CQ CAPRAS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES

Browne Park on Saturday, March 29 – 6pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Central 17 Souths Logan 16 Drawn 2

Coming off the bye, the Capras will hope the support of their home crowd will help them snare their first win of the season.

In their last match against the Hunters in Kokopo, the Capras were run down 46-14 and coach Jason Hetherington will be looking for a much improved performance from his team.

He has named a 19-man squad which includes Marco Delapena, Reece Baker, Marlon Doak and Peter Gallen who all missed the overseas trip.

Gladstone’s Aaron Hall will keep his place following his strong debut against PNG, while Capras captain Gavin Hiscox has been named to return via the bench after using the bye to fully recover from a groin injury.

Young hooker Tom McKenzie is also named on the bench.

Souths too are coming off a loss and have a few injury concerns going into the match, with Mat Pitman (neck) and Dallas Anderson (knee) yet to prove their fitness.

Changes to the team see Raiders Sam Mataora and Jordan Rapana coming in for Shane Duck and Hershel Gideon.

Capras centre Mitch Zorning has been named on an extended bench and will take part in his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game if he plays.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

Piggabeen Sports on Sunday, March 30 – 2pm
Referee: Peter Gough
Head to Head: Redcliffe 19 Tweed 6

Both Tweed Heads and Redcliffe claimed upset victories last weekend and are set to provide an exciting match-up on Sunday.

Both teams got off to great starts – something they will be keen to do again in this match.

Aaron Zimmerle’s Seagulls are set to welcome back captain Matt King who missed last week’s 32-14 win over the Magpies, while Sam Irwin and Cody Nelson are the other new additions.

Ben Ridge has been named on an extended Titans bench, but may yet return to the team, while Ricardo Parata drops out of the starting side and has been named as 18[SUP]th[/SUP] man.

The Dolphins enjoy a dominant head-to-head record against the Gulls, having won the past five games played.

But like the Tweed, Redcliffe also have changes to their winning team.

Although listed in 18 for the Broncos, David Hala has been named and is expected to play for the Dolphins this weekend, while Cameron Cullen also returns from an ankle injury.

Martin Cordwell and Tim Foster have been omitted, while the in-form Jake Marketo will serve a one-match suspension for a shoulder charge.

TIP: Redcliffe Dolphins by 12

NORTHS DEVILS v MACKAY CUTTERS

Bishop Park on Sunday, March 30 – 2pm* (Live on Channel 9)
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head to Head: Norths 7 Mackay 6

For four weeks in a row, the Norths Devils have finished in front on the scoreboard to earn themselves a share of the Intrust Super Cup competition lead alongside the Northern Pride.

This weekend, Mark Gliddon’s side will welcome both the Channel 9 cameras and the defending premiers Mackay to Bishop Park in a match where a win will equal their record of games without a loss.

They previously went nine games without a loss in 2005 and have now matched that achievement after carrying the momentum from a strong finish to the 2013 season into the opening rounds this year.

The good form of new Devils captain Brendon Gibb has been a key ingredient to their success so far and he currently heads the Courier-Mail Medal leader board after four rounds.

The Cutters recorded their first win for 2014 last weekend in tough conditions in Mackay, beating Wynnum Manly 12-4.

For this match, former Devils player Dan Murphy has been added to an extended bench, while Norths have also made the bare minimum of changes with Jamie Muller into the starting side, moving Dean Sheppard to the bench.

The Nundah club have recent statistics against them however in their quest for five from five, with the Cutters enjoying a golden run against them, winning five of their past six match-ups.

TIP: Norths Devils by 10

EASTS TIGERS v PNG HUNTERS

Langlands Park on Sunday, March 30 – 2pm
Referee: Tim Rutherford
Head to Head: First Game

A capacity crowd is expected at Langlands Park for the Hunters’ first match in Queensland since their thrilling round 1 victory over Redcliffe.

Having played their last three matches at home, the Hunters shouldn’t yet be weighed down by travel-weary legs.

They will, however, meet a team with an imposing home record.

Easts have won their last seven games at Langlands Park, a record coach Craig Ingebrigtsen is fiercely proud of.

Ingebrigtsen will be eager to see improvement from his charges following last weekend’s 24-12 loss to the Dolphins.

The Tigers will go into the round five clash without Donald Malone, who is set to miss a week with a niggling hamstring strain.

Malone’s absence is a blow, but there is no shortage of talent in the backline that includes 2013 Queensland Residents players Jarrod McInally and Cody Walker.

The Tigers are also set to be without Storm forwards Tim Glasby and Mitch Garbutt.

TIP: Easts Tigers by 12

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v BURLEIGH BEARS

BMD Kougari Oval on Sunday, March 30 – 3pm
Referee: Robert Gallacher
Head to Head: Burleigh 16 Wynnum 13 Drawn 3

Burleigh Bears have not won at Kougari Oval since 2009.

But fresh from a stirring come-from-behind victory over the Ipswich Jets, the Bears are in great shape to tackle the tough away trip and the vocal “Chook Pen”.

They have a number of new players in top form, including skilful centre Khan Ahwang who played a starring role against his old club last weekend.

Ahwang scored two tries and booted six goals for a personal haul of 20 points.

However, points could be much harder to come by for Ahwang and both teams this weekend, with heavy conditions expected at Kougari Oval.

The home fans will get to see fullback Daniel Ogden and winger Peter Gubb reach major milestones.

The match is the 100[SUP]th[/SUP] Intrust Super Cup appearance for former Norths flyer Ogden and the 50[SUP]th[/SUP] game in Wynnum Manly colours for the ever reliable Gubb.

This is also Wynnum’s 400[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup game – they have won 206, drawn 18 and lost 175.

