2013 NRL Discussion

Yeah, I think it's a pretty stupid signing given the cost.

I'll wait and see how he goes though, maybe he will be worth it!

I haven't seen enough of him, I asked a friend who's played in both comps how he'd go in the nrl. He basically said his size will be his biggest issue, apparently he is fairly small?

$1 million is ridiculous, I don't see him as being any different to somebody like Hoffman or Gordon.

It's like if the Panthers bought Dureau for $700k.... He might be alright be I doubt he will be an Inglis or Thurston with that price tag.
i still think he's up there with slater and almost inglis, definatelly think he can do better then hoffman and gordon but i do agree the amount they paid is ridiculous, he still is a superstar player imo though.

Not sure how up to date it all is, but 79Kg is tiny

Tomkins will be a good player but I don't think he will get along with the New Zealand players. I don't know maybe he will but I won't be surprised if he does a mid season signing back to England.

Who's the lightest?

Joe Bond from the Brisbane Broncos... Played a few games last year I think he's 74kg plays in the back line...

And Tomkins is the seventh lightest in the Super League.... The lightest in the Super League is only 66KG!

Nah bond never played first grade, well if he is roughly bonds size then that is tiny.

Wiser Daley ready for new Blues campaign

After his first full year coaching NSW, Origin coach Laurie Daley admits he underestimated the emotional toll the representative season would have on him.

"I didn't realise how much it'd take out of you," Daley said. "I can only marvel and sit back and applaud guys that used to do both club and Origin. I didn't realise the emotional toll taken."

The State of Origin series once again reached record levels in TV ratings and crowds this year as Queensland rolled their winning streak to an unprecedented eighth series.

But the Origin strain on players and coaches alike, as well as its impact on the premiership, continues to provide debate on whether the current three-month format should be shortened.

And while the NRL is currently looking at all avenues to address the issue, Daley said he liked the format as is.

"At the moment we're really not sure what the time frame will be in terms of how many weeks apart," he said.

"At the moment we're in a holding pattern [in our plans] and once we know the details, then we can start to lock in a few things but at this stage, whatever happens, happens.

"I don't know whether it's going to be two weeks or a week, back-to-back. It'll be interesting."

Daley was also pointed on his thoughts on halfback Mitchell Pearce, who was criticised heavily in the aftermath of this year's series loss to Queensland.

The Roosters halfback, along with halves partner James Maloney, recovered to steer their side to a premiership win.

"I thought it was a terrific thing for those guys that they were able to silence a few people and play well in big games," Daley said.

"They played well in parts of Origin and in particular in Game One they were great.

"They tried their hardest in all Origins. We just didn't execute as well as what we could've.

"But just for their confidence, knowing they've won a big game and played really well at the back end of the year is a testament to their character, because they certainly copped a lot from a lot of people.

"And no one likes to be criticised, and unfairly I thought, but they responded in the best possible way."

Daley said Pearce's strong finish to the season meant he had to be considered favourite for the job in 2014.

"He's certainly done nothing wrong. At the back end of the year he was the best halfback for NSW so if he had a good start of the season I can see no reason why he won't be there again," he said.

"But like everything, we'll see how it all unfolds. He's a good, tough kid. We're starting to create a bit of depth in that position so it'll be good to see how they start the year off."

Tomkins will be way harder to catch than Hoffman or Gordon & he looks to be a better ball player so ill be surprised if he doesn't score & set up way more tries than those two. But no way can I see him getting up there with Slater & Inglis as the best in the game.

So once Mitchell Pearce retires (and that'll be ages yet) we may actually have a chance at winning an Origin series. Until then, I shall watch Queensland aim for 8 more.

Penrith Panthers NRL club to wear pink jerseys at all away games in 2014

THE Chocolate Soldiers have turned into Pink Panthers.

In proof that rugby league's image continues to evolve, Penrith will wear hot pink jerseys for all 12 away games next season. The move is designed to support - and attract - female rugby league fansIt shows just how much rugby league has changed.

Could you imagine the response if you asked Tommy Raudonikis or John 'Dallas' Donnelly to wear a pink jersey 35 years ago?

Penrith were the first club to wear a pink jumper in the NRL's Women in League round. The Panthers continued to wear pink guernseys several times this year but will now take them on each and every road trip next season.

Penrith players who slipped on the famous 'Chocolate Soldiers' jumper in the 1960s and 1970s may cringe - but rugby league is now image conscious.

Club officials predict male fans will buy the black home jumper, women will get the away pink jersey while kids will buy a third alternate white strip.

Nearly 150,000 women have a direct connection with rugby league though being players, coaches, officials, employees, club members or volunteers.

"Look at sport today, it's all about marketing," Panthers group chief executive Warren Wilson said."Fifty per cent of our supporters are female.

"We support the Women in League round and we were the first club to wear pink for that.

"We have embraced it. The club figures that blokes would buy the black jersey and women would buy the pink jumpers.

"Kids might buy the white jersey with the big panther across the front. We have chosen to do it and everyone is behind it."

Current players have no complaints about wearing the pink outfit. No doubt the jumper will draw some criticism though and be compared to the horrid pink jumper worn by French rugby union team, Stade Français, a former club of Mark Gasnier.

Former Panthers prop Lou Zivanovic is old school, playing 116 games for the club between 1979 and 1986.

"In essence the game has stayed the same on the field but has changed in regards to marketing," said Zivanovic.

"In the old days it was about men. The game only seemed to cater for men but these days the marketing is aimed at everyone - men, women and children.''

Asked what might have happened if he wore a pink jersey in the late 1970s, Zivanovic said: "I might have got belted in the bar after the match. But times have changed and the game has moved forward, as has Penrith."

Mark 'Spud' Carroll, who played at Penrith during 1987 to 1989, said: "It's amazing how the code has changed. These days Penrith are using pink jumpers as a marketing tool and it's not a bad outfit."

The Penrith pink top looks good, I reckon! The rest of those ones in that article are all pretty bad, though.

No probs, I was curious to see what they all looked like!

The white Penrith one you posted is one of the worst, I reckon. I can see how people would like it, but there's something about it I just can't stand!
