IPSWICH JETS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES

Ipswich Jets fans will be eager to see whether Queensland Residents stars Keiron Lander and Rod Griffin back up after Wednesday night’s representative match at Suncorp Stadium.

Lander led the Residents to a 24-16 victory over NSW, but his focus will now return to Ipswich’s promising campaign in the Intrust Super Cup.

Souths Logan also had two Queensland representatives in Kurt Baptiste and Luke Page in the maroon.

Baptiste has been named to play for the Canberra Raiders, but Page is set to turn out for the Magpies in their must-win match against the Jets.

Souths have lost a string of tight games this year – and another loss here would almost certainly rule them out of finals contention.

Ipswich holds down outright fifth spot and will be desperate to put in a strong performance at home after losing their last two matches at the North Ipswich Reserve.

The clash will carry extra meaning, with the local community uniting for the Indigenous Appreciation Day match.

Souths Logan have won only one of the past five games between these two sides, although there has been a draw.

Our weekly tipster Ben ‘Dobbo’ Dobbin from Triple M is taking a sabbatical. He’ll return bigger and better next week!

MACKAY CUTTERS v BURLEIGH BEARS

Stadium Mackay on Saturday, July 12 – 6pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Mackay 7 Burleigh 5 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #MCvBEARS

This importance of this game cannot be stressed enough. With eight rounds to play before the finals, the pressure is on both camps to deliver the two competition points.

Burleigh currently sits in seventh spot, five points adrift of the fifth-placed Ipswich Jets.

Defending premiers Mackay are a further point behind the Bears, but have momentum on their side after stringing together three-straight victories over Wynnum Manly, PNG Hunters and Norths Devils.

The battle of the two fullbacks should provide a fascinating spectacle for fans at Stadium Mackay.

Burleigh’s man at the back is Henare Wells, who produced a stunning performance for the Queensland Residents on Wednesday night.

Wells pulled off two try-saving tackles at crucial stages in each half. He will now need to make an impact with the Bears, which is something he has done all season with 18 tries to his name.

After making his NRL debut for the Cowboys, Zac Santo has been named in the No. 1 jersey for the Cutters on Saturday night.

He will relish the opportunity to return the ball from the back again after a surprise appearance for the Cowboys in the unfamiliar hooking role.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

Stockland Stadium on Saturday, July 12 - 4pm
Referee: Nick Morel
Head to Head: Redcliffe 7 Sunshine Coast 4
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #SCFvPHINS

Will this finally be the Sunshine Coast’s day?

Falcons fans have every reason to be optimistic after a stirring last-start performance against finals contenders the Ipswich Jets.

Sunshine Coast took a surprise 2-0 lead into half-time but dominated possession and field position and should have led by more at the break.

The second half wasn’t as kind to them though, with the Jets answering with a converted try and two penalty goals to win a stop-start encounter 10-2.

The feeling amongst most keen Intrust Super Cup followers is that a breakthrough win is just around the corner.

Redcliffe will be doing everything in its power to ensure it is not this weekend though after suffering four losses in a succession.

Interestingly, the proud club has never lost five matches in a row since the inception of the Queensland Cup in 1996.

A fifth-straight loss would almost certainly end the Dolphins prospects of playing finals football under first year head coach Troy Lindsay, who has made positional changes due to injury and suspension.

Marty Hatfield returns to the centres after playing on the wing, Joe Bradley moves from centre to lock and Sarafu Fatiaki from the bench to second row.

For the Sunshine Coast, Jay Lobwein starts at halfback following a leg injury to David Oakes.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS v PNG HUNTERS

Piggabeen Sports on Sunday, July 13 – 2pm
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head to Head: PNG 1 Tweed 0
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #THSvPNG
Live stream: http://www.qrl.com.au/interactive/live-stream.html

The PNG Hunters will arrive at Piggabeen this Sunday hoping to become the first team to defeat the Seagulls since round 7 – when they themselves posted a 36-26 victory.

Tweed have attributed their experience at Kokopo with bringing the team together; helping to spark their current 10-game unbeaten run.

This will be an important game for the Hunters who have slipped out of the competition’s top five with three successive losses.

In contrast – the Seagulls have a share of second spot following their recent strong run.

In team changes – Cody Nelson has been named but will not play.

Luke Dumas replaces Albert Kelly (Gold Coast Titans) in the centres while Sam Irwin and Caleb Binge are in the injury ward with Sam Saville and Cory Blair the new editions in the side.

This has also caused some positional changes, with Tom Merritt slotting in a fullback for Jamal Fogarty who will start at five-eighth.

For the Hunters – there have also been positional changes with captain Israel Eliab shifted to fullback and Adex Wera moved to the centres.

Esau Siune, Joe Bruno and Tiger Emere have been ruled out with injury. The new names on an extended bench are Albert Patak, Timothy Lomai and Thompson Teteh.

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v CQ CAPRAS

Ron Stark Oval, Stradbroke Island on Sunday, July 13 – 2.10pm* (Live on Channel 9 / NBN / WIN)
Referee: Liam Kennedy
Head to Head: Central 26 def Wynnum 18
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #WYNvCQC

The Wynnum Manly Seagulls have taken their home game across the water to North Stradbroke Island and will play the CQ Capras in their inaugural Indigenous Recognition game.