TIP: Burleigh Bears by 12

IPSWICH JETS v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS

North Ipswich Reserve, Sunday, March 30 – 3pm
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head to Head: Ipswich 6 Sunshine Coast 3 Drawn 1

He puts his body on the line each and every week, and on Sunday at the North Ipswich Reserve, Jets skipper Keiron Lander will do it for the 100[SUP]th[/SUP] time in the Intrust Super Cup.

Raised in the tiny outback town of Quilpie, Lander’s rugby league journey is an amazing one.

He has previously played for Toowoomba, North Queensland and the Mackay Cutters but has found a home at the Ipswich Jets, where his leadership on and off the field is a shining example for the younger squad members.

Jets fullback Javarn White is also closing in on a century, with Sunday’s match to be his 92[SUP]nd[/SUP] overall game and his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] in the green and white of Ipswich.

The Jets have won their past four games against the Sunshine Coast, but coaches Ben and Shane Walker have enormous respect for rival coach Ivan Henjak and except nothing but a torrid contest on Sunday.

The Falcons have endured a tough start to the 2014 season, but many critics forget the young side have played four teams that currently sit in the top five.

TIP: Ipswich Jets by 14.

NORTHS DEVILS v NORTHERN PRIDE

Callendar Park, Innisfail on Saturday, April 5 - 5pm
Referee: Peter Gough
Head to Head: Pride 11 Norths 2 Drawn 1

Rugby league fans in Innisfail are in for a treat this weekend, with the competition’s two undefeated teams to play in a top-of-the-table clash.

Only the second Intrust Super Cup game played on the Cassowary Coast – this sees the Norths Devils take on the Northern Pride as they attempt to win six straight matches to open the season.

The Pride have won four matches and had a bye last weekend following their round 4 win over the Hunters in Kokopo.

Coach Jason Demetriou gave his team some time off to recover following their strong performance and they will be feeling fresh and hoping to stop the winning momentum of the Devils.

In team news, Norths have named an unchanged 17, with Brad McKee added to an extended bench.

While not officially named – reports have indicated forward Ricky Thorby will be available for the Pride, while Latu Fifita has been added to an extended bench.

In the head-to-head stakes, the Pride enjoy a healthy advantage; with Norths having only won one of the past eight games played between the two teams.

In an added bonus, there will also be a Cairns District Rugby League A Grade game staged, with the Innisfail Leprechauns and Cairns Brothers to face-off at 7pm.

MACKAY CUTTERS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

Stadium Mackay on Saturday, April 5 - 6pm
Referee: Michael Wise
Head to Head: Tweed 6 Mackay 2 Drawn 4

While both teams are desperate to add another win to their tally – don’t be surprised if this one ends in a draw.

The Mackay Cutters and Tweed Heads Seagulls have drawn four times already in 12 games, as figure QRL statistician Brad Tallon says is 10 times the average number of draws per game. Both teams are coming off losses last weekend.

The Cutters were unable to keep up with the Devils in the second half of their round 5 match, while Tweed Heads were left to rue a poor first half against a dominant Redcliffe.

For this match, the home side have made a number of changes to their line-up, with Brent Warr (five-eighth), Tom Rouse (halfback) and Kelvin Nielsen (second row) the new faces in the team.

Captain Tyson Martin moves into the centres, while Doug Hewitt and Dan Murphy have been omitted.

For Tweed Heads, Matt Parata, Oliver Percy and Chris Piper come into the side with Zac Friend, Josh Harvey and Ben Ridge not named.

However, Ridge may yet again play in the team, alongside fellow Titan Ryan James who has been slated to join the Seagulls for this weekend’s match.

TIP: Mackay Cutters by 4 (in a close one)

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v BURLEIGH BEARS

Stockland Stadium on Saturday, April 5 - 6pm
Referee: Tyson Brough
Head to Head: Burleigh 7 Sunshine Coast 3

Both teams will have a point to prove having suffered losses in differing circumstances last weekend.

The Bears will be out to atone for a poor performance which resulted in a 46-6 loss to Wynnum Manly – while the Falcons will hope to build on a promising second half against the Jets.

Down 26-0 at halftime, the Sunshine Coast put in a competitive performance in the back end of the game, scoring 16 points to win the second half.

In team news, Melbourne Under 20 players Max Fesolai, Ellery Tusa, Aaron Teroi and John Filipo have not been named in the Falcons line-up; but some may yet re-join the team.

Maa Ruua is also out with Joe Meninga, Phil Taylor, Callum Klein, David Oakes and Matt Gilliman named in their place.

Burleigh coach Carl Briggs has been forced to make changes following a spiteful match against the Seagulls, with Kyle McConnell and Siuatonga Likiliki both serving one-match bans for striking.

Forward Nick Harrold, who was named, will also serve a one-game suspension for a dangerous throw.

Sam Meskell is also out of the Bears team, with Matt Keating to return, with James Dunley and Dimitri Pelo – who debuted at 17 for Burleigh in 2002 – to play his first Cup game since 2006.

Matt Bell has been named on an extended bench.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v CQ CAPRAS

Dolphin Oval on Sunday, April 6 - 2pm
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head to Head: Redcliffe 26 Central 7 Drawn 1

Brisbane Broncos playmaker Duncan Paia’Aua makes his Intrust Super Cup debut for the Central Queensland Capras in their must-win game against the Dolphins.

A CQ junior, Paia’Aua will make the step up into senior footy from the Broncos NYC ranks.

“Duncan is a phenomenal talent who has played a key role in the great start to the 2014 year for the Broncos NYC side,” Capras operations manager Walson Carlos said.

“We are very excited about what Duncan will bring to our side.”

The Capras have now gone eight games without a victory in a run that stretches back to August last year.

A trip to Dolphin Oval isn’t the place a visiting team wants to go to break its duck, but the Capras can draw confidence from their win and draw against Redcliffe last year.

After a slow start themselves, the Dolphins have hit form with gritty wins over the Easts Tigers and Tweed Heads Seagulls.

