India secure finals berth

INDIA have posted a comfortable seven-wicket victory over a disappointing Sri Lanka at Bellerive Oval to secure a tri-series finals berth against Australia.
Star batsman Sachin Tendulkar notched an entertaining 63 off 54 balls - his highest score in the series so far - to ensure his team easily reached the target of 180 with 17.4 overs to spare.
The competition's leading run-scorer Gautam Gambhir continued his excellent form with a cavalier knock of 63 on a flat wicket, while Yuvraj Singh (36 off 35 balls) also contributed to the rout.
India were particularly savage against spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who went for the unflattering figures of 1-54 off 8.2 overs.
World champions Australia will take on India in the best-of-three finals starting in Sydney on Sunday.
The lopsided result means Sri Lanka's match against Australia in Melbourne on Friday has become a dead rubber.
LEE Wins Allan Border Medal

A YEAR after Australian cricket was fretting over who would lead the pace attack long-term, Brett Lee won the Allan Border Medal.
The blond paceman overcame the ankle injury that ruled him out of last year's World Cup to take over from Glenn McGrath as Australia's top fast bowler.
He dominated the domestic Test series against India and Sri Lanka this summer with 40 wickets at 20.58.
Overall, Lee snared 70 one-day and Test wickets in the voting period at an average of 21.06.
Lee polled 125 votes to win the medal, 18 ahead of opening batsman Matthew Hayden.
Captain Ricky Ponting, who had won Australian cricket's top individual award for the last two years, was third on 64.
Lee predictably won the Test player award and Hayden took out the one-day honour, even though he failed to score a vote in the final 12 limited-overs games.
This time last year, Australia was about to lose McGrath and leg-spinning genius Shane Warne to retirement.
Lee has made the most of the opportunity, becoming more accurate in the style of McGrath while losing none of his frightening pace.
There was speculation before tonight that Hayden's outstanding World Cup campaign might mean he would overhaul Lee in the overall medal voting.
Lee damaged his ankle during a training drill in New Zealand before the Cup.
Hayden became only the second player to score more than 600 runs in a Cup tournament and was only 15 runs short of Sachin Tendulkar's record as Australia won the trophy for the third time in a row.
McGrath retired from international cricket at the end of the World Cup and Lee returned from his injury to dominate through this summer.
He was named player of the Test series against Sri Lanka and also India.
Lee was 11th in the one-day voting with nine, compared to Hayden's 24, but the Test votes had a much greater weighting in the overall polling.
The NSW quick won the Test award with 12 and Hayden was next on seven.
In other awards, Queensland all-rounder Ashley Noffke was named the top state player.
Western Australia's Luke Pomersbach won the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award and Lisa Sthalekar was named the women's top international cricketer for the second-straight year.

AUSTRALIA has been left in a spin-bowling crisis with the shock retirement of Brad Hogg from international cricket.
Hogg will announce his retirement at a press conference in Melbourne later this afternoon.
The 37-year-old left-arm spinner told senior Cricket Australia officials of his decision at the Allan Border Medal on Tuesday night.
Hogg played seven Test matches and 121 one-day games for Australia. He will finish after the finals of the Commonwealth Bank series, starting in Sydney on Sunday.
Australia is now left without a recognised Test spin bowler because of doubts over Stuart MacGill's comeback from hand surgery late last year.
It is unclear whether Hogg will be tempted to play in the rebel ICL tournament in India.