The event will acknowledge the Quandamooka People and also the club’s past Indigenous greats like Lionel Morgan.

The Capras have also embraced the spirit of the event and will recognise the contribution Indigenous people have made to their club by wearing specially designed jerseys for the match.

Local Indigenous artist and rugby league identity James Waterton is responsible for the unique jersey design.

The Capras will raffle off one of the jerseys (signed by players) at their next home game against Ipswich on July 19.

On the field, the Central Queensland side will be keen to bring their winning form from their last game where they recorded a 19-18 result over Burleigh.

There has been one change, with youngster Clint Mooney in on the bench for Ben Hauff.

The Seagulls have named an unchanged 17 from their round 18 triumph over Souths Logan, including fullback Daniel Ogden – who is now the outright 10th all-time Cup try scorer with 87.

Gulls forward John Te Reo (WM/Too/Asp) will also pull on the boots for his 150[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game.

NORTHS DEVILS v EASTS TIGERS

Bishop Park on Sunday, July 13 - 3pm
Referee: Rob Gallacher
Head to Head: Norths 20 Easts 17 Drawn 2
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #DEVILSvTIGES
Live stream: Tiger TV with Troy Robbins and Mike Higgison http://tigertv.net/

Having been touted as a team to watch all season – the Tigers have hit upon some striking form in recent weeks – heading out on two tough roads trips and coming back with the spoils.

After knocking over the PNG Hunters at Kokopo in round 17, Easts had a bye before again impressing with their win over the top-of-the-table Pride in their round 7 catch up game in Mareeba last weekend.

Norths however have now lost five games in a row, and will be hoping their recent form against the Tigers holds true, with the Devils winning three of the past four games.

There have been extensive changes to their line-up for this game, with Shaun Carney replacing youngster Adrian Henley at fullback, while Joel Bailey is in for BJ Munns at centre and Kainga Turner comes in for Keiran English.

On the bench, Josh Jaggle and Byron Creighton come in for Jamie Muller and Lachlan Maranta.

For the Tigers, Kenny Bromwich, Tim Glasby and Joel Romelo have been named in an extended Storm side with Shane Neumann (centre) and Queensland Residents players Dane Hogan and Felise Kaufusi named to return.

Hogan however is unlikely to play after suffering an injury in Wednesday night’s representative match.

Northern Pride – bye

Falcons end 36-match losing streak

By Matt Harris, Queensland Correspondent
NRL.com
8:00am Mon 14th July, 2014

The drought has finally broken.

Having suffered through the longest losing streak in Queensland Rugby League history, the perseverance of the Sunshine Coast Falcons has finally paid off.

The proud club brought an end to a 36-match losing streak with a thrilling 26-24 win over the Redcliffe Dolphins in front of a raucous home crowd on Saturday night in Round 19 of the Intrust Super Cup.

The Falcons had not tasted victory in almost 2900 minutes of football and despite some close contests in recent weeks against the Northern Pride and Ipswich Jets were finally able to snare their first win of the season against the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Few wins all season will be celebrated quite like the Falcons' on Saturday night who on Tuesday will cap a momentous week when they announce a new alignment with an NRL club from the 2015 season.

While the two-point defeat has the Dolphins' finals hopes hanging by a thread after they slumped to their fifth successive defeat, the game belonged to the Falcons as they took advantage of another ordinary display by Troy Lindsay's Dolphins.

Trailing 12-10 at half-time, three straight tries after the break by the Falcons had the home side in the box seat and daring to dream of an elusive victory as they led 26-12 heading into the last 20 minutes.

The Dolphins mounted a late surge inside the final 15 minutes with tries to Queensland Residents' centre Aaron Whitchurch and a brilliant solo effort to nippy halfback Adrian Davis but it wasn't enough as the Falcons held on for a five-tries-to-four victory.

The Falcons started the first half brightly with a try in the corner to winger Paul McKewin that took the hosts out to a 4-0 lead in the 10th minute.

The game settled down into a sustained rhythm for an extended period until constant pressure on the Falcons' defensive line resulted in a try to Redcliffe hooker Hayden Hansen from a scrum play 10 metres out from the line.

Davis slotted the conversion to hand the Dolphins a 6-4 lead after 27 minutes.

The Falcons scrambled well in defence and looked like holding the Dolphins out until Davis fended off an attempted tackle to slice his way through the Falcons' defensive line and score next to the posts to make it 12-4 in the 35th minute.

On the stroke of half-time the Falcons responded with a try to Rueben Baillie after he crashed over from close range with skipper Ryan Hansen adding the extras to see the Falcons only trail by two heading into the break.

The home side were first to strike five minutes into the second half when Jay Lobwein rolled a grubber kick in the direction of centre Rowan Klein with Hansen adding the extras to hand the Falcons the lead again at 16-12.

That lead soon extended moments later as in the very next set Klein's twin brother, Callum, crossed on the opposite side of the field after the Falcons steamrolled their way downfield with consummate ease.

It got even better for Sunshine Coast in the 59th minute when five-eighth Brett Doherty broke through the Dolphins' defensive line 25 metres out and dished off to an unmarked fullback Sam Wright to score under the sticks, taking the score out to 26-12.

The desperate Dolphins mounted a late surge inside the dying minutes which resulted in a second try to Davis.

