2027 pre-season thread

Wonder if Hunt will be on his way out if this is the case?

Who is next up Fullback wise if Hunt leaves, now Votano is off to Dogs.
Hunt's manager asking for a decent pay day because he knows he'll get it at other clubs as a starting player. I don't think we can afford him in the end IF we resign Best that is. Hunt goes to market this year hasn't really been mentioned but he'll be well sort after and offered $$ we can't I say good luck to him, love the kid but there is no doubting Winter is one helluva talent.

Cup FB I imagine will be Jaylon Bishop. He came up from SG this year and played Flegg Fb very nicely, then finished season in Cup as 14 as he covers 1,3,6, 9 with ease. Basically K. Gidley re-born.

I wouldn’t be opposed to letting Hunt chase a first grade spot and more coin. It’d be better than getting half a season’s worth of games in and thrown in to multiple different positions.

Would be really sad to lose Hunt.
Hope we don't.
He's got loads of natural talent.
Still very young and developing.

Has there even been any talk of him leaving?
Biggest hint was from POS. At the time he was hoping to sign Young and Best. Basically said you can't keep em all and speaking of Hunt specially he speculated that he would get offers from elsewhere that we couldn't match. Best hasn't signed yet and there will be a new recruitment team, so things may change in that space.

There is an article on zero tackle on 5 players the Broncos should target, Hunt is one. Also Croker is another

I hope we can find a way to keep both, but our depth may force our hand

You know what. I would love croker to get a big ol pay day.

I dont want to see him go but we have had enough discussion about people that we could shift into lock, he may get surpassed. But his effort and link is great.

Sorry in advanced if have been mentioned already. What’s Hunts contract situation?
Until 27'. So goes on market Nov 1.

That's why we're fixing Winter at right centre, because he's the cheaper of the two players. Letting Hunt go hurts but it is only a growing pain when your system has provided a ready-made replacement.

The club will for sure keep Hunt around for 2027 even once he signs elsewhere. We need him for depth more than we've benefited from his performances.

He is an origin potential player imo, no doubt. But Winter looked pretty unreal for a teenage debutante. We won't lose much if anything with Winter and the upside is unknown at this stage.

We should be able to keep players like Hunt.
All the top sides seem to be able to keep these guys.
Hunt is a real country boy. I can't see him fitting into city life.

Hunt is 8 months older than Winter, but has already played 30 NRL games and scored 18 tries across 2 season. A lot of players would call that a decent career. He has had a couple of shockers, but he has also been one of our best in several games.
I'd say his career would stack up very well against any 20 year old we've had over the years.

Bradman Best - 31 games and 12 tries before turning 21
Fletcher Hunt - 30 games and 18 tries before turning 21

So Hunt goes to market November 1.

I can see a few clubs interested in him. If I were him, I’d probably see how pre-season pans out. If he can earn that centre spot - there’s a lot of success to be had here.

He’s been a valuable player - covers a number of positions, full of heart, some refinement over the years could see us with a very good footballer. His first season he was a bit underdone - worked on things and came back a lot better/stronger. I’d like us to keep him and get a better idea of his development arc.

In saying that, we’ve had a sample size of 30 games. If the coaching staff see Winter as a better prospect, then so be it, and we hope we end up with an even better player. If hunt is overlooked for the centre gig, I think he explore his options. He probably feels he should get first crack

Think this is where Holbrook’s people skills and man managing skills may be required - you’d argue both Hunt and Winter feel a good shot at making a single digit jersey their own. Imagine the 19 will be disappointed.

I’m happy for them to battle it out over preseason and for the coaching staff to make a call. If Hunt signs elsewhere after November, I think he goes to permanent 19 and Winter gets the reps.

I can see a world where we offer a contract for another 2 years, and see where we end up. I think they’d back themselves to “offload” him to another club if he turns out to be surplus to requirements or is unhappy.

Don't think he wants to leave but agent pushing for starting position $$.

Add Nonu and Gow coming through as good winger options too in a years time and he just has that risk of not locking down a spot and being too costly.

I absolutely would LOVE him on a wing, but we locked up Marz and Dom for multiple years

Think Hunt deserves first chance at centre and with his versatility he also covers f/b and wing if injury occurs so Winter will get some opportunities during the season.
Would be nice to see Hunt play one position over a longish period of time to show he has what is needed.
Can see him testing the market but not making a decision until mid season 27.

Id imagine Schiller going will free up money for Hunt.
Schiller is signed for 27 only, so doesn't help with signing Hunt for 2028 and beyond.
Apparently he is on $300k+.
Still frees up good money and a spot for 27 if we aren't paying a big chunk for him to play elsewhere.
Winter probably gets upgraded to a top 30 spot.

All this talk about not having cap space for 2028 seems wild.
How many players do we even have signed for 28?
And isn't that the year the cap goes up significantly?

Hunts decision might be more around a starting 13 spot.

Good clubs don't spend $600-700k on backup outside backs. Hunt may turn out to be an Australian rep but if we've got an 18 yo Winter who will do similar things for less than half the cost it allows us to hold onto other key players like Manuleleua in Nov of 28'

As of now, Hunt starts ahead of Winter, obviously. And the only reason he won't us because the club has already conceded to losing him and wants to develop Winter

I suspect if ponga went down they would move sharpe to fullback and go smith/brown in the halves. Not too sure if we had a second injury could see them potentially introducing another half rather than fullback.
