts winning the delayed round 7 match at Mareeba 16-4, while the Pride were convincing 44-20 victors at Langlands Park in round 16.

This will be the 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game for both Pride halves in Sam Obst (previously with Redcliffe) and Melbourne-bound Shaun Nona (all Pride).

A popular figure at Wynnum Manly, Jake Granville will play in his final game at BMD Kougari Oval this Sunday when they host Ipswich in an elimination semi-final.

Granville – originally from Rockhampton – has signed with the North Queensland Cowboys for next season and will need to be at his best against a Jets side full of confidence.

They defeated Tweed Heads 28-10 last weekend – breaking their Piggabeen hoodoo in the process.

Granville joined the Seagulls in 2007 and since then has played 107 Intrust Super Cup games for the club who will be providing free “Jake masks” to the crowd this weekend.

Fans are in for a further treat with the Seagulls organising a giant screen supplied by Skyboard Australasia.

On the field, coach Jon Buchananwill need to replace Jordan Kahu, who returns to the NRL for the Broncos’ elimination final against the Cowboys.

For the Jets – the Walkers have named an unchanged line-up for this do-or-die match, and will be hoping their team’s recent success against the Seagulls continues.

Ipswich have won three of the past four games between these two sides and were only narrowly defeated (26-20) in their last encounter.

Interestingly – although the Seagulls have an imposing home record this season winning nine of 12 games; they have only won three out of 10 finals played at the venue.

This will also be the 50th Cup game for Seagulls centre Mitchell Buckett, who has also previously played for the Sunshine Coast.

EASTS TIGERS v WYYNUM MANLY SEAGULLS

In a rivalry that just keeps getting bigger – the Easts Tigers and Wynnum Manly Seagulls will meet for the third time in four weeks – but this weekend the stakes could not be higher.

The winner will progress to next week’s grand final where they will challenge the Northern Pride for the silverware.

Of the three matches played so far this year, the Seagulls have won two – with Easts victory coming in the qualifying final.

Last week, the Tigers lost 8-7 to the Pride in a tense, if messy, thriller; while the Seagulls mounted a spirited comeback to down the Jets 34-22 in one of the games of the year.

This week, the Tigers will see Jacob Fauid return to partner Cody Walker in the halves, while Tommy Butterfield will slot back into the No.9 jersey after serving a one-match suspension.

Joel Romelo has also been included on the bench. Liam Tyson, Geoff Holcombe and Liufau Hala will this week play in the Easts FOGS Cup team who take on the Redcliffe Dolphins in the preliminary final.

Wynnum Manly suffered a big blow in their match against the Jets, with five-eighth Ben Cronin stretchered off the field with a suspected ACL injury.

FOGS Cup halfback Chris Green has been named in his place, but Bronco Jordan Kahu is considered the more likely replacement.

In a statistic that highlights just how important he has been to the success of the team, Easts’ loss to Pride last week was their first with Cameron Munster playing this year – they have won 12/13 when he has played and 5/13 when he hasn't.