The electrifying halfback collected his own chip kick on the 40-metre line and dashed down the sideline to score, setting the game up for a nail-biting finish with the score reading 26-24 with three left on the clock.

Redcliffe threw the Steeden around in frantic fashion in their last two sets before full-time but couldn’t crack the determined Falcons who held on for a memorable victory.

As the siren sounded the Sunshine Coast players embraced each other in emotional scenes before singing the team song on the halfway line for the first time since Round 3, 2013.

Sunshine Coast Falcons - 26 (Paul McKewin, Rueben Baillie, Sam Wright, Callum Klein, Rowen Klein tries; Ryan Hansen 3 goals)

Defeated

Redcliffe Dolphins - 24 (Adrian Davis 2, Hayden Hansen, Aaron Whitchurch tries; Adrian Davis 4 goals)

PNG HUNTERS v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS

Kalabond Oval, Kokopo on Saturday, July 19 – 2.30pm
Referee: Tyson Brough
Head to Head: PNG 1 Sunshine Coast 0

Fresh from breaking their 36 game losing streak, the Sunshine Coast will head to Papua New Guinea in search of back-to-back wins.

The Falcons held off a determined finish from the Redcliffe Dolphins to record a thrilling 26-24 victory last Saturday and the news got even better during the week when the club announced a new partnership with the Melbourne Storm.

Glen Dreger’s Falcons will meet a desperate Hunters outfit which has dropped to seventh after four-straight losses.

Noted try scorer Thompson Teteh returns to the Hunters starting side this weekend, partnering Jason Tali in the centres with Noel Zemming dropping back to a utility role on the bench.

Saturday’s match is the first of four-straight home games for the Hunters who will look to use the favourable run home as a springboard into the finals.

Ben ‘Dobbo’ Dobbin (Triple M) says:

Last week the Hunters were taught a rugby league lesson at the hands of the Tweed.

The Sunshine Coast had their first win in nearly two years and on top of that have done a deal with Melbourne Storm to be a feeder club.

While the Sunny Coast have started planning for 2015, the Hunters simply must win. On that alone the Hunters to just get home in a tight one.

CQ CAPRAS v IPSWICH JETS

Browne Park on Saturday, July 19 – 6pm
Referee: Liam Kennedy
Head to Head: Ipswich 22 Central 11 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #CQCvJETS
Live Call: http://www.spreaker.com/user/caprasnation2014

Luck seemed to desert the Central Queensland Capras in last weekend’s 40-10 loss to the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

In a remarkable start, the Capras’ opening kick-off bounced off the cross bar and went out on the full.

It resulted in a penalty on the half-way line to the Seagulls, who were good enough to capitalise and put two quick tries on at the other end of the field.

Capras coach Jason Hetherington will be hoping for a much better start on Saturday as his team looks to claim another big scalp at Browne Park.

Ian Webster kicked a last gasp field goal to clinch a 19-18 victory for the Capras in their last home match against Burleigh.

Ipswich is under some pressure to perform in this match after a heartbreaking 42-40 loss to the Souths Logan Magpies last weekend.

The Jets did fight back from a 40-12 deficit to nearly snatch a win late in the game, but their opening 55 minutes didn’t impress local fans. Co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker will be aiming for their 50[SUP]th[/SUP] career win.

‘Dobbo’ says:

Ipswich’s opening 20 minutes last week will probably go down as their worst this season!

But for the Jets to level the game from 30 points behind with a minute to go showed how dangerous they can be when they get it right.

Martin Kennedy showed in his second stint why he is such a good player.

A danger game for the Jets who have high hopes of giving the title a shake.

The Capras had no luck over at Stradbroke Island, but they enjoyed the experience and will want a good showing at home.

MACKAY CUTTERS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES

Stadium Mackay on Saturday, July 19 - 6pm
Referee: Peter Gough
Head to Head: Souths Logan 10 Mackay 3
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #MCvSLM

The Souths Logan Magpies snapped an alarming away record when they recorded their first win on the road in six games last Saturday.

It took a penalty goal after the siren though for the Magpies to finally seal that win and now they head to Mackay in search of another vital two competition points.

The Round 20 clash is virtually a must-win game for both teams as they attempt to keep touch with the top five in their quest for finals action in September.

Magpies second-rower Leon Panapa and fullback Jordan Rapana tormented the Jets last weekend and the duo again loom as pivotal players for Souths Logan.

The Magpies have won their last three games against Mackay, including a 42-22 victory earlier this year in Round 12.

On the milestone front, Souths back-rower Darcy Wright will play his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup match in the black and white.

Mackay this week announced some positive news, with the launch of its Academy development program for junior players in the district.

‘Dobbo’ says:

When it clicks at the Magpies boy oh boy it clicks. Last week the first half of footy they played against the Jets was near perfect.

Luke Page, the strong front rower with the worst haircut in the Cup, was outstanding and really sent a clear message to Raiders coach Ricky Stuart who was in the stand.

Jordan Rapana was fantastic at the back and kicked a clutch goal after full time to seal the win. Will do a job on the Cutters.

