2013 Rugby League World Cup Thread

Even if it ends, it's been a great reign as world cup holders. Don't think I'll ever top being at the 08 final as the greatest moment of my life.
 
Why on earth did we name Simon Mannering captain! He wouldn't be anywhere near our starting 17 if he wasn't named captain. We're going to have a pretty good team this World Cup!

FIJI has their answer to England's Burgess brothers after the Sims siblings agreed to represent the nation at this year's World Cup.

Cowboy Ashton Sims, who represented the island country at the last world cup, confirmed North Queensland teammate and brother Tariq and Newcastle's Korbin would join him playing in the black and white at the UK-based tournament.

The trio of NRL brothers all qualify through their mother Jacquline, who was born in Fiji.

"They've all said yes (and) I'd be really excited about that," Ashton said of Tariq and Korbin.

"Playing for Fiji would be great and I know my mum's side of the family will definitely be over the moon.

"They were over the moon when I played for Fiji back in '08, so it's something that we'd cherish as a family and as a brotherhood."

Jarryd Hayne and Akuila Uate played for Fiji alongside Sims at the 2008 tournament and have since stamped themselves genuine NRL superstars along with becoming representative regulars in State of Origin and for Australia.

Sims said the Fiji experience played a key role in their development.

He predicted a similar impact for his highly-rated younger brothers.

I have a strange feeling in my pants...
 
I think Mannering is a great decision as captain. A lot of the kiwi forwards like to play the expansive/power running game so its good to have a good honest worker leading the pack so they can play their game. Mannering would easily be in my top 17 for the Kiwis.

Enough workers in that lot, best forwards in NZ in my opinion, no room for Mannering.
 
Mannering wasn't playing too well when they first named him captain, but I have to admit he's really stepped it up as the Warriors have hit form, and will easily make the side. It's ended up being an astute choice, for mine.

Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall revealed his football plans to represent New Zealand at the rugby league World Cup and then become a rugby union All Black.

Despite his career sliding, Marshall, it appears, still wants it all.

Marshall, who has signed with the Auckland Blues Super Rugby franchise, wants to represent Steve Kearney’s Kiwis in England later this year before then pulling on an All Blacks jumper ahead of Dan Carter and Aaron Cruden.

During a press conference at Concord Oval yesterday, Marshall also refused to apologise for wearing a Blues jumper in a You Tube announcement while still contracted with Wests Tigers.

Even though i don't go for Scotland, this makes me really excited! Finally being able to see Rugby League countries that aren't the big 3 (Australia, New Zealand and England) finally being competitive!

Manly Sea Eagles set for record World Cup representation



MANLY are poised to set a 60-year record, with no less than 11 players set to play in this year’s World Cup.

It would be the Sea Eagles’ biggest representation at a World Cup, which was first played in 1954.They had 10 players involved in the code’s Centenary World Cup in 1995.

But the Sea Eagles’ sizzling form is ready to see a record number of players picked for five different nations - Australia, Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand and Ireland.Players will have another chance to impress their various nations in Friday night’s blockbuster against South Sydney at Bluetongue Stadium.

Those in line for World Cup selection are Brett Stewart , Glenn Stewart, Daly Cherry-Evans, Jorge Taufua , Anthony Watmough , Brent Kite, Richie Fa’aoso (Tonga), Kieran Foran, Justin Horo (New Zealand), Steve Matai (Samoa) and James Hasson (Ireland).

Hasson, who will come off the bench against the Rabbitohs, has already been chosen in a preliminary 40-man Irish squad.

In 1995, Manly had Mark Carroll, David Gillespie, Terry Hill, John Hopoate, Nik Kosef, Steve Menzies, Danny Moore, Geoff Toovey, Matthew Ridge and Solomon Haumono at the victorious Word Cup.

It was the same year they defeated St George to win the premiership.

I think we're more likely to have more to be honest. Boyd & Gidley will probably get picked for Australia, Smith for New Zealand, Siuatonga Likiliki for Tonga, Fa'alogo for Samoa, Gower, Mantellato & Snowden for Italy, McManus for Scotland, Costigan for PNG, Tetevano for Cook Islands & Uate, Naiqama & Sims for Fiji. They are the likely ones excluding bolters like Toka Likiliki, the Mata'utia boys, Mason & Mullen.

According to the international laws of one nation change per World Cup period (2009-13 in this case) Uate shouldn't be allowed to play for Fiji. It'll be interesting to see if they do allow it. I think it'd be stupid to prevent him.

If he continues how he played last week after coming back from 8 odd weeks on the sideline I see no reason why he shouldn't make the team.
 
Yea but I'm not so sure it will happen again this time around. DCE has been picked on the bench for Australia before despite not getting onto the field in that game but the form he is in currently makes it nearly impossible to not have him as the sub on the bench atm.
