Scheduling of Matches

On the domestic front, there are many issues that also reflect the insular narrow minded thinking of the ARL/NRL. The policies are, in my view short sighted and lacking real vision for the future.

Television, but only in NSW and Qld, drive the scheduling of matches.
Crowds at games and season ticket holder numbers are not increasing and are down in many circumstances.
Why?
As a former Knights season ticket holder, I enjoyed going to the footy on a Sunday afternoon. The occasional Friday night match or Saturday night was OK but Sunday was my preferred time to watch footy. I believe that analysis of crowd numbers on various days would suggest that most Knights fans shared my preference for Sundays. So what happens? The NRL and Fox negotiate Monday night football and schedule a lot of the Knights games on Monday in 2007.
I have no interest whatsoever in attending matches on a Monday night. So why would I purchase a season ticket not knowing how many games would be so-scheduled?!!

I really believe that the round should finish on Sunday. If there must be an additional television round why not schedule it on Thursday night, as the opening game of the round?

North Queensland Cowboys seem to prefer playing matches on Saturday night. Their crowds reflect that. Newcastle seem to prefer Sundays. Why can the NRL not survey the clubs and schedule matches, as far as possible, on the preferred day/night of the home team.
Why can't games be scheduled at the start of the season? If the TV stations are concerned about having high rating teams on Friday night, it would not be too difficult to predict that teams such as the Broncos will draw good ratings for the foreseeable future. At least then fans considering buying season tickets can see what they are, in fact, purchasing.

NSW-Qld RL, NRL or Australasian RL
The AFL has had long term expansion plans for many years. They make decisions and then stick by them and support them to ensure success.
When the VFL first started to air Saturday matches in NSW the ratings were low. But did they give up.? No, they relocated the Swans from South Melbourne to Sydney. At first the crowds were modest, but the AFL persisted. The Swans now have a strong supporter base in NSW and the junior development and number of kids playing AFL is increasing in NSW.
Similarly the AFL has expanded into traditional areas such as WA and SA and into less traditional areas such as Brisbane and, soon, the Gold Coast.
Meanwhile the NRL dumped the Western Reds and the Adelaide Rams and concentrated its efforts in Qld and NSW.
If Rugby League wants to expand it MUST do so sooner rather than later.
And it must stipulate that free to air contracts ensure live coverage in Melbourne and Adelaide and Perth and Darwin
This would increase the appeal to advertisers.
It could also be the vehicle to drive reform to the competition game scheduling to ensure a fairer competition than the present NRL scheduling provides.

My suggested proposal is to plan for a 2010 expansion of the competition to 20 teams. Forget the howls of there not being enough quality players around. of course there are ~ they just need to be given the opportunity. When players such as Brad Fittler, Gordon Tallis and Andrew Johns retire, others are given the opportunity and new stars emerge. The expansion will just allow more players the opportunity.

Retain the current 16 teams.
Add a second team from NZ, located in Wellington. That would lift the game's profile in NZ and allow one match to be played in NZ each weekend. Far from being a threat to the warrior's survival, a second team would strengthen the standard of player in NZ. NZ Players may return from Superleague or may elect to play for one of their 2 home teams instead of heading abroad. But as always, some Australian imports would be required to balance the teams.
Add (or reinstate) a team from each of the cities of Perth and Adelaide. Then support them so they can grow and be successful and develop supporter bases and junior player competitions.
Finally add a team based in Gosford to make use of that stadium facility and to be supported by or owned by John Singleton and his promotional expertise.

Having set up 20 teams, re-schedule the competition.
19 rounds. Each team plays each other team once. 9 home games/10 away games one year; 10 home games / 9 away games the next year. That is fair.
Suspend the competition for 4 weeks and play the rep games on a Friday night. The fans won't dessert the game! They will appreciate that their club team is being treated fairly and not being disadvantaged by SOO selections.
So play 5 rounds
Then have a free weekend. Play SOO1 on Friday night. Possibly play NSW City vs. NSW Country Origin 1 on the Saturday night or Sunday (at a country venue). Players selected from NRL players not in the origin teams.
Then play a further 3 rounds.
Then have another free weekend and play SOO2 on Friday night. Possibly play a Qld City vs. Qld Country Origin 1 on the Saturday night or Sunday (at a country venue). Players selected from NRL players not in the origin teams.
Then play a further 3 rounds.
Then have another free weekend and play SOO3 on Friday night.
Then play a further 3 rounds.
Then play the Trans Tasman Test on a free weekend.
Then play a further 5 rounds.
Then play the final series ~ consisting of an 8 team series.

That schedule has a few less rounds. It would be easier on the players.
It would be fairer to all teams.
It would embrace an Australasian (Australia & New Zealand) presence.
There would be no byes, but there would be free weekends when non-rep players would get a spell.