EASTS TIGERS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

Langlands Park on Sunday, July 20 – 2pm* (Live on Channel 9/WIN/NBN)
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head to Head: Redcliffe 24 Easts 14 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #TIGESvPHINS
Live call: http://tigertv.net/tigeronair/

Easts Tigers received mixed news at the judiciary last night ahead of Sunday’s Channel 9 match against the Redcliffe Dolphins at Langlands Park.

Hooker Tom Butterfield is free to play after being found not guilty of a careless high tackle and taking an early plea to a dangerous throw charge.

The news wasn’t so good for centre Donald Malone (careless high tackle Grade 3) and lock Jacob Ling (dangerous throw Grade 2) with both players suspended for two matches.

However, the Tigers won’t lack any star power on Sunday, with as many as eight Melbourne Storm players likely to be in their 17.

This Storm contingent may also include Cody Walker, with the classy five-eighth rumoured to be in line to return from a hamstring injury.

This match will effectively be Redcliffe’s last throw of the dice with the Dolphins needing to win to be any chance of figuring in the Intrust Super Cup semi-finals.

In a bid to spark his team into action after losing five-straight games for the first time in the club’s Cup history, Dolphins coach Troy Lindsay has made positional changes.

Halfback Adrian Davis shifts to fullback with Oliver Regan moving to the wing and Marty Hatfield switching back to his regular centre position.

Bronco Cameron Cullen will return to the halves where he starred for the Dolphins last season.

‘Dobbo’ says:

The Tigers are really humming. They currently sit in second and Cameron Munster is in rare form as well with three tries last weekend.

On the other hand, 2014 will go down as a year of near misses and unwanted records for the Dolphins.

One record that they won’t want to remember is the fact they were the team that the Sunny Coast beat to break their drought.

It had to be someone! Tigers will be far too strong in this one.

NORTHERN PRIDE v NORTHS DEVILS

Barlow Park on Sunday, July 20 - 2pm
Referee: Tim Rutherford
Head to Head: Pride 12 Norths 2 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PRIDEvDEVILS
Stream: Pride Live https://www.facebook.com/northernpriderugbyleague

Classy Norths Devils fullback Shaun Carney will play his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] match in the Intrust Super Cup this weekend.

A former Tweed Heads flyer, Carney has scored eight tries in his first season with the Bishop Park club.

After a promising start to the season, the Devils have lost six in a row and must now beat the Pride on their home turf to keep their fading finals hopes alive.

Norths have won only one of their last nine games against the Pride, although they did push the northern heavyweights all the way in a 24-22 loss in Round 6 this year.

The Pride’s four Queensland Residents stars – Javid Bowen, Shaun Nona, Blake Leary and Davin Crampton – return for the competition leaders after sitting out the catch up game against Easts.

Nona and Leary were outstanding for the Residents and will now look to carry that form into the concluding stages of the regular Intrust Super Cup season.

‘Dobbo’ says:

The Pride currently sit first on the table and will be feeling fresh after the weekend off for the bye.

The Devils were really upset with last week’s tight loss. Look for late inclusions Jarrod Wallace and Francis Molo to prove a real handful.

Wallace is a potential super star of the game and is getting better with age.

The Pride have been by far the best team all year and are still hurting from their soft exit from last year’s comp .

That won’t happen again this year.

Northern Pride by 16.

BURLEIGH BEARS v WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS

Pizzey Park on Sunday, July 20 - 2pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Burleigh 16 Wynnum 14 Drawn 3
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #BEARSvWYN
Live call - Preview from 1.30pm: http://www.spreaker.com/user/wynnumseagulls2014

A heavy mid-season injury toll will test the resolve of the Burleigh Bears in Sunday’s crucial Intrust Super Cup match against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at Pizzey Park.

But it will still take a brave person to tip against a Burleigh team determined to honour the memory of one of the club’s favourite sons.

The successful team will clinch the important two competition points and lift the Adam Watene (Cook) Memorial Trophy.

History suggests the Bears will be hard to topple, with the Pizzey Park club having won four of the past five memorial matches.

Adam was an immensely popular figure whose career took off with the Bears, the club he played for on 83 occasions.

He also played 22 games for the Seagulls, but his crowning moment came in the 2004 Queensland Cup season when he lifted the premiership trophy with Burleigh following their extra-time win over Easts.

Adam passed away suddenly in 2008 in the UK, at the age of 31, leaving behind his wife Moana and two children Arana and Ena, who will lead the players onto the field on Sunday.

The team that takes the field for Burleigh won’t include forwards Chris Kitching (hamstring) and Kyle McConnell (shoulder), with the pair joining Matt Keating, Ryley Jacks, Nafe Seluini and Matt Beddow on the sideline.

Seluini is edging closer to a comeback from a shoulder problem, but the other players may not return for Burleigh this year. Sunday’s match will be Sam Meskell’s 50[SUP]th[/SUP]Intrust Super Cup game for Burleigh.

‘Dobbo’ says:

4 v 6with both sides desperate for a win. Winning is a great feeling and last week both teams had solid victories.

Stephen Coombe, the former Under 20 Broncos captain, is playing great football in the second half of this season.

I’m really happy to see that the Wynnum super coach is now in a full time role at the club and this can only make Wynnum stronger.

Burleigh must win to stay in the finals hunt and ‘Disco’ Jimmy Lenihan will be keen to get back-to-back wins.

