2011 NRL Premiership: Round 1 Discussion

Raiders up 16-6 after 34 minutes. Ferguson looks pumped up today, he's been very celebratory. Gallen is having a bit of a shocker with his offloads & the Sharks for a period of time just kept making horrible mistakes & kicking out on the full off kickoffs.

Sam Williams on debut kicks a beauty of a 40/20.

Lol Josh you seemed pretty confident tipping them!! I think you have learnt a valuable lesson today

haha yep. Thought they would play better then that considering who was out though. Sharks and Penrith to play for the spoon going off the first round!!!

The Sharks wouldn't even threaten a NSW cup side with their current halves and no name backline.
Walsh and Tighe today showed all Newcastle fans this afternoon why Smith gave them the hook in the first place. That is as bad as I have seen Penrith play in a while. Jennings officially is grossly overrated in my books aswell!

Nah...i mean yeah sure what he did was unforgiveable, but easily remedied. U saw today that when he got in open space he looked dangerous (which was like once the whole game...because they couldnt hold the ball). It will take a 10min scolding by the coach to fix his issue of overrunning

This first round is no way to tell how Penrith will go for the rest of the season. They are more than capable to doing the same thing to the Knights. This time though, the Knights got them and Penrith were terrible. They were underdone, give them a few more rounds and then make that judgement.

Walsh and Tighe have also shown on countless occasions that Smith made a mistake on letting them go. Not necessarily against the Knights (remembering there are 15 other teams). Walsh lead the NRL in try assists and was great last season even prompting one MS poster to make a sig "Luke Walsh - the one that got away". He wasn't even that bad today, there were others that were much worse. I quite liked him passing the ball around a little bit more.

I do agree on your statement about Penrith though. We were absolutely terrible. Your comment on Jennings though is ridiculous, I think that Cooper Vuna is grossly overrated on here! Jennings has earned his accolades but on this occasion he just wasn't himself. He actually wasn't that bad but some reason he had some trouble keeping onside. I get the feeling he has been doing that for a long time and the refs are only just cracking down on it. I might also just point out, that game was Jennings first hit-out for the Panthers this year. Did you see how dangerous he was in the All Stars game?

The guy was forced to play with a bung leg on the end of a crappy team performance. He was hardly their worst player and not 'grossly' overated.

Agreed. In this case, Elliot would of been better naming Simmons but who knows how that would of went.

Smith had every right to let them go. Keeping Walsh and Tighe would of just been accepting mediocrity. Tighe wouldn't go anywhere near making our current backline and I would take guys from our feeder club over him. Walsh is average and really only got leading try assists from his boot. I would of probably had him over Dureau, but it was hardly a bad decision letting him go. He was nothing special here, but has obviously done some good things at Penrith. Just not enough to suggest Smith made a mistake in letting him go

Tighe is past it and Walsh offers nothing apart from a kicking game and a slight indication that he has a running game that dosen't get put to use. I like Walshy but facts are facts.

My comment on Jennings is fairly accurate.

I state that he is overrated because he rarely plays to his potential, it frustrates me because I know what he is capable of. No doubt he is a great player but just how much he gets talked up by Ch 9 and the media is laughable considering nearly every game he is playing busted and does nothing.

I'm not writing Penrith off, they are capable of the minor premiership, just seems a bit strange that they turned in a performance like that in the first round when the team was fullstrength apart from Nathan Smith who wouldn't of even made a difference anyway.

I agree that Vuna was extremely overrated on here aswell, same with Uate.

At the time, it made perfect sense for Smith to let them go. This year Tighe and Walsh wouldn't of mattered at the Knights. Last season though, they both would of been regular starters in your side. Luke Walsh @ 7 and Jarrod Mullen @ 6 comes to mind.

Tighe isn't past it. He is still at a reasonable age and probably had his best season last year. He is a good solid player, something every club needs. I like him and he is a very underrated player. As I said above, he wouldn't be needed at the Knights now but last season he would of played regularly. If you were to ask me I would say Brad Tighe > Wes Naiquama and Kieth Lulia.

Walsh last season only kicked last season and it annoyed me immensely. This season though I am not all that concerned because today's game was enough for me to say that he is still improving. He was regularly passing more and was starting to look more like a halfback (same with Burns). His inside balls are good and he is good when he runs at the lines. Once he gets a handle on this he will be a much better player. He is only 22 and still has plenty of room and time to improve.

I can sort of understand your comment on Jennings. At times he is overrated but putting that term "grossly" is just a little too much. He does have his good times. You can't expect the bloke to perform brilliantly each week when he is marked up heavily by opposition.

I have no idea what that performance was. It should of been a lot closer. I think it just comes down to a few injuries, Waterhouse, Lewis, Coote, Jennings, Gordon were all underdone. Another few weeks and I think we will have an indication as to what Penrith's chances are. Don't use Round 1 & 2 as indicators because I get the feeling Parra will beat us next week.

Tighe would of been playing NSW cup all year last year if he played with Newy, Macdougall and Sau would of been ahead. Walsh, well yeah he would of been a starter.