The emergence of classy halves pairing Zach Strasser and Adrian Davis has played a key role in the resurgence.

However, Dolphins coach Troy Lindsay will need to find a replacement for Davis after the livewire half was last night suspended for one match for a dangerous throw.

IPSWICH JETS v PNG HUNTERS

North Ipswich Reserve on Sunday, April 6 - 2pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: First game

Former Kumul and current Ipswich Jets forward Rod Griffin goes head to head with his fellow countrymen in Sunday’s clash at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Griffin is in career-best form for the Jets, who will need to be at their very best against a powerful Hunters line up.

The Hunters staged a great fightback to record a 20-20 draw against Easts in what has already been dubbed by many good judges as the game of the season.

The epic end-to-end contest produced some extraordinary rugby league in front of one of the biggest crowds seen at Brisbane’s Langlands Park in years.

With the PNG team’s fan base expanding by the day, Sunday’s match is expected to attract another bumper crowd.

Adding to the appeal of this game is the attacking arsenal of both teams.

Ipswich’s dynamic smaller men, including Wes Conlon, Marmin Barba, Troy O’Sullivan and Matt Parcell, have been posing problems for opposition defences.

Like the Jets, the Hunters can score tries from anywhere on the field, with their ability to off-load and break out of tackles a feature of their play.

Ipswich will be without injured fullback Javarn White, while the Hunters are set to be without strike centre Thompson Teteh.

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS

Davies Park on Sunday, April 6 - 2pm* (Live on Channel 9)
Referee: Tim Rutherford
Head to Head: Wynnum 23 Souths Logan 10 Drawn 1

Any match that pits two talented brothers against each other is always worth the price of admission.

For the first time, Ben Cronin will go up against his younger brother Mitch.

The siblings previously played together at Souths Logan, but Ben has since switched back to Wynnum Manly and is playing some great footy.

Mitch has also made a move, linking with the Canberra Raiders to pursue his NRL dream.

But the young hooker is back with the Magpies for the time being following the re-establishment of their secondary affiliation.

In milestone news, Wynnum Manly hooker Jake Granville plays his 100[SUP]th[/SUP] match for the Seagulls and winger Peter Gubb his 50[SUP]th[/SUP].

Wynnum Manly have won their past four matches against Souths Logan, but the Magpies might just be slight favourites here due to the home ground advantage.

The Seagulls produced their best performance of the season last week, belting Burleigh 46-6 at BMD Kougari Oval.

Bronco David Stagg is poised to turn out for his second game for the Seagulls after being a late addition to the Wynnum team last week.

Pride v Easts postponed

QRL Media

Thu 10th April, 01:02PM

The round 7 Intrust Super Cup match between the Northern Pride and Easts Tigers in Cairns has been postponed due to tropical cyclone Ita.

“We considered all options but the safety and welfare of the players and coaches is our first priority,’’ QRL Competitions Manager Jamie O’Connor said today.

“One of those options was bringing the Northern Pride to Brisbane this weekend, but we felt that it was more important for the players and coaching staff to remain with their families.”

The match will now be played on Sunday, July 6 at Barlow Park in Cairns.

This weekend is a bye round for all other clubs due to the annual Residents match between Queensland and New South Wales on July 9.

PNG HUNTERS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

Kalabond Oval, Kokopo on Saturday, April 12 - 2.30pm
Referee: Rob Gallacher
Head to Head: First match

After two weeks away – the Hunters return home looking to re-establish Kalabond Oval as a ‘graveyard’ for visiting teams following their round 4 defeat by the Northern Pride.

Tweed Heads will be keen to snare an important away victory – and will also aim to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Thompson Teteh returns to a re-shuffled PNG line-up, along with Gonzela Urakusie, Noel Zemming and Adam Korave. Noel Joel, Joe Bruno and Esau Siune have all not been named; while the Hunters will also be without forward Mark Mexico who has signed with the Cronulla Sharks.

The Hunters will miss “Mark the Shark’s” hard running, but will again re-group as they have previously when another NRL club came knocking – that time taking Wellington Albert to the Panthers.

The Seagulls have made multiple changes with five-eighth Beau Henry sitting out the week with a one-match suspension for striking.

Josh Harvey and Chris Piper have also not been named, with Tom Merritt, Cody Nelson and Zac Friend returning to the side.

Interestingly, prop Damien Sironen – who scored Tweed’s first try in last weekend’s 12-8 win over Mackay – is the club’s leading try scorer so far this season, having crossed for four tries in six games.

POSTPONED – NORTHERN PRIDE v EASTS TIGERS

Although there was high anticipation for this match (we had even selected the Northern Pride to be this week’s cover stars for the programme) – Mother Nature has had other plans.

Cyclone Ita is bearing down on the region and the decision was made to postpone the match until July 6. Stay safe North Queensland!

Here is the official QRL statement:

The round 7 Intrust Super Cup match between the Northern Pride and Easts Tigers in Cairns has been postponed due to tropical cyclone Ita.

“These decisions are never easy, we always try to consider all options with the safety and welfare of the clubs our first priority,’’ QRL Competitions Manager Jamie O’Connor said today.

“One of those alternatives was bringing the Northern Pride to Brisbane this weekend, however we felt that it was more important for the players and coaching staff to remain with their families.”

The match will now be played on Sunday, July 6 at Barlow Park in Cairns, a bye round for all other clubs due to the annual Residents match between Queensland and New South Wales on July 9.

CQ CAPRAS v NORTHS DEVILS

Browne Park on Saturday, April 12 - 6pm
Referee: Tim Rutherford
Head to Head: Norths 22 Central 10 Drawn 2

Capras coach Jason Hetherington has rewarded his team for their performance last weekend by naming an unchanged team.