With 10 games available each weekend for TV, there could be:
  • A Thursday night game ~ Fox
  • 2 Friday night games ~ 9
  • A Saturday afternoon game at 3.00 pm ~ Fox
  • A Saturday late afternoon game at 5.30 pm
  • 2 Saturday evening games ~ Fox
  • A game telecast from NZ each Sunday (2 NZ Teams) played at 2pm NZ time and shown live at 12.00 noon is Eastern Australia ~ Fox
  • 2 Sunday afternoon games one beginning live at 2pm (Fox) and one beginning live at 4pm (9)

Welcome.

Some good points. I doubt the NRL will make any scheduling changes any time soon, mainly due to contract obligations with NINE and Fox.

Honestly, this schedule would solve so many problems it's not funny. It is time for the NRL to stand up to the television broadcasters and make some of these changes, for the good of the game.

Clubs may complain about loss of revenue through fewer games per season, but particularly with the Sydney teams, I think you would get so many more going to each match, if there were only nine or ten home matches per season.

The rep season is improved, having the test match after origin would improve the standing of the international game. There's also less matches per season for the top players, because there would be no backing up ... so I think this would lead to more being available for the end of season internationals, because they would be less drained.

I also reckon Thursday night would be so much better than Monday night. Who wants to stay up late watching league on a Monday after the first day of work? Thursday when there is only one day left in the week would be much more appealing.

Why we don't play each team twice is still beyond me. Only have to look at Melbourne, Newcastle & Brisbane who field key players out due to origin yet have to back up and play.

I'm not au fait with the TV set up in Aus/NZ other than Fox/Sky is subscription only. Is there a FTA channel with the right quals (10?) ? It is a bit of a joke that games are played during Origin periods. Why am I going to pay to go to a match when half the first team is out on Origin duty?

To play each team twice in a 16 team competition would mean 30 rounds plus finals plus rep games + pre-season games.
Even if pre -season games were eliminated, that would still be too many matches for the payers to get through and the season would go on too long.

At present the 9 network has the rights to the 2 Friday night games ~ one is shown live at 7.30 pm and the other replayed at around 9.30pm.
9 also has the rights to the 3pm Sunday game which is delayed and telecast at 4pm, leading into the news.

Fox has the rights to replay all these 3 matches plus live rights to 3 (usually) Saturday games (5.30, 7.30 (choice) and 9.30pm(replay)) and live rights to a 2pm Sunday match and a Monday night (7.30pm) (yuck0 ) match

Do you really want 30 rounds AK?!?! That would be madness!!!

Its perfect the way it is actually. Current system works with me, no need for a change.

30 rounds would just be too long and finals etc on top of that.

The schedule atm just needs a couple afternoon games, I would just like Monday night games moved to Sunday 3pm & 1 Saturday night to Sunday 3pm & the 2pm game moved to 1pm. That means the Warriors would get more Tv games since they would most likely play 1pm games in Sydney, which would be 3pm games over in Auckland.

So Friday 7:30pm x2 (2 games as it is)
Saturday 5:30pm
Saturday 7:30pm (Live game on nine)
Sunday 1pm (Live game on Nine)
Sunday 3pm x3 (Live game on Nine)

then from 5pm to 6pm have a talk back show about the round & issues in the game, & have a story each week of a fan.

Solution would be to merge clubs then

Or have a draw where the club picks a draft of teams to play therefore they cant blame anyone but themselves

I am pleased that you are happy with the current situation but how can it be perfect when:

Some teams (e.g. Storm in 2008) are unfairly affected by State of Origin scheduling ~ this year the Storm had 10 players missing for one NRL round and 9 missing for another.

All teams play some teams twice and some teams once.

Additionally if a top team draws 2 lower teams twice each but another top team just plays each of those teams once, that is hardly fair.

Either all teams need to play each other once or twice for it to be fair. Playing twice makes the season too long and arduous. So playing each other once in a 20 team comp would be ideal.
Or trim to a 12 team comp and play each other twice for 22 rounds. (Who will we trim> The Knights? Souths? Cronulla?)

I was referring to the fact, the no. of rounds are good the way they are. I agree with Storm etc being disadvantaged. Only solution to that would be to have the Origin on its own, which again would extend the season, unless you cut down rounds.

It seems like teams are unfairly penalised more than once for being successful.

First, the salary cap ensures that any one club can't hoard talent by making them choose their most valued players, and must continually develop talent from juniors or recruit raw players that can be moulded to play first team RL.

But, secondly, Origin makes sure that successful side are missing half to three quarters of their first team for three rounds or longer, depending on injuries/suspensions. Look at Brisbane in the 90s, they were practically the whole Qld Origin side (yes, I know Robbie O was in the same side).

The NRL have got to take Origin matches out of the current schedule and have the week free. If for no other reason than to give sides a chance of getting decent home crowds for the whole season.
