No one is suggesting he doesn't have a higher ceiling than Cant at Hooker, but he's an 18-year-old with no first-grade experience.

It's magical thinking to believe that those are not going to be issues in the pressure cooker of that game in such a crucial position.

Holbrook seems to be the perfect fit, personality wise (he actually has one) and coaching wise

Yeah and EVERYONE has improved under him. Like not one player is not better this year under Holbrook. This never happened under AOB

I actually thought cant played alright at hooker, distributed the ball well considering. Then defended well at the end in the middle, if he could just get some contact metres there’d be a real good player there. Plenty of time for Hagan to play his part.
Graham had a good no frills did this job type game too.

I think the way I’d put it is: Him in the team raises the floor massively because he is the lynchpin of how we open the field & rip teams apart coming out of our own half. He’s the shot caller on those clearly, and his centres play with an insane amount of time and space because every defender is so worried about him burning them.

Today he lowered the ceiling with several moments he’d like back.

Brilliant player who makes his team better who played below his standards individually today.
 
Francis had a more typical reserve grade form game.
Only 19 tackles with 4 missed and 2 ineffective - so tackle efficiency probably about 75% or so.
Went missing for periods in the game, but came to life in the last 10 like he often does.
We need him to get back into the mindset of doing his best for as long as he can - no coasting in firstgrade.

Cody will get there I think but I thought today he got the stuffing beat out of him a bit. He didn’t shirk his duty but was running into a brick wall every time. Crouch too. More alarmingly, I thought Crokes got a bit of a working over too.

One more pre-season may change that but the only middles we had today who could carry the ball effectively were Mooney and Frizell.

The good news is that while under AOB, no middle go forward becomes an excuse not to play footy at all, it isn’t under this coach.