Expansion bid ready to go in 2015

By Steven Ross, North Queensland Correspondent
NRL.com
12:20pm Fri 25th July, 2014

The city of Townsville could be just days away from announcing its second rugby league franchise, with final consideration being given by the NRL that could see the Townsville and Districts Blackhawks enter the Intrust Super Cup competition in 2015.

An announcement on the bid, led by Brothers Leagues Club Townsville, is expected sometime in the coming week after the NRL confirmed it is close to finalising its review of a proposal requesting additional funding for the bid.

Brothers Leagues Club Townsville CEO Justin Wilkins says every possible box has been ticked and they are currently in the last stages of negotiation with the NRL, which is the final step in securing the license to become the competition's 14th team.

"The Queensland Rugby League has accepted us into the competition in 2015, however it is dependent on us receiving additional funding through the NRL for an expansion team to come in; so that's our only hold-up at this stage.

"We had been advised that we should have an answer by the end of July," Wilkins told NRL.com.

"The club has been working behind the scenes and has already started putting plans in place as though the bid were to be successful.

"We have a number of sponsors ready to go if we do get in, and it's surprising the number of sponsors that are keen to jump on board as soon as we are given the nod.

"We're also working on uniforms and have been doing strength and conditioning training with squads all over town, and that has been happening for the last couple of months."

With North Queensland Cowboys feeder teams currently in Cairns (Northern Pride) and Mackay (Cutters), the expansion outfit will become a third channel for the NRL club, which will be able to tap into a larger local talent pool as a result of improved pathways for Townsville juniors.

Cowboys CEO Peter Jourdain is fully supportive of the bid, saying that it is a smart investment in the growth of aspiring professionals in the region.

"An Intrust Super Cup team in Townsville really makes sense.

"I've counted that we have about 70 players that come through the Cowboys junior system in North Queensland that are playing elsewhere in competitions, whether it's other NRL clubs or in the New South Wales Cup or other Intrust Super Cup teams.

"So we're producing the players and I think it just makes the pathways a lot clearer for those coming through," Jourdain said.

"Obviously in North Queensland we have the Pride and the Cutters and they have a natural progression through under-16s and 18s, and they can come into our 20s if they want, or they can go into their own Intrust Super League teams.

"With the current situation in Townsville, there's a little less choice.

"They come through the 16s, 18s and if they don't make our 20s or higher they will have to go out of town to Cairns or Mackay to progress through so I think it makes sense."

With an emphasis on creating the best possible environment for the development of rugby league players, Jourdain says this is a major improvement in the system, and stressed the need for the Cowboys to maintain involvement in the broader North Queensland area.

"We are and have to be a North Queensland club, so keeping in touch with the whole region is vital," he said.

"It means that we're investing more to grow our academies in centres like Cairns, Mackay and Rockhampton.

"It's a mechanism where those kids can stay in their home environments until they have all finished school and they've all got similar pathways through to the top level if they are good enough."

PNG HUNTERS v BURLEIGH BEARS

Kalabond Oval, Kokopo on Saturday, July 26 – 2.30pm
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head to Head: Burleigh 1 PNG 0
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PNGvBEARS

The Hunters were given a huge scare by the Sunshine Coast Falcons last weekend before escaping with a 25-24 victory at Kalabond Oval.

It took a last-gasp field goal for the Hunters to see off a gallant Falcons outfit and PNG coach Michael Marum will be hoping for a much smoother ride on Saturday when they shape up against the Burleigh Bears.

The outcome of the Round 21 match is crucial to the semi-final prospects of both clubs who must finish with a flurry of wins to force their way into the top five.

PNG sits in sixth place on 23 competition points (three behind fifth-placed Ipswich) with the Bears two points adrift of the Hunters following last weekend’s 28-10 loss to the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Marum has retained the same starting side that snuck over the line against the Falcons courtesy of Israel Eliab’s late field goal.

Burleigh coach Jim Lehihan has named Henare Wells, Kyle McConnell and Chris Kitching to return, but back-rower James Dunley (shoulder charge) and halfback Tyler Chadburn (offensive language) won’t be on the flight to PNG after being suspended for one match each by the QRL judiciary.

Ben ‘Dobbo’ Dobbin (Triple M) says:

Well, the Hunters were very lucky their captain Israel Eliab stepped up last weekend.

He was the difference against a very spirited Sunny Coast team. This weekend is another clutch game for the Hunters.

Burleigh were outplayed by Wynnum last week and if they are to have any chance of being a premiership threat they need to win this weekend.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS v CQ CAPRAS

Piggabeen Sports on Sunday, July 27 – 2pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Tweed 16 Central 6 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #THSvCQC

The CQ Capras face a tough road trip this weekend when they travel to Piggabeen to take on the high-flying Tweed Heads.

The Seagulls have gone 11 games without a loss and in their most recent game before last weekend’s bye – they went on an early attacking spree against the PNG Hunters in their 60-28 win.

The Capras however are coming off a 34-14 loss against the Jets, where they let an early 4-0 lead slip with some poor handling.

There are many factors stacked against the Capras this weekend, with Tweed having won the past seven games between these two sides. Adding to this, the Capras’ only win at Piggabeen came back in 2003.

In team news for the visitors, the Capras have made a number of late changes to the team named on Tuesday due to injury concerns.