Trailing Redcliffe 16-6 at half-time, they clawed their way back into the game and went on to claim a 16-16 draw.

The Capras held the Dolphins scoreless in the second half in a great defensive display. However, fellow “Baralaba Boy” Corey Oates – who scored a try in the match – has been named on the bench for the Brisbane Broncos and may need to be replaced in the second row.

For Norths, Mark Gliddon too has mostly stayed faithful with his team, with only two changes made to the side who went down 24-22 to the Northern Pride in an exciting match.

Prop Jamie Muller and James Geurtjens are the new additions, while Jarrod Wallace (extended Broncos bench) and Francis Molo have not been named.

The Devils have a strong record against the Capras and have won five of the past six games played, including the last three games at Browne Park.

Norths winger Rogan Dean is currently the competition’s leading try scorer with nine tries from six games and he is well on track to beat Norths’ Cup season try-scoring record of 21 set by Derek Fletcher in 2004.

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS

BMD Kougari Oval on Saturday, April 12 - 7pm
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head to Head: Wynnum 8 Sunshine Coast 2

It was the “Mitchell show” last week with Mitchell Buckett, Mitchell Krause and Mitchell Frei scoring tries in the Seagulls’ come-from-behind win over Souths Logan.

Krause snared a double, with his spectacular long range effort in the 70[SUP]th[/SUP] minute a contender for try of the season.

But this week the focus will be on Buckett, who plays his first match against the Falcons since leaving the Sunshine Coast at the end of 2012.

The big winger/centre was signed by the South Sydney Rabbitohs last year but has returned to the Intrust Super Cup this year with Wynnum Manly.

On the milestone front, key Seagulls halfback Matt Seamark requires 11 points to become the eighth player to score 800 points in Cup history. Ivan Henjak’s Falcons go into this match searching for their first win of the season.

The Falcons put a scare through the Burleigh Bears last week when they scored first through Phil Taylor.

But Burleigh kicked clear in the second half with four tries to post a 30-6 win.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES

Dolphin Oval on Sunday, April 13 - 2pm
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head to Head: Redcliffe 26 Souths Logan 8 Drawn 1

After serving a one match suspension, livewire Redcliffe halfback Adrian Davis comes back into the Dolphins line-up for Sunday’s match against the Souths Logan Magpies.

Davis’ return means Tim Foster slots back into the club’s FOGS Cup team.

The other change to the Dolphins’ 17 sees the return of experienced winger Liam Georgetown, who has notched up 137 first grade games in the red and white.

The try-scoring whiz replaces Brett Coutts on the wing. Souths Logan have reshuffled their line-up, with Grant Cooke and Shane Duck coming into the starting side for David Faamita and Sam Mataora.

The Magpies last week held a good early lead over the Wynnum Manly, only to be run down late in the game by the Seagulls.

While the competition is still in its early days, this is a crucial match for both sides with the Magpies (eight points) in fifth and the Dolphins eighth (seven points).

Redcliffe are undefeated in their last six games against Souths Logan (5 wins, 1 draw); but interestingly Souths Logan won six in a row before that.

BURLEIGH BEARS v MACKAY CUTTERS

Pizzey Park on Sunday, April 13 - 2pm* (Live on Channel 9)
Referee: Chris Butler
Head to Head: Mackay 7 Burleigh 4 Drawn 1

Mackay Cutters enter Sunday’s “must-win” match without skipper Tyson Martin who is serving a one match suspension for striking.

NQ Cowboy John Asiata comes into the starting side for a Cutters outfit which will receive some simple instructions from coach Kim Williams.

“We just need to hang onto the footy,” Williams said.

“Last week we had six incomplete sets in a row during the second half.

“That is the game, Tweed scored off the back of that. We just need to be better with our ball control.”

The Cutters are undefeated in their last four games against Burleigh (3 wins, 1 draw), but the Bears have the home ground advantage and are coming off a strong second-half display against the Sunshine Coast last week.

Burleigh scored 24 unanswered points in the final 40 minutes of their round six match against a committed Falcons team.

Bears centre Khan Ahwang – the competition’s leading points scorer – kicked five goals in that match to take his season tally to 74 points.

CQ CAPRAS v WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS

Marley Brown Oval on Thursday, April 17 – 8pm
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head to Head: Wynnum 25 Central 7 Drawn 2

Central Queensland Capras coach Jason Hetherington and their fans will be hoping a rare Thursday night match brings about a change in fortunes for the club.

The Capras have pushed a number of the Intrust Super Cup’s best teams, but only have a draw to show from their opening six matches.

Hetherington’s team heads into this match boosted by the news that young second-rower Liam Pickersgill has signed a two year contract with the Brisbane Broncos.

“The Broncos contract is a great opportunity for Liam to take his footy to the next level by experiencing an NRL club,” Capras operations manager Walson Carlos said.

“It shows once again that the Capras have a clear pathway for juniors to the NRL which is important.”

Standing in the Capras’ way tonight in Gladstone is a Wynnum Manly team that has won its past five games against the Central Queenslanders.

Jon Buchanan’s Seagulls are one of the competition’s form teams at present, with recent wins over the Burleigh Bears, Souths Logan Magpies and Sunshine Coast Falcons.

IPSWICH JETS v NORTHERN PRIDE

North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday, April 19 – 5pm
Referee: Peter Gough
Head to Head: Pride 8 Ipswich 5 Drawn 1

Having been forced indoors last weekend due to tropical Cyclone Ita, the Northern Pride will look to unleash a storm of their own against the Ipswich Jets on Saturday.

Following a round 5 bye and their postponed match against Easts, the Pride have been restricted to the one hit-out in the past three weeks.

But Pride coach Jason Demetriou is sure to have his players “up” for this match, particularly as the Norths Devils now hold down top spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder.

The Pride have named Cowboys enforcer Ricky Thorby and young flyer Kyle Feldt for the round 8 clash.