Three players – Rajan Opetaia-Halls, Mitch Hallinan and Garrett Field – are set to make their debuts for the club on Sunday.

Named at prop, this will be the 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game for Peter Gallen, who has previously played for the Sunshine Coast.

For the Seagulls, Sam Irwin returns from injury into the halves, while Cody Nelson is back from suspension and has been named in the back row.

‘Dobbo’ says:

CQ really played tough at home against the Jets last weekend. It is super important for them to really turn up against Tweed this weekend or it could be a half century.

The Tweed are fresh from a bye and ready to rumble, while the end of the season can’t come quick enough for the Capras.

Effort has never been an issue from the men of CQ but the travel and injuries have played a huge toll on their 2014 campaign.

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v NORTHS DEVILS

Davies Park on Sunday, July 27 - 2pm* (Live on Channel 9/WIN/NBN)
Referee: Nick Morel
Head to Head: Norths 23 Souths Logan 13
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #SLMvDEVILS

The Magpies and Devils will admit to having underperformed so far this season – and both will look at this as a make or break game for their season.

Last weekend, the Magpies got out to an early 16-0 lead, but were eventually overtaken to lose to the Cutters, while the Devils were comprehensively outplayed by the Pride.

Both sides also must win all their remaining games this season if they are to be in contention for finals football – and even then it will be extremely difficult given the tightness at the top of the ladder.

In team news, half Todd Murphy returns for the Devils and will skipper the team in the absence of Brendon Gibb, who injured his leg in the loss to the Pride. Patrick McPherson has been named to take his place in the front row.

Jack Reed may return to the Broncos line-up, while Kainga Turner has been named at centre. For Souths, forward Rez Phillips will sit out the next two matches after pleading guilty to a Grade 2 shoulder charge.

This match at Davies Park will also be the 100[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game for Magpies prop Andrew Edwards, who has played all his games for the West End club.

‘Dobbo’ says:

Norths season has gone from bad to worse in the last month and having 50 put on them last week won’t be helping their mindset.

Souths were disappointing last week but Luke Bateman, who had his first run on with the Magpies, was fantastic.

Two tries and a super star in the making! The Magpies are a good footy team and will look to get back in the winners’ circle this week.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v MACKAY CUTTERS

Dolphin Oval on Sunday, July 27 – 2pm
Referee: Robert Gallacher
Head to Head: Redcliffe 6 Mackay 6 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PHINSvMC

Redcliffe Dolphins winger Liam Georgetown will run out for this 150[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup match for the club at Dolphin Oval on Sunday, joining an esteemed group of Redcliffe greats to have reached the milestone.

Current coach Troy Lindsay, Michael Roberts, Danny Burke and Grant Flugge all surpassed 150 games for the club.

Georgetown has already scored more tries and points than any other Redcliffe player in Cup history, and he would dearly love to add to his tally this weekend.

Now out of finals contention, the Dolphins will be playing for pride after a sixth loss in a row last weekend.

The heavy 52-16 defeat came at the hands of the Easts Tigers, who ran in nine tries to demolish the Dolphins.

Mackay will look to inflict more pain on the Phins and the recent form of the defending premiers suggests another win is likely for the rejuvenated Cutters.

With four wins from their past five matches, the Cutters remain an outside chance of forcing their way into the semi-finals.

Coach Kim Williams is calling for a more intense start from the Cutters, who conceded the opening 16 points against Souths Logan last weekend before hitting back to win 24-22.

‘Dobbo’ says:

Mackay had a great win last weekend which still gives them a faint hope. Redcliffe were thumped by Easts in what would have to be their worst loss of the season.

Hard one to pick, but with Redcliffe looking for redemption in front of their home crowd, it might be enough to get the Dolphins back on track.

Will Anthony Griffin be brought back to get the Dolphins firing in 2015?

Only time will tell.

EASTS TIGERS v IPSWICH JETS

Langlands Park on Sunday, July 27 - 2pm
Referee: Tim Rutherford
Head to Head: Easts 19 Ipswich 17 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #TIGESvJETS
Live stream: TigerTV http://tigertv.net/tigertv-live/

After his electric performance for Easts last weekend, Ipswich Jets fans will be relieved that boom Melbourne Storm fullback Cameron Munster won’t be lining up against their side at Langlands Park on Sunday.

Munster has been named to play for the Storm’s NYC Under 20s team instead of the Tigers, who thrashed Redcliffe 52-16.

Munster scored two tries, ran the ball 23 times for a total of 185m, made two line breaks and 15 tackle busts to claim the XXXX man of match honours.

Easts have named Eddie Tautali as the replacement for Munster at fullback.

Easts coach Craig Ingebrigtsen is sweating on a final fitness report on 2013 Courier Mail medallist Cody Walker, who hopes to make his long-awaited comeback from a hamstring injury against the Jets.

The Tigers have had the wood on the Jets in recent times, having only lost once to Ipswich in their past seven matches.

In their first encounter earlier this year, big prop Mitch Garbutt inspired Easts to a 22-12 victory at the North Ipswich Reserve.

‘Dobbo’ says:

Match of the round! The fact that the Tigers have a number of ex-Jets on board this year does give this game plenty of spice.

The Jets were also comprehensively beaten by the Tigers when they met earlier in the year.