Ipswich will be without forward leader Tyson Lofipo, who is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Kurtis Lingwoodock moves into the front-row in Lofipo’s absence, while former Swifts start Josh Cleeland comes into the starting side at five-eighth for Ollie Olds.

Ipswich have won their last four home games, and most interestingly, the past 10 games between these two sides have resulted in nine home team wins and one draw (at Ipswich in 2011).

TIP: Ipswich Jets by 12

MACKAY CUTTERS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

Stadium Mackay on Saturday, April 19 – 6pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Redcliffe 6 Mackay 5 Drawn 1

Mackay’s young forward leader Dan Beasley will sit out this match after receiving a one game suspension for a dangerous throw earlier this week.

Jason Schirnack slots into the front-row in Beasley’s absence.

After yet another tight loss, the Cutters are in danger of losing touch with the top five if they don’t secure the two points here.

They will have to do it without strike centre Curtis Rona, who scored a slashing try in the 22-14 loss to Burleigh last week.

The Queensland Residents centre is set to make his debut for the North Queensland Cowboys in their NRL match against Manly.

Skipper Tyson Martin returns from suspension for the Cutters and will slot into the centres.

Dolphins coach Troy Lindsay has named an unchanged team following their impressive 34-6 victory over Souths Logan.

Key forwards Jake Marketo and James Ackerman remain under injury clouds and have not been named for a Dolphins side which climbed into fifth spot following last week’s win at home.

After a sluggish start, the Dolphins are looking dangerous, particularly with halfback Adrian Davis in electric form.

The Dolphins stretched the Magpies on the flanks last week, with Liam Georgetown and Paul Byrnes netting four tries between them.

EASTS TIGERS v BURLEIGH BEARS

Langlands Park on Sunday, April 20 – 2pm
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head to Head: Burleigh 21 Easts 15 Drawn 2

The Easts Tigers have been on the sideline for two weeks now having sat out round 6 with the bye before their round 7 match against the Northern Pride was postponed due to Cyclone Ita.

Changes to their team since they last took the field in round 5 see the inclusion of backs Hymel Hunt and Donald Malone, while Felise Kaufusi returns to start in the front row.

Foisa Peni is on the bench, while Dwayne Craft, Maeli Seve, Liufau Hala and Richie Kennar (hip) have been omitted.

While the Tigers may be without match time, the Bears should not go into this game lightly, with Easts enjoying a formidable record at home, having won seven of their past eight matches at Langlands Park.

The eighth game was their thrilling 20-20 draw against PNG.

For the Bears, captain Darren Griffiths is unavailable, so Kyle McConnell will start at lock with Louis Fanene to take over the duties as skipper.

Burleigh prop Luke Page has impressed this season and will feature in his 50[SUP]th[/SUP] Cup match overall, having previously played for Ipswich.

In an interesting fact, Bears half Ryley Jacks played a game for Easts earlier in the year before finding a home at the Burleigh club.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v PNG HUNTERS

Stockland Stadium on Sunday, April 20 – 2pm* (Live on Channel 9)
Referee: Robert Gallacher
Head to Head: First game

This Easter Sunday, it is the turn of the Sunshine Coast to host the PNG Hunters and they have scheduled a full day of entertainment for the fans.

As well as three games of football, there will also be a visit from the Easter Bunny for the kids; as well as the staging of the Brisbane Bombers Gift at halftime, with $750 up for grabs for the “quickest man in local league football”.

On the field, the Sunshine Coast will be looking to spring an upset against the popular PNG side, who returned to the winners’ circle with a 36-26 result over Tweed Heads in Kokopo last weekend.

In an entertaining game, where the lead changed four times in the second half, the Hunters were able to claim their fourth win of the season.

Coach Michael Marum has moved Brady Peter onto the bench, with Adam Korave to drop to an extended bench.

Changes for the Falcons see the experienced Brenton Stonier start at lock with James Leavai coming on to the bench.

John Filipo and Max Fesolai have been omitted.

In support of Autism Awareness Month, the club are also encouraging fans to wear something blue – with money raised on the day going to the Treehouse Initiative.
TIP: PNG Hunters 16

NORTHS DEVILS v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES

Bishop Park on Sunday, April 20 – 3pm
Referee: Nick Morel
Head to Head: Norths 23 Souths-Logan 12

Norths returned to their winning ways last weekend while the Magpies again faltered, going down 34-6 to an impressive Redcliffe after being blown away in the first half.

The Devils notched a 38-8 victory in Rockhampton over the CQ Capras, with half Todd Murphy impressing with his all round performance.

Despite their differing results, both coaches have chosen to remain largely faithful to their teams, with minimal changes to either line-up.

For Norths, Sam Foster comes into the halves with Zach Koitka dropping onto an extended bench.

Brisbane Broncos Jarrod Wallace, Lachlan Maranta and Francis Molo have not been named for the Devils but they may yet still have a role to play when coach Mark Gliddon confirms the line-up.

Josh Hannay has moved Rez Phillips onto an extended Magpies bench which also features Johnny Vuetibau; with Luke Archer (who played on the wing last weekend) moving to fullback for Ono So’Oialo.

In a cosmetic change, Kurt Baptiste will start the match, with Mitch Cronin coming on from the bench.

The Devils have not been beaten in their past five games at Bishop Park – however, they have only picked up the three wins, with the remaining two games dating back to 2013 ending in draws.

BURLEIGH BEARS v PNG HUNTERS

Pizzey Park on Friday, April 25 – 3.30pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: First game

The Burleigh Bears were humbled last weekend in their 48-20 loss to Easts Tigers and will be keen to put on a much-improved show against the crowd-pleasing Hunters tomorrow.

Their defence was unable to shut down the attacking prowess of noted point-scoring weapons Cody Walker and Donald Malone.