This will be a great game to watch as the Tigers are one of the competition favourites and have flexed their muscle in the last month.

Daniel Vidot and Martin Kennedy will really help the Jets.

Ipswich Jets by 6.

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v NORTHERN PRIDE

BMD Kougari Oval on Sunday, July 27 - 3pm
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head to Head: Pride 8 Wynnum 7
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #WYNvPRIDE
Listen: http://www.spreaker.com/user/wynnumseagulls2014

What a cracking game this should be! The top-of-the-table Pride will travel to BMD Kougari Oval to face a Wynnum Manly side who have been quietly going about their business to hold a strong footing in the top five.

They have won their past five matches in a row – including last weekend’s fiery 28-10 win over Burleigh.

The Pride were big 52-18 winners over Norths in round 20 – with Blake Leary and Tyrone McCarthy both scoring doubles.

Despite the result, coach Jason Demetriou has called for more from his interchange players and this week has added Tom Hancock to an extended bench.

For Wynnum, forward Chris McLean comes onto the bench, while Tanu Wulf will start in place of David Stagg.

This will also be the 100[SUP]th[/SUP] match for Seagulls second rower Jon Grieve, who has also played with the Sunshine Coast in the past, winning the premiership with them in 2009.

The Seagulls have a strong home record this year and have won nine of their 10 games at BMD Kougari Oval. This weekend the club are also offering a special deal to their junior club affiliates.

For every junior player that wears their club colours, parents will receive half-price admission ($5).

‘Dobbo’ says:

The Pride are taking the comp by storm at the moment, but Wynnum are the quiet achievers.

Having Jake Granville back this week will help and playing at home will make a difference – but how do you stop the Pride?

They have strengths all around the paddock.

Hard to pick, but I can’t see them losing this weekend.

PNG HUNTERS v NORTHS DEVILS

Kalabond Oval, Kokopo on Saturday, August 2 – 2.30pm
Referee: Nick Morel
Head to Head: Norths 1 PNG 0
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PNGvDEVILS

The PNG Hunters will take an unchanged starting team into the Round 22 match against the Devils.

There is however one change to an extended bench, with coach Michael Marum adding Lawrence Tu’u to his squad for a match the Hunters simply must win to stay on course for a finals berth in their debut season.

PNG currently sits three points behind Wynnum Manly Seagulls and the Ipswich Jets, who occupy fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Norths are now out of finals contention and will look to play a spoiling role over the concluding stages of the regular season.

The middle part of the season hasn’t gone to script for the Devils, who have now lost eight in a row, including their last five away games.

However, Devils fans should be encouraged by the team’s eye-catching finish against the Souths Logan Magpies, who conceded three-straight tries before holding on to win 31-24 last weekend.

Ben ‘Dobbo’ Dobbin (Triple M) says:

This could get really ugly if Norths think they are going on a Contiki tour in PNG.

The Hunters are back baby! Gee they were good against Burleigh, putting 56 points on the Bears.

Norths season has really hit a stone wall in the last month and this proud club needs to step up.

The Mackay Cutters will return to the North Ipswich Reserve for the first time since they hoisted the Intrust Super Cup premiership trophy at the ground in September last year.

But this time around, the Cutters are fighting to stay in the finals hunt with the defending premiers having to win all five remaining matches to be a chance.

Despite sitting in eighth spot, the Cutters are one of the form teams of the competition in recent weeks.

But they may have to play this match without centre Chris Ulugia, who is in doubt with an ongoing calf injury.

The versatile Josh Osborne, who scored two tries in last week’s 30-20 win over Redcliffe, is on standby to switch from the back-row to centre should Ulugia be ruled out.

Ipswich have lost their past three home games, mainly due to flimsy defence.

They will need to tighten up that aspect of their game against a dangerous Cutters team featuring attacking weapons Curtis Rona and Anthony Mitchell.

In milestone news, Brendon Marshall plays his 150[SUP]th[/SUP] top grade match for Ipswich and classy hooker Matt Parcell lines up for his 50[SUP]th[/SUP].

‘Dobbo’ says:

Danger game for the mighty Jets who had a fantastic win against a strong Tigers side last Sunday.

This weekend the Jets are back at home and need to keep on winning if they are to be a title threat.

Martin Kennedy played his best game of the season in any grade last weekend, impressing skipper Keiron Lander.

Mackay are last year’s premiers and want to finish the season off strongly, but this won’t be their week.

CQ CAPRAS v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS

Marley Brown Oval on Saturday, August 2 – 7pm
Referee: Liam Kennedy
Head to Head: Central 7 Sunshine Coast 3 Drawn 1
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #CQCvSCF

Capras coach Jason Hetherington has shown faith in the new players he blooded last week in the club's 35-24 loss to the high-flying Tweed Heads Seagulls.

Hetherington was extremely happy with the three debutants – Garrett Field, Rajan Opetaia-Halls and Mitch Hallinan who all looked at home with the step up to Intrust Super Cup footy.

The Sunshine Coast Falcons are fresh from the bye and will be out to make amends after their heavy 36-0 loss to the Capras in Round 10 earlier this year.

But the Falcons have made considerable progress since then, notching their first win of the season against the Redcliffe Dolphins.