Against a similarly talented and unpredictable PNG Hunters line-up this weekend, coach Carl Briggs will be counting on his experienced players like Matt Keating, Matt Bell and returning skipper Darren Griffiths to step up.

His return is one of a number of changes this week, with the 20-man squad including new faces Kailem Perkins, Dane Clark and Zac Mackay.

Mark Ioane’s strong performances in this competition have earned him a call-up to the Titans team, while Siuatonga Likiliki has dropped to the extended bench.

Louis Fanene is also out with a calf injury.

For the Hunters, coach Michael Marum had originally named an unchanged team from the one that defeated the Sunshine Coast last Sunday – but he will have to replace forward Timothy Lomai who has accepted a two-match ban for a dangerous throw.

TIP: PNG Hunters by 18.

CQ CAPRAS v MACKAY CUTTERS

Browne Park on Friday, April 25 - 4pm
Referee: Tyson Brough
Head to Head: Mackay 8 Central 4

Understandably, the Capras have named an unchanged side for tomorrow’s ANZAC Day match against the Cutters.

Coach Jason Hetherington is justifiably pleased with the performance of his players in their upset 26-18 win over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls last Thursday night.

However, the Capras have hinted on social media that experienced five-eighth Brent Crisp could make a comeback from an ankle injury.

The Capras claimed their first win of the season in the game at Gladstone’s Marley Brown Oval.

The CQ side have historically enjoyed the Good Friday eve matches, having won three in a row.

Mackay too put their best foot forward last weekend in their 22-12 win over the Dolphins, giving them their second win for the year.

For the visitors, Liam Taylor returns to the backline for this match, while Josh Benjamin has also been included at centre, with Chris Ulugia and Justin Tavae not named.

Forward Jason Schirnack has been named at lock and will hope for a good outcome from the QRL Judiciary tonight as he seeks to downgrade his Reckless High Tackle charge.

The Cutters have won the past seven games played between the two sides; with Central’s last win coming at Browne Park in March, 2010.

TIP: Central Queensland Capras by 6.

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v NORTHS DEVILS

BMD Kougari Oval on Friday, April 25 - 4pm
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head to Head: Wynnum 17 Norths 17 Drawn 2

Brisbane Bronco Jordan Kahu has been named to make his long-awaited return from a knee injury when he turns out at centre for the Seagulls against Norths tomorrow.

Other changes for Wynnum Manly will see fellow Bronco David Stagg back in the side in the back-row, with Mitchell Krause and Saia Makisi the players to make way.

The Seagulls are coming off a surprise loss against the Capras and will look to bounce back against a Devils side who also went down in their round 8 match.

Norths weren’t given a chance to assert any dominance against the Magpies last round, and will be keen to start this game a lot better.

Sam Foster returns at halfback, but the side will be without forward Francis Molo who has been suspended for one match for a shoulder charge.

Zach Koitka will play FOGS Cup, while Todd Lowrie is on an extended bench for the Broncos.

Despite the head-to-head results being even - Wynnum have won the past six games straight between the sides, with the Devils last recording a win at Kougari Oval in June, 2009.

Adding to the task facing the Devils, Wynnum have not lost at home this year and will be keen to maintain that record.

TIP: Norths Devils by 12.

NORTHERN PRIDE v SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES

Barlow Park on Saturday, April 26 – 5.30pm
Referee: Robert Gallacher
Head to Head: Pride 11 Souths Logan 4

The Souths Logan Magpies will step into a potential firestorm on Saturday when they venture north to play the Pride at Barlow Park.

After surrendering an 18 point first-half lead against Ipswich last week, the Pride will be eager to strike back immediately on home soil in this intriguing round 9 match.

It looms as a tough assignment for the Magpies, but it’s one they are well equipped to handle after outplaying the ladder-leading Norths Devils last weekend.

Much to coach Josh Hannay’s delight, the Magpies never took their foot off the Devils’ throat in the 26-10 victory.

Pride coach Jason Demetriou has recalled exciting Mount Isa youngster Jordan Biondi-Ono who will get the chance to impress from fullback.

Javid Bowen shifts from fullback to the wing and there may yet be further changes with speculation that Kyle Feldt could return to the Pride line-up from the North Queensland Cowboys.

On the numbers front, this will be the Pride’s 150th Cup game – they have won 97, drawn three and lost 49.

TIP: Northern Pride by 10.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS v EASTS TIGERS

Piggabeen Sports on Sunday, April 27 - 2pm
Referee: Nick Morel
Head to Head: Tweed 13 Easts 10

The attacking brilliance of Easts up against the determination and resilience of the Seagulls.

What a contest this will be.

The Tigers were at their lethal best last weekend, springing 48 points on the Burleigh Bears in their 10 tries to four victory.

Easts five-eighth Cody Walker ran in four tries, while fullback Eddie Tautali and Donald Malone posted doubles as the Tigers put on a show for their home fans.

But Walker and his teammates are unlikely to be given the same latitude in Sunday’s clash at Tweed’s Piggabeen fortress.

The last three games between Sunday’s opponents have been decided by a converted try or less.

The Tweed have won six of the past seven games between these sides, with the Tigers’ last win at Piggabeen coming in 2006.

Somewhat surprisingly though, Tweed have lost their last four matches at Piggabeen.

Another loss could hurt a Seagulls team which is already four competition points adrift of fifth-placed Wynnum Manly.

TIP: Easts Tigers by 20.

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v IPSWICH JETS

Dolphin Oval on Sunday, April 27 - 2pm* (Live on Channel 9)
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head to Head: Redcliffe 25 Ipswich 12

With key forwards Jon Green, Jake Marketo and James Ackerman unavailable due to injury, Redcliffe will field another youthful team this weekend in their clash against the Ipswich Jets.

The Dolphins were kept quiet by the Mackay Cutters last Saturday, but will look to break the shackles in front of their home fans on Sunday.

Troy Lindsay’s Redcliffe team produced their best performance of the season in their last Dolphin Oval appearance, a 34-6 thumping of Souths Logan.

Young gun Tyson Cleal and David Hala will power the Dolphins’ front row, with Martin Cordwell dropping back to the bench.

Ipswich has named hooker Troy O’Sullivan to return from injury after missing last week’s stunning comeback win against the Northern Pride.

Ipswich was blown off the park in the first half, trailing 18-0 at one stage before coming back to clinch an impressive 24-18 victory.

Ipswich centre Brendon Marshall crossed for two tries in his 136 match, passing Brendon Lindsay as the club’s second most capped player behind Danny Coburn (258).

TIP: Ipswich Jets by 8 in a tough one.

XXXX Rivalry Round

Wed 30th April, 05:13PM

1398842351071.jpg

THE highly-anticipated XXXX Rivalry Round only happens once a year and this weekend, history will be made as for the first time ever it will become a statewide event with all senior Queensland Rugby League competitions involved.

Launched in 2012 via the Intrust Super Cup, the Rivalry Round quickly established itself as a Queensland sporting calendar highlight as bitter rivals clashed in often epic encounters.

It a few short years, it has become so popular, Queensland Rugby League major sponsors XXXX have looked to broaden their commitment to the concept.

This weekend will see enticing match-ups in local league competitions from Cairns to the Gold Coast and everywhere in between, with fierce rivals lining up to face off and claim bragging rights.

Across the state however, all eyes are set to turn to the state’s premier competition the Intrust Super Cup, as six well-established rivalries see their next chapter of history written on the field in what shapes as another brilliant weekend of footy.

NORTHERN PRIDE v MACKAY CUTTERS

Mackay face their local rivals for the first time as defending Intrust Super Cup premiers, but will have to overcome history and momentum in this passionate showdown.

The Pride have dominated this North Queensland derby in recent times, winning nine of their 13 matches.

They have also started the 2014 season on fire, racing to the top of the table while the Cutters sit down in 11[SUP]th[/SUP] spot.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v CQ CAPRAS

A XXXX Rivalry Round match-up introduced in 2013, the Falcons meet the Capras and will be working hard to avoid claiming an unwanted piece of Cup history.

A Capras’ win would condemn the Falcons to a 28[SUP]th[/SUP] consecutive defeat, tying with the Logan Scorpions record for the competition’s longest drought.

CQ won last year’s game 54-0 at home; so the Falcons will look to claim a win at home and repay their fans’ loyalty by breaking their streak.

EASTS TIGERS v NORTHS DEVILS

Two of Queensland’s most famous clubs; their 2013 clash showed that form lines go out the window in XXXX Rivalry Round.

Heading into the game in-form and striving to solidify a finals spot; Norths were ambushed by the visiting Easts in stunning style.

The 70-16 scoreline had to be seen to be believed and made history as the equal-biggest margin in the round’s history.

Easts hold the upper hand in head-to head (19 wins to 17 with two draws).

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

This is historically one of the biggest Cup rivalries, dating back to 1951 when the Seagulls were readmitted into the old Brisbane Premiership.

Some of the biggest names in Queensland Rugby League history (Beetson, Lewis, Myles, Civoniceva and Close) have worn the colours of these proud powerhouses and this match looks set to live up to the hype.

Redcliffe have traditionally held the upper hand in this rivalry and narrowly defeated the Seagulls 18-16 last year in a highly physical affair.

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v IPSWICH JETS

It’s a rematch of the thrilling 2008 Intrust Super Cup grand final and another bruising encounter is on the horizon for these storied rivals.

Souths’ 24-18 upset premiership win was a heart-breaker for Jets fans and 2013’s XXXX Rivalry Round provided Ipswich some redemption and showed this match goes beyond just the two competition points.

Ipswich’s 44-10 win rocked the Magpies, whose season never recovered as they lost their next three games to miss out on finals footy altogether.

BURLEIGH BEARS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

The Intrust Super Cup’s south-east derby has been going strong since 2003’s admission of Tweed Heads into the competition and historically it is the closest and arguably, most ferociously fought of all Intrust Super Cup derbies.

Always a physical affair; each side has won 11 matches in head-to-head history with neither side giving an inch in XXXX Rivalry Round matches.

NORTHERN PRIDE v MACKAY CUTTERS

Barlow Park on Saturday, May 3 – 5.30pm
Referee: Jarrod Cole
Head to Head: Pride 9 Mackay 4

A great day of rugby league is planned for Barlow Park this Saturday, with the northern showdown between the Pride and the Cutters to follow the Meninga and Connell Cup Under 18 and Under 16 grand finals.

Last weekend, the Pride held on to win a thrilling match 24-22 over Souths Logan, with Magpies winger Ramon Filipine ruled to have gone into touch as he reached out in an attempt to score the match-winning try.

The Cutters too were round 9 winners, claiming a hard-fought 34-28 victory over the Capras at Browne Park.

In team news, Pride coach Jason Demetriou has made three changes to his successful side with Brett Anderson and Cowboys Ethan Lowe and Joel Riethmuller coming into the side.

Semi Tadulala, Sheldon Powe-Hobbs and Jack Svendsen have dropped out, while the Cutters have one new face with another Cowboy in Anthony Mitchell starting at hooker and Dan Beasley not named.

While the Cutters have won the past two games between these sides, including the 2013 preliminary final; the Pride have the upper hand at home, with Mackay having lost all six games against the Pride at Barlow Park.

SUNSHINE COAST FALCONS v CQ CAPRAS

Stockland Stadium on Saturday, May 3 - 6pm
Referee: Liam Kennedy
Head to Head: Capras 6 Sunshine Coast 4 Drawn 1

The Sunshine Coast played arguably their best match of the season in their last showing at home – forcing the highly-ranked PNG Hunters to earn their 16-4 win in round 8.