They have also pushed competition heavyweights the Northern Pride, Ipswich Jets and Papua New Guinea Hunters until the final siren in that period.

A big crowd is expected at Gladstone’s Marley Brown Oval, with a full day of footy starting with the Under 18 Brothers v Calliope match commencing at 2.15pm.

It will be followed by local Reserve and A Grade fixtures.

‘Dobbo’ says:

Ignore the ladder, this will be a great Intrust Super Cup game.

The Sunny Coast have a spring in their step and now can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

CQ really turned up against the Tweed last weekend and showed plenty of grit.

I can’t pick this game.

NORTHERN PRIDE v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

Barlow Park on Sunday, August 3 – 12.30pm* (Delayed on Channel 9/WIN/NBN from 2pm)
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head to Head: Tweed 9 Pride 5
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PRIDEvTHS

It’s the battle of the big guns with the top-of-the-table Northern Pride hosting the second-placed Tweed Heads in what could be an early indicator of finals football.

Both teams are coming off strong wins and will be looking to stamp their authority on the competition.

The Seagulls have gone 12 games without a loss and interestingly, are the only side with a “winning” record over the Pride.

They have also won five of their past six games against the northerners – however, the Pride’s record at home is formidable.

The Cairns-based side have won their past nine games at this venue, and overall have lost only 13 of 76 Cup games played there.

In team news, despite suffering injuries in their win over Wynnum Manly last weekend, Hezron Murgha, Kyle Feldt and Latu Fifita are all named for the Pride.

Jack Svendsen has also been included in the only change to the squad.

For the Seagulls, Caleb Binge is the only new addition and has been named on an extended bench.

The match will be played as the curtain-raiser to the 3pm NRL match between the Souths Sydney Rabbitohs and Newcastle Knights; with organisers expecting to draw a large crowd to the venue.

‘Dobbo’ says:

How good would it be to be in Cairns to watch this game live! Oh well, we’ll still get to watch it on Channel 9.

This is the match of the round and it could even be match of the year!

I am going for the Pride only because I will attacked by the powers of the Pride if I don’t.

On a side note, the fans have spoken and it was great to see Frank “my hair is so important” Barrett back on the TV as the No.1 sideline eye in the business.

Killing it Frank!

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v EASTS TIGERS

Davies Park on Sunday, August 3 – 2pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Easts 25 Souths Logan 11
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #SLMvTIGES
Live stream: Tiger TV http://tigertv.net/tigertv-live/

Souths Logan kept their finals hopes alive for another week when they held on to beat the Devils last weekend, but face a tough challenge at home when they host Easts.

The Tigers are coming off what many would consider a surprise loss to Ipswich last weekend and will be keen to bounce back against their cross-town rivals.

For this match, fullback Cameron Munster, five-eighth Jacob Fauid, skipper Steven Thorpe, lock Jacob Ling and Richie Kennar are returning to the starting line-up; while Joel Romelo, Dane Chang, Sam Bielefeld and Dwayne Craft are the players to make way.

Eddie Tautali has been shifted to an extended bench. Half Cody Walker – who had his first game back from a (hamstring) injury last weekend – has been named for his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game.

Souths however have only made the one change, with Herschel Gideon named on the bench for Jake Eden.

While the Magpies will be buoyed by their good recent home record, winning their past three games – the Tigers also seem to like Davies Park and have won their past three games here.

The home side will also have a 50 gamer take to the field this weekend in winger Luke Archer (previously with Easts).

‘Dobbo’ says:

Trigger was an angry man last Sunday when his boys were beaten by the Jets.

On the other hand Souths are having a late season run and the man everybody is talking about is Jordan Rapana!

The high flying fullback is dominating every side he comes up against.

Sunday will be a tough one as the Tigers are back to full strength but I don’t think it will stop the might of the Magpies.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS

Dolphin Oval on Sunday, August 3 - 2pm
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head to Head: Redcliffe 25 Wynnum 13 Drawn 2
Twitter: #intrustsupercup #PHINSvWYN
Live call: http://www.spreaker.com/user/wynnumseagulls2014

Wynnum Manly received extra motivation for their game this week, with Courier Mail reporter and QRL columnist Chris Garry writing the side off as premiership contenders.

The Seagulls already had plenty to play for – coming off a loss against the Pride and coming up against the Dolphins for the Herald Cup.

Redcliffe trail Wynnum by six points in the battle for this piece of silverware, which is decided on points aggregate over the two regular season games.

Playing for pride, the Dolphins will have to overcome some recent poor form which has seen them lose seven games in a row.

They have only once before in their history gone eight games without a win – and that included one draw.

This weekend, the Dolphins will welcome the return of Zach Strasser who missed the game against the Cutters last weekend with an ankle injury.

Big forward David Hala has not been named for the Dolphins, while Wynnum Manly’s only change sees Alehana Mara return for Jake Granville (Brisbane Broncos).

This match will also be the last chance for Dolphins fans to see their side play on home soil this season, with their next scheduled home game against Burleigh being taken to the Longreach Showgrounds as part of Country Week.

‘Dobbo’ says:

The Dolphins need a win as much as I need a pork dumpling.

Let’s see if they can turn it around here.

Wynnum currently sit fourth and are doing it well. They will benefit from having Jordan Kahu back and in form.

I can’t see an upset.