Having had last weekend off with the bye; the Falcons will be more than ready to take on their next challenge, the CQ Capras.

In last year’s corresponding XXXX Rivalry Round match, the Capras handed their opponents a 54-0 thrashing, but you get the feeling things won’t be quite as easy for them this time around.

For starters, the Capras have not won at Stockland Stadium since 2010 – a record the Sunshine Coast will be working hard to protect.

They will also be working hard to avoid equalling the competition record for most consecutive losses, currently held by the Logan Scorpions of 2001-02 with 28.

In team news, forward Liam Pickersgill will replace the injured Mitch Zornig in the Capras line-up, while Marlon Doak is expected to play in the halves and Hayden Buckman on the wing after Broncos NYC star Duncan Paia’Aua was suspended for one week for a shoulder charge.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, prop Beau Walker is out with a season-ending ACL injury. His place on the bench will be taken by Luke Blumke.

EASTS TIGERS v NORTHS DEVILS

Langlands Park on Sunday, May 4 - 2pm* (Live on Channel 9)
Referee: Peter Gough
Head to Head: Norths 19 Easts 17 Drawn 2

In last year’s XXXX Rivalry Round match between the Tigers and the Devils, Cody Walker cemented his standing as one of the most talented players in the competition; bagging an individual points haul of 34 in Easts’ 70-16 win.

Unsurprisingly, it was the Tigers biggest ever win over the Devils, and Norths coach Mark Gliddon would quite rightly be using that humiliation to charge up his players for this weekend’s match.

As two of Brisbane’s traditional clubs, this match-up has a lot to offer fans, with both teams coming off losses and desperate to atone in the traditional derby.

Shane Neumann comes in at centre in the place of Maeli Seve in the only change to the Tigers team for this weekend while Norths have made three changes.

Michael Lucas is set to make his Intrust Super Cup debut for the Devils on the wing, while Brisbane Bronco Todd Lowrie, who will be looking for a big performance to force his way back into the NRL, has been named as a starting prop.

Sam Foster has been named at halfback, with Rogan Dean, Brad McKee and Byron Creighton the players omitted.

While the head-to-head record for the two clubs is relatively close, Norths have won six of the past eight games between the two sides.

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES v IPSWICH JETS

Davies Park on Sunday, May 4 – 2pm
Referee: Clayton Sharpe
Head to Head: Ipswich 19 Souths Logan 16 Drawn 1

Week after week, we’re seeing thrilling finishes in the NRL and Intrust Super Cup.

Last Saturday’s Cup clash between the Northern Pride and Souths Logan was yet another game decided right on the bell.

The Magpies came up just short though in search of a second try in the final two minutes and they’ll be eager to finish on the right side of the ledger in this important XXXX Rivalry Round match at Davies Park.

In contrast to the Magpies near miss, the Jets did it relatively easy last week; leading from start to finish against the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Ipswich’s smaller men, including Javarn White, Wes Conlon and Marmin Barba, were at their tormenting best.

But this weekend the Jets will meet a team that can be equally dangerous around the ruck with Kurt Baptiste and Mitch Cronin capable of tearing any side apart.

It all points to a fabulous spectacle between two clubs who continually punch above their weight in the Intrust Super Cup.

BURLEIGH BEARS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

Pizzey Park on Sunday, May 4 - 3pm
Referee: Michael Gordon
Head to Head: Burleigh 11 Tweed Heads 11

Rivalry is the buzz word this weekend and it doesn’t get much bigger than this.

Spectators will feel the intensity from the very minute the players step foot onto Pizzey Park for this one.

Interestingly, all six Intrust Super Cup tippers in our match day programme went with a Burleigh Bears victory.

Tweed will have something to say about that, particularly as they have won five of their last six games against their coastal rivals.

Burleigh is chasing a fifth-straight win at home this year.

Recruit Khan Ahwang requires six more points to bring up 100 for the season.

Burleigh v Tweed games are traditionally tight affairs, so it may not be another points scoring spree for the dashing Bears centre.

Both of these teams will field an array of Gold Coast Titans contracted players, which adds another element to an already fascinating clash.

Tweed’s 23-14 win over the Easts Tigers has breathed new life into the Seagulls’ campaign.

They can continue their climb up the ladder with another win here.

Coach Aaron Zimmerle is set to field arguably their strongest team of the year, with the return of Titans debutant Cody Nelson to play alongside the likes of Matt Srama, Sam Irwin, Beau Henry and Kalifa FaiFai Loa.

WYNNUM MANLY SEAGULLS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS

BMD Kougari Oval on Sunday, May 4 - 3pm
Referee: Chris Anderson
Head to Head: Redcliffe 25 Wynnum 12 Drawn 2

The prized Herald Cup will go on the line in Sunday’s clash between the fierce bayside rivals.

Redcliffe currently holds the Herald Cup after winning both games last year.

However, the Dolphins will start as underdogs in this match given their indifferent form in recent weeks.

Jon Buchanan’s Wynnum outfit is one of the form teams of the competition, having ruthlessly disposed of Norths last Friday 30-10.

The Seagulls will also be boosted by the return of classy hooker Jake Granville, who has played the last two games in the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos off the bench.

The Queensland Residents star had limited game time in both matches, but certainly did not look out of place.

Wynnum have won all five home games this year, much to the delight of local fans who will pack into the Chook Pen on Sunday.

After being outplayed by the Jets last weekend, Dolphins coach Troy Lindsay has made the one positional change with Paul Byrnes and Stewart Mills swapping roles.

The speedy Byrnes moves from the wing to fullback and should relish the open space.

There is one forced change, with Tom Geraghty coming in for the injured Jon Green.

TIP: Wynnum Manly Seagulls by 8.
